It just goes to show you how much difference a new coach with a new voice and direction can do for a hockey team.
I heard very good reviews of Mel's overall performance last night from some parents of some players. He's as hockeysmart as advertised. Shields as well, wish he could stay on full time.

I'm sure part of it is that Denver is a "Premium Pricing" game. General admission is $17 for this weekend. When Mankato comes to town that same ticket is $12. If folks are balking about parking, I'm guessing they might pass on "premium teams" as well. Oh well, it was their loss not to be there.Ryan J

They really need to do more outreach. Hockey education as well for the students. This will take time and I'm really not sure how the community is looking at Tech besides a few parking issues

Brandon has a wonderful touch with headlines; "Tech in a League of Its Own"... a few more sports fronts like that and I'm sure attendance will trend up. I'm not sure how closely the average yooper has followed events thus far, but it is building.

Attendance should be higher tonight. I just heard on WKMJ it is Family Night and tickets are reduced for up to 10 per group. Hope the Mac is rockin' tonight. Wish I could be there.

What a series!! Tech fans can't expect much more. Congrats to the players, and to the coaches. Kudos again to Suzanne for staying after Mel. Each one of us who cares about Tech hockey needs to help figure out how to fill the stands; this team and these coaches deserve nothing less.

Winning will obviously help but it's going to take some community outreach to bring out more of the locals. Calumet/Laurium are hockey crazy but there's a disconnect that has developed over the years with Tech. Calumet has a huge youth program considering the population. Tech needs to bring some players to Calumet and mix with the youth, hold some clinics, etc. Get the kids and the parents will follow.....

You start with the students. When I was a student the whole half of the stands on the student side were full.

How's that for sounding oldish?

Honestly, series with the Colorado schools have never been that well-attended during my time as a fan, unless it's Carny. My junior year, CC was the #1 team in the country and there were maybe 2200 people both nights, which is a shame because we got to witness a 3-point weekend and the pulling of Richard Bachmann after a 5-goal outing. No matter how much talent is on their roster, CC and DU just don't have much weight with casual fans that MN, WI, North Dakota, or even Duluth do. I'm sure they will say the same about us.

If du/cc games aren't well attended why make them higher priced?

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

I'm not sure what a "premium" game is. I bought extra tickets for AIC and they were $17 a pop. AIC as a premium game?

AIC shouldnt have been a premium game.. As a stusent I dont pay for my tickets to games however i feel with the $13 a game tickets and a little outreach we could have the community side of the rink full. but even tonight the student side was about 70% the community side 50% and the suiites 100%. Box attendance was 2183 which doesnt include the pep band.

A recruit I mentioned previously was in town; the hope is for a commit in the next week.

$17 this weekend was just for general admission (normally $12). I'm assuming you got reserved seats for $17 against AIC. Family night I believe is every Saturday night this season. Heck for $25 this weekend you could sit in the suites as part of a special offer, but I'm not a huge fan of watching the whole game from the end of the rink and through the netting.

I could see a family of four not being fond of paying an extra $25 or so to attend so they will likely wait until the next home series. I would expect good attendance the next time a non-name team comes to town - especially after the results against WI and DU.

It all boils down to having a winning program as far as attendance goes. If you look historical records on Tech's website CC and DU were well attended during the mid to late 70's when Tech was a powerhouse (Over 4,000 showed for games). The administration has really dropped the ball over the last how many years to get the right coach in place, until now. Credit must be given to Suzanne Sanregret for persuading Mel to come back and coach here. I think the casual fan does like to see talented teams come to play at the Mac no matter where they are from.We like good competitive hockey. We just need to compete on their level. I believe we may have finally turned the corner. It is a shame these teams now have formed a new league of their own. I don't like it, (old school) but I guess this is the new landscape of college hockey. If our program continues on an upward climb, some of the elite teams will definitely schedule us nonconference. Hopefully the administration will stipulate one year here next year there and it would be agreed upon.

This whole "winning" stuff is kind of fun, ain't it?
