Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

From the Denver thread...
Well, the tournament if the season ended today would be...

#1 Merrimack vs. #14 Connecticut
#8 Boston College vs. #11 Michigan

#2 Dartmouth vs. #13 Michigan Tech
#7 Western Michigan vs. #10 Quinnipiac

#3 Minnesota vs. #16 Northern Michigan
#6 Notre Dame vs. #9 Brown

#4 Colorado College vs. #15 Ferris State
#5 LSSU vs. #12 Ohio State

six MI teams in the tourney; 4 WCCHA teams; 3 yooper teams.

And 2 NaCHO teams. Good thing they went out and grabbed WMU!

There are a few teams that will be in there but that suffer from distorted SOS and common opponent situations this early.

Dont forget the fact that they have the "Tech Flu" :D

well really, that's why I say "bad". They haven't had a full roster. If they get some health back this week, a split will be more likely.

According to the MSU-M blogger, it sounds like a couple of their injured guys are close to returning.

interesting comments in this forum on uncommitted players in minnesota.

also I really liked coach Shields' interview. Nothing like watching someone who really knows the subject matter. I also like that our coaches know that the show is the players and not them, a lot of other coaches think they are the show. I have been getting disbelieving letters from my old alumni buddies. I tell them this is just the beginning.

That looks like it's from 2009...

Recognition for the team, Gordic for offensive player of the week and Robinson for co-defnsive player of the week.

Red Baron® WCHA
Offensive Player of the Week
Milos Gordic - Sophomore, Forward
Michigan Technological University

Michigan Technological University winger Milos Gordic, who returned to the lineup from injury to score four goals – including a hat trick – in a conference victory and tie against nationally-ranked University of Denver last weekend, has been named Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for November 1.

A 6-5, 210-pound sophomore from Burnaby, B.C., Gordic was the offensive catalyst against the visiting Pioneers for the upstart Huskies, who are off to an impressive 5-2-1 start to the season under first-year head coach Mel Pearson. After missing the first six games recovering from offseason surgery, Gordic tallied a three-goal hat trick in his first action of the season last Friday (Oct. 28) in a 7-2 triumph over Denver. He scored two power-play goals and an empty-netter in the game for the first hat trick by a Tech player since Brett Olson's vs. Northern Michigan on Oct. 9, 2009. Gordic then came back to score the game-opening goal in a 2-2 (ot) tie vs. DU last Saturday (Oct. 29). In addition to his four goals, Gordic also fired eight shots on goal in the series as MTU remained unbeaten at home at 5-0-1.

Also nominated: Scott Winkler, F, CC; Kyle Rau, F, UM; Jack Connolly, F, UMD; Terry Broadhurst, F, UNO; Mark Zengerle, F, UW.

Red Baron® WCHA
Co-Defensive Players of the Week
Josh Robinson, Sr., G, Michigan Tech
Kent Patterson, Sr., G, Minnesota

A pair of veteran goaltenders who led their respective teams to success in league play last weekend – Josh Robinson of Michigan Technological University and Kent Patterson of the University of Minnesota – have been named Red Baron® WCHA co-Defensive Players of the Week for November 1. This marks the second time this season each player has been so honored.

Robinson, a 6-0, 185-pound senior from Frankenmuth, Mich., had another strong weekend in net in helping Michigan Tech take three points from No. 2-ranked Denver. He stopped 61 of 65 shots on goal for a .938 series save percentage and surrendered just two even-strength goals. He had 38 saves on 40 shots last Friday (Oct. 28) in a 7-2 MTU victory followed by 23 saves on 25 shots last Saturday (Oct. 29) in a 2-2 overtime tie. On the season, Robinson is now 4-1-1 with a 2.28 goals-against average and a .922 saves percentage.

Congratulations to Tech on the great start. It was nice to see the way the Huskies bounced back against Denver after losing in Bemidji. Mel is a very good coach and a class act and it's nice to have a guy like Shields to help with the goaltending and keep the position stable.
