Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal
No. An overwhelming majority are happy to pay more if it means competing. I cite recent attendance as a basis for the arguement. Would we rather pay $13 than $17? Of course, but in the end, the seats are fuller, so it must not be a big issue to most.
Like I said on the facebook page, I'd love to pay amount up there... I sent in a letter to the gazette at the end of the day friday:
To the editor:
As a lifelong Husky Hockey fan now forced to spend my weekends listening to (or attempting to watch the Internet stream of) the Husky Hockey games due my job related exile to Wisconsin, I would gladly pay the outrageous $12 price to watch WCHA hockey. The fact that the MTU is home to a Division I hockey team with such a rich history in a small relatively remote town is something residents should be proud of and supporting every weekend. With the recent head coaching hire the administration has proven it’s committed to bringing back a competitive level of college hockey to Houghton. Husky hockey is up there on the list of things I miss most about living in the Copper Country.
At last Saturday's Badger-Wildcat game in Madison it cost me $15 to park near the Kohl Center, but nowhere near as close as the parking lots at the SDC after my two hour drive there from the Appleton area. The ticket into the game was $24 for a seat in the second tier, much worse of a seat compared to any spot in the MacInnes, and not even the most expensive ticket available. I won’t even go into the concessions prices and the nachos paled in comparison to the delicious snack at Tech. With that said I strongly believe that $37 total to see Northern blow a two goal lead and lose in the third period is worth it every single time.
A quick search online at other WCHA school’s prices puts Tech in the very bottom of the price range. On the higher end is North Dakota at $32 and Minnesota at $25 per game for the cheapest seats available. Now granted these are typically top tier teams, but Beavers in Bemidji charge $20 and to see the Seawolves in Anchorage you’ve need to pay $18. When compared to those prices; is there really much to complain about for the cost of a game at Tech? I’m paying more for gas, gum, and hockey games than I did when I was 16 too, can we really expect Tech tickets to stay flat? I hear even the tooth fairy even gives out more than fifty cents these days. I wish I could only pay $17 dollars for a ticket and parking to NCAA hockey game after a fifteen minute drive from home.
One thing I’ll agree with Josh about, however, is that not allowing the Pep Band to play first after a goal. That’s just wrong! I believe the Huskies are on the uptick and wish I could be at home to watch every game, the residents of the Copper Country don't seem to know what a gem they have in their own backyard.
