Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

People, it is time to move on. What's done is done, and we'll never be playing the CO schools or UND again in less than two years (outside of any sort of potential NCAA tourney situation), so I see no reason to continue letting the pot boil over. The only serious bummer in all of this is the loss of the Final Five, and I suspect that the check from that is less important to Tech than we've assumed over the years.

I, for one, have no desire to wade through a bunch of catfights in our series threads vs. the future NCHC and B1G teams this year. We're better than that (I hope).

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

I could see holiday tourneys, that sort of thing. But honestly, that would be more of the "we think you're an easy win, have to fill the schedule, and it's OOC" sort of thing. Travelling to MTU? Hah. Not happening.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

According to Coach Pearson, we are trying to sustain some sort of rotating/semi-regular series with tUMD and Wisconsin, as well as renew pre-CCHA era series with the real U of M and MSU.

In addition to the GLI correct? As far as anyone knows is the GLI still alive?

A good Q&A I thought with Mel Pearson on Collegehockeynews.com

Also, I wonder if there's anything to Stephen Anderson's tweets today:
steander Tommy Brown, who had been paired with Carl Nielsen on top D pair, is in street clothes at #mtuhky practice. Working on finding info.

steander Pearson disappeared into a closed-door coaches' meeting as fast as Brown disappeared from the stands. #mtuhky ?s remain unanswered...

steander #mtuhky D pairs were all over the place today with Brown not practicing. Brown didn't show any visible sign of injury... still unknown.

North Dakota's the only one I could see getting a cupcake series at the Ralph out of. Even then, it's doubtful. In case you haven't noticed, we have our own holiday tourney ;), and from what we were hearing a couple months ago, it's doubtful an NCHC team will be getting invited anytime soon once SCSU's prior engagement is complete in 2012. It was a rumor, but since Tech more or less heads the invite committee, I'd believe it. I'd rather they focus on inviting eastern teams anyway, mixed with the occasional "Reformed WCHA" team (since MI and MSU will now be in the B1G).

I figure that Tech won't be traveling to Colorado after 2013 unless Denver or CC foots the bill for just about everything. Since DU already complains about attendance for games vs. Tech, I doubt that invite is coming unless it's for the Denver Cup tourney or something similar.

You know what I mean, though. It won't be for any sort of "meaningful" game. MAYBE that first weekend of hockey, when it's split between exhibitions/cupcakes.

I take exception to this thought. Tech is not going to be a cupcake to anyone any longer, so the teams looking for a cupcake will have to invite someone else. Translation, Tech won't get an invite in any event.
I'm sure in three years, when they are the league cupcake CC would be interested.

Hey, I'm on your side. Just statin' the facts. :)

IMO, I believe Tech and UMD will continue to play each other. UMD should play regional teams when they can. I have yet to ask our AD how we plan to use our scheduling with the NCHC will be.

Schedule the Big Mistake teams, forget that the backstabbers league exists. There are plenty of teams to schedule without having to dip into those teams.

Good thing AD's don't have the two year old butthurt child's mentality that you have. Your butthurt is comical now.

Sorry you feel that way. It is an easy stance to take from where you're sitting.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

I was in Madison last weekend and watched the Badgers and Cats. It was a really exciting series. The games were more lopsided in NMU's favor than the scores or shots on goal suggest. NMU controlled the puck more and had higher quality chances. Their problem was that they couldn't stay out of the penalty box and they lost momentum by the third period in both games.

I also watched the AIC games and from what I saw, it looks like Tech has a decent chance of beating UW this weekend. The Badgers have a young team without a lot of firepower. If Tech can stay out of the box and can block Justin Schultz' blasts from the blue line, they could split or even sweep. That said, the Badger's new goalies looked very good and they showed a real ability to come back from behind. It should be a great series. I wish I was going to be in town for it.....

I hear you, but at this point I'm not willing to give them a free pass either. The Bi6Ten I think pretty much everyone saw it coming once PSU came on board. But those teams already play each other in every other sport so yeah, why not have the same rivals in hockey as well. The WCHA would have been fine with 10 teams. But then the fools out West go on an ego trip and figure they are too good for the WCHA, grab all the "best" teams from the WHCA to make a new league.

Then when they start getting turned down by other teams on their want list, they came back and grab another WCHA team (SCSU: "We're not invited? We're not a good fit anyway. Wait we're invited? Sure we would love to join, it's the best fit for us...").
So in the end the "new" NaCHo ends up being 60% of the remaining WCHA plus one new "good" program and one bottom feeder from the CCHA. Why not just ask Miami to join the WCHA when you were still members? It would have been the same net effect and woudn't have thrown the rest of western college hockey into a blender. It was greed and ego. It had nothing to do with making college hockey "better."

I think Tech will be just fine, if not better off in the new "WCCHA". Winning breeds winning and I expect Tech to do a lot more of it in the coming years. I don't think anyone would have called the CHA a powerhouse, but the Beavers did just fine and made a few tourney runs. I expect Tech might be able to do the same in the future. However just because Tech finds themselves in a better situation doesn't mean that I should kiss and make up with the teams that caused this mess. I'm 100% behind Tech, but I'm in no way going to validate what those teams did as even remotely acceptable. They can do whatever they want, I have no interest it in and could care less where they go from here, but they better not come knocking on the WCHA's door for a cup of sugar or anything else in the next 10 years if it all goes sour on them. That was the bed they wanted to make for themselves, now go sleep in it.

...And if the NaCHo is to blame, then isn't this an indictment of our college hockey conferences in general? I put it to you, fellow posters - isn't this an indictment of our entire college hockey system? Well, you can do whatever you want to Michigan Tech, but I'm not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the greatest college sport in America!

Was it over when the Sue bombed the WCHA?
The Sue? I thought this was all Denver's fault?
Forget it, he's rolling...

The penalty box is the big factor in my mind. Last Friday seemed okay (except for the major), but we took some dumb penalties on Saturday. It's all about how hard you skate.

Tommy Brown had his appendix removed and will be out a couple of weeks.

The locker room is hushed. The players look up as Mel enters stage right.
"soooo... about that injury curse; anybody have Ricky's phone number?"

Actually I though Cecere did a pretty solid job in the game he played. And he did save a goal.

Ricky is practicing with the Pioneers, one of their practice ice times is right before ours at the Dee.

He'll be in shape just in case. Good to know.

Kind of like we went to the CCHA for a couple years and then asked for a cup of sugar from the WCHA? ;) Yeah, good thing they hated us and wouldn't look past us leaving.
