Tech hockey not worth it

To the editor:

In regards to the "new era of MTU hockey," I was disappointed with the game that took place on Saturday.

It was fast paced. It was exciting. But it wasn't like a traditional Tech game that I have been accustomed to watching throughout the years.

To begin, to even get into a parking lot, I was charged $5. "Okay," I thought, "As long as ticket prices aren't any higher." Expecting to get the typical $6 or $8 ticket, I was stamped with the outrageous price of $12. My total for a simple exhibition game was now at $17, and I haven't even stepped inside the mezzanine of the (MacInnes) Ice Arena.

As a child, the only reason I was allowed to go Friday and Saturday night Tech games was because of the price. It was relatively cheap for me to go, as long as I did not snack, and the adult prices were not bad either, allowing for at least my dad to attend the games with me, if not the whole family.

Saturday, after paying $17 to walk from the parking lot to the door of "the Mac," I was able to find a seat higher up and get prepared for the game. Things were beginning to seem normal until MTU scored their first goal. Expecting to hear only the "World Famous" Michigan Tech Pep Band, I was caught by surprise when a "Goal Song" was played to try to mask the Pep Band. It turned into a lot of white noise and frustrated me to the point of not even cheering it was so annoying.

To wrap up, I feel bad for the families who have kids that are enthused with MTU hockey. Yes, they are great games to watch, but the price to pay and the drowning out of Tech's unique qualities just doesn't make it worth it to me anymore.

Wow, I know the economy has taken a hit, but give me a flippin break. You paid under 20 bucks to watch a game for a D1 program, welcome to the 21st century grandpa. 12 bucks for a ticket and you are complaining, what a whiner. Oh no, the charge you 3 dollars for a pepsi too?? Oh the humanity!

Tech is the ONLY WCHA team not to get any votes for the USCHO poll this week. I'm not saying they should have or that it even matters at this point in our building process, but a strong showing against Wisconsin and maybe we squeak in there and take advantage of what appears to be a WCHA bias (Wisconsin at 18?). Of course, I don't know that I think much of the polls anyways. Miami still has a first place vote. I guess it's hard to know what to vote on this early.

Based on recent history, if Tech manages to eke out one tie game this weekend it should be considered a successful improvement vs. Wisconsin. Starting last season with wins against weak NMU and Lake State teams disguised just how bad that edition of the Huskies would turn out to be once a few key players got injured. We lost 4 games to WI by about 3 goals each. Aim high: for a one-point series! :o

It was interesting to hear during the Wisco/NMU telecast on Wisconsin Public Television just what the real reason behind the Motel6 Conference was: The announcers said that after the Big10 schools formed their conference, the new Motel6/Super8 conference schools decided that they didn't want to travel to such "extreme locations" as Anchorage. And Houghton.

Not impressed by the badgers... They were lucky not to get swept. The only played well on the third on Saturday.

I'd like an explanation on how Grand Forks isn't an extreme location.

I thought the same thing. It was just odd to hear the explanation so frankly from the Wisco announcers. Especially after all the smoke blown up everyone's * about how the moves were "for the good of hockey."

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Mel Pearson show summary:
Overall: learned a lot about our team this weekend, bottom line is we won two games
We want to be competitve each night even if we don't win every night
Learned a lot about individual players, good weekend overall
Crowds were outstanding, will be important for us
We had good energy Sat 1st period, couldn't maintain that, a lot of penalties might have taken us out of flow of the game

Friday night:
Told team to stay possitive after 0-3 start
Be patient, be positive and sooner or later we'll get a break
We were too soft in our Dzone coverage, didn't play the man and react to turnover
Late 2nd period goal was cruicial to comeback, went hard to the net
Seigo is a smart hockey players, anticipates and reacts well
Media time out game at a good time, some rest before PP that led to 3rd Tech goal
D. Johsntone did a great job creating traffic in front of the net on that goal
For last goal, good forecheck by Baker, huge goal to take the lead
Dug a big hole the guys got rewarded for hard work

Saturday night:
Olson's 1st goal, Dman took away the passing lane, great shot by Brett
2nd goal - Likteig took the puck end to end, great speed, good shot and J. Johnstone got a goal off the rebound
J. Johnstone's 2nd goal, good patience, McCadden great job reading the breakout

Fri to Sat differences:
Had to battle on Friday, played with desperation
Saturday we got away from out game, a little too individualistic not as a team - concerning
Need to stick with the game plan and we'll have success
Likteig, Davis, Cecere, Gubb, Reddick all played 1 night on the weekend
Got a good idea of strengths, what a kid can do, like the depth, like what each player adds to the team
Coaches will have tough decisions, but have an idea of who will play Friday

Goaltending:
Wins are huge, also want them to make some key saves in key situations, Robinson did that

Puck possession and systems:
Try to teach them to play with the puck, bring the puck up the ice instead of dump and chase
Will be on offense more, have the puck more, be on defense less
Got away from that a little on Saturday - we'll talk about that in todays meetings

Wisconsin:
They lose talent to NHL but don't underestimate WI even though they're young
will be key to be discplined this weekend not giving WI PP

Friday night the frehsmen line looked good, Saturday night struggled, didn't play the greated together, not sure if that will continue

Need to work on PK for this weekend
Play as a team, need better decision at offensive blueline
turned it over too many times in neutral zone

Blueline Luncheon this Friday as well

Got our next recruit, Alex Petan of the Coquitlam Express.

Fine with me we probably do not deserve to be voted on the polls anyway based on the less than dominant showing. I will be surprised if we get a tie .I like what we see so far but we have a really long way to go. I think the playing for yourself comment from Mel is especially telling.

Pretty much what we thought. I blame swami for this one. Remember when the WCHA had invited miami and ND and was waiting for the answer. that would have been a better league than what they have now. Really the problem for the leftovers is the cutting of revenue from the playoffs.

Got our next recruit, Alex Petan of the Coquitlam Express.

Fantastic get. absolutely fantastic. is this a verbal flashy or what?

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

At the meet the coaches thing, Mel asked the assistants, what two questions do we ask about recruits? The well-practiced answer: "Can he skate, and does he compete?" Mel told a story about recruiting Muckalt: he was watching Bill's team get blown out of a game, and Bill came out for every shift working his butt off anyway... the toughest competitor on his team. He was offered a scholarship. That's the model.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

well said. We have trouble with that compete thing it seems to me. It was that way last year too. Get a lead and figure we can relax.

I haven't seen him, and he is pretty small.. still 12 points in 7 games is pretty good and yes I know, it's an offensive league.

I am wondering who will be starting this week, Could be a few surprises.

Just remember, he is an older kid too in his 3rd year in the BCHL, he should be putting up good numbers at this point if he's worth a scholarship. Jujhar Khaira is 2 years younger and putting up similar numbers (less goals so far but still 9 points in 6 games).

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out this weekend:
Lickteig, Bryce Reddick, Tyler Gubb and Jimmy Davis all started Saturday in place of Aaron Pietila, Alex MacLeod, Daniel Holmberg and Nick Cecere, who had their opportunity Friday.
I expect that all these guys will continue to get some chances to play, perhaps depending on opposing teams' strengths, and extent of bumps & bruises.

Bumps and bruises a factor of course. I think it could be more an issue of sitting someone so they fight for their playing time. Nothing like playing one game then scratched the next or being moved to a different line and sit the bench more then skate.

Keep them hungry so they understand they have to compete each shift.
