Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season Thread: Let's go to Detroit. Twice.

Rohn or Witt should be on the first PP unit - not Gwilliam but I'm sure Russell will keep the "captain" there all year as he did with Kerr.

Gwills is an interesting case...His offense didn't really turn on until last year right before his stroke. I noticed his fumbles too, but the important thing to note is that he was getting plenty of quality chances. That, and he's an effing massive body and has five 'years' of experience, there's no reason any sane coach would take a guy like him off the first PP for a freshman or tiny sophomore after an exhibition game. Give the guy a few games to get back into the swing of things, and then start judging.

If tech wants to score, they better have have Olson and Baker on the same line; Dobson would make a good right winger for the line as he's an excellent skater and has good chemistry with Baker. I missed Gwilliams goal but I did hear the familiar boom of his shot missing the net and seen him once again not get a shot off on a nice set-up from Olson. It was deja vu all over again from when he played with Rouleau. Rohn or Witt should be on the first PP unit - not Gwilliam but I'm sure Russell will keep the "captain" there all year as he did with Kerr.

IMO, anything more than 10 goals for Gwilliam would be gravy. He is what he is - a big body who can skate, hit, and has decent hands, but is not the best finisher on the team. He'll score some important goals, but he's not going to be scoring them every weekend.

Liektag's a grinder. Soley did nothing to impress. The freshmen line did look decent.

I heard Lickteig's name a few times last night, and I think there will be an adjustment period for him now that he is healthy again. Dirk claimed that Soley added some muscle over the summer and is going to get a little extra playing time. I see him as a fourth liner again this year regardless, so we just need him to be a good checker and chip in a point here and there, IMO.

Siego is good - him and Cousens will be the top two. Doriott and Neillson are going to get burned alot by the WCHA teams.

Honestly, I don't anticipate Russell pairing the two of them together very much. I think, at least for now, they will rotate in and out of the third D pairing and see some PK time.

Overall, it's important to take this "win" at face value. It was a good opportunity for the coaches to experiment with lines, D pairs, etc. and to evaluate the freshmen. We have to keep in mind that normal practices with the coaching staff haven't even started yet, per NCAA rules. Also, this was our first game of the season, whereas it was Ryerson's fourth.

Basically, Tech now knows some of the items they have to work on before NMU and LSSU show up next weekend.

Yeah, no idea what the **** was going on there. The ***** playing the violin spinning around on a swing was pretty ****ed up too

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that came home, turned that on and thought, what in the hell is this?

Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season Thread: Let's go to Detroit. Twice.

Anyone know what the ticket situation is like for the game against Northern? I might be going up this weekend.

Robinson looked excellent. Always in position and had timely big saves on the break aways.

For the first time ever I agree with jsr. keep it up good commentary.

One comment. DU and other pp's features big guys in front of the net. something we did a poor job defending last year.

Yeah, homecoming and NMU. If you need help getting tickets, let me know. I can get you one for cheaper.

Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season Thread: Let's go to Detroit. Twice.

I just had to come on and say that the new suites are simply awesome and I am going to enjoy the new way to watch MTU hockey. Nothing better than a perch to watch from and a cold beer in hand:D legally:eek: !!The SDC Staff also did an excellent job with the catering and service before the game and during the game. They even let me bring a cake to them so they could deliver it to my girlfriend during the game for her birthday. A big thanks to the staff for the help;)

I have to say for an exhibition game, there was an excellent turn out of fans... I hope it continues through out the season. The Freshman line looked as if they had been playing together for a long time. They definately seemed to have a chemistry already. The odd-man rushes and breakaways were very disturbing, but we are also young at D this year -- hopefully they can get it together quickly. Robo did an awesome job... If he plays like that all season, he will simply steal at least 2-3 wins for us this season.

Any word on why a few upperclassmen didn't play like Kattelus and the others??

BTW Long time reader and first time poster:)

Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season Thread: Let's go to Detroit. Twice.

Wow Rob Green, wow. But no, I highly doubt that anyone was able to snap a picture because he was wearing a sports jacket over his jersey and when they announced his name and alum ties at the start of the game he flashed everyone with the jersey.

That was a pretty poorly constructed sentence wasn't it. Anyway was University services there snapping pictures, if so I'm almost sure atleast one of there photographers would of gotten a pic.

It very nice to see you say some nice things about Tech but I think you're missing something very important things about Gwilliam that a lot people have already pointed out Gwilliam, he's a big body with a lot of experience.

It's true you notice that Gwilliam isn't the best finisher, but realize that you notice this because he tends to have a lot of chances, this comes from experience. I am willing to bet that last year if you look at the games before his season ended Gwilliam was in the top three on the team on shots. I'm almost sure on our team that's the kind of player we want on our top unit a big body who's hard to move and has a way of putting himself in position to get shots. Now he just needs to finish better and he'll be a huge threat.

Finally, give the kid a break he had a bloody stroke and hasn't played competitive hockey in close to a year, give him a couple games that aren't an exhibition game to determine that he needs to be benched.

Leonard Britz was hitting some a really nice looking school photographer. Maybe she got some pics if those two weren't too busy comparing the size of their lenses. She took a bunch of pictures of the Misfits, too. I'd love to get a hold of those.

If you asked they will give them to you. Where do you think I keep managing to get pictures from?

Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season Thread: Let's go to Detroit. Twice.

ask who? the university?

the guy who's in charge of photos who's came I can't remember because it's kind of complicated, but it falls under University Communications.

Edit: Just checked the website and it looks like it may be someone new in the position now. The web site has Karina Jousma listed as photography coordiantor and her email is kahautam@mtu.edu
I use to talk to Joe Pyykkonen who's email was japyykko@mtu.edu.
