Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

BC is an odd choice when the other 2 are such highly regarded in academics. I guess that makes BC the safety school? :D

When you've got athletic talent and your dad is a millionaire, the academic bar suddenly gets lowered a bit. He even admits in the article that he's merely a decent student, and probably wouldn't get into Hahvahd on his academic record alone. ;)

If the NHL is what he really wants, I'm guessing he ends up at BC. Of course, you know what they say - it doesn't matter where you play, as long as you've got the talent the scouts will follow you. If Harvard or Yale promises him a lot of ice time early on, maybe he'd rather play top minutes.

One comment I would like to make about the whole coaching change and the early success here. Just remember that last year's team played much of the season without Olson, all the season without Baker and players like Blake Pietila, David Johnstone, Tanner Kero and Riley Sweeney were not on this team at all and with the exception of Sweeney, those guys were recruited by Russell (as well as Lebrecque). This is not the same team Jamie won 4 games with. Mel has been great and I continue to look forward to the success he is having with this team but let's not forget just how unlucky Tech was the last few years.

I don't understand why Dirk and Randy don't pick a pronunciation and stick with it for both. What is going to happen when the third one starts playing?

pa - till - uh for Blake?
pee - et - uh - luh for Aaron?
pee - da - luh for Chad?

Now it sounds like there is a 4th in the wings or am I understanding the post wrong?

Chad went by pa-till-uh on his CCHA intro, but said Pee-ta-luh was fine. Another name that has seen some different pronunciations is Kaunisto. Steven at LSSU went be Ka-NEE-stow, Kory and Ray at NMU by ka-NISS-toe and their relatives in Calumet are known as COW-nis-toe! Truly the players to be named later!

this is true. Many were predicting a significant improvement this year with or without a coaching change. That said, there was never going to be a better time to change coaches to this style of play, when guys like BP, DJ, and TK (who has continued to impress me the most with his potential) were just coming on board.
Whoever created the fire-breathing Russell needs to make the Pearson "OFFENSE" one.

Fire breathing Russell is still one of the greatest things posted on these boards.

I don't think JR's style of play would have netted the same results. I think that many posters have complimented the former coaching staff on their recruiting abilities; just didn't know what to do with the players once they got here. No disrespect to JR but keep in mind it is the assistant coaches that did (and still do) a lot of the recruiting leg work. (Props to PM, CT, DW and now BM)

Bottom line the coach needs to figure out how to get the most out of the talent that you have; Coach Pearson has done exactly that!

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

and there's the whole positive/negative aura around the team that is affected by and also affects results. One player last year said "it's really hard going to practice every day". One 30-year season ticket holder told me last week that he and a lot of others were not going to renew without a coaching change.

I think we all agree that the change was needed, and that it was a good thing. Hell, I think even Jamie agrees with that, to some extent. But we should remember that not all of the reasons for the struggles the past years were in Coach Russell's control, and that he truly did whatever he was able to in order to win, it just didn't come together. There is obviously talent there, maybe the injuries made it difficult to see, and maybe Coach Pearson's systems highlight that talent better than Russell's may have. Who knows. I don't think many, if any, are criticizing Jamie Russell at this point, and I'd hope that we don't see that, because Jamie did many positive things for Tech hockey and really put the program in the position it is today with what appears to be a brighter future.

You're absolutely right. Although it's a little unsettling to read a post from bb_dl that's so overwhelmingly positive and void of anger.

Yes. there's no reason at all to dump on Jamie, or say we couldn't have succeeded with him in charge. Pointless conjecture. Looking forward to the possibility of double digit wins!

I predict double digit wins by the end of the weekend! I know it's not mathematically probable, but MEL IS THE COACH!!!

10 wins this season being considered a "success".
