Michigan State vs. Michigan - Can't we all just get along?

Re: Michigan State vs. Michigan - Can't we all just get along?

I dont think goaltending will be a difference, but it will be an interesting storyline.I think the experience factor in terms of the rivalry is only an issue at Yost on Friday. The Munn branch of the MSU library will be hit-or-miss.
I watched the Miami series. Hogan gave up 3 on 13 Friday, 5 on 29 on Saturday, played very poor positionally, and had a 5-hole they could have driven Miami's bus through. He was a mess.

Palmisano has been solid, although he looked shaken after the fluky 2nd goal of the 2nd UNO game. I think Comley might be crazy (like a fox) enough to start Jarosz on the road Friday night. He has been solid as well.

I think goaltending will be the biggest difference, with penalties a close second.

I'm sure our 20 year-old freshmen contingent has experienced somewhat Yost-like atmospherics before. Intensity as I used the term applied to the extra-hard hitting involved.

Palmisano stopping shots will be a bigger factor than however many "F... Y.. State" chants rain down.

If the students can get under the nerves of Miller or whatever the goalies name is.... ;) Or is it that little guy, still? :D

Post content- we have a DAY until the game. Why ruin the fun now? FYS! :)

Hogan looked like he knew that there's no back up, and didn't care. Realistically, having the back up being the younger brouther of one former Captian and the current capitan doesn't bode well.

Here's the key- if you D can keep UM's shots on Palmisano easy for a period or so, the puck will be a beach ball by the end of the game AND the posts will look 5x as thick. That's last Friday's game in a nutshell.

And if you can pressure the D, especially Summers, into stupid break out plays, well, God know how bad the score will end up.

It's actually Alban, as far as you know :)

I thought Mike Buzak was still there?

So, I'm going to Yost tomorrow.

How many times should I and my friends expect to get stabbed and/or spat at while in attendance?

Don't show fear. Weasles smell fear. Also wear a yellow slicker for multiple reasons.

Re: Michigan State vs. Michigan - Can't we all just get along?

Bobby Jarosz has played at Yost...he came in when Lerg was run in the 2nd period in 06-07. I might give him the nod based on his experience and his solid play so far this season. Drew is my guy Saturday back at Munn for sure. As for Hogan, reminds me of Billy Saur headcase early in his career.

As for going to Yost..it all depends on where you sit. The long time season ticket holders who have respect for the rivalry are between the bluelines on the scorers' box side of the building. Its the hooligans sitting on the ends that forget this has been an even rivalry over the last 20 years.

I have to give M hockey fans a little more credit than the football crowd...your delusion is just a little more grounded than the idiots over at the Big outHouse.

Wow, I'm a hooligan! :) That's cool.

So you don't fear the endzones- many of us have had the same seats for 12 years. In the end zones. It's the wallmart wolverines that are the problems- just like Fball and Bball. Students can be taunted into doing bad things, but they behave well assuming nobody gets back into their face. Take it with the same fun they are having, and it will be ok.

Funny story- my first MSU game was way back in November 9, 1990, before the craze really took off- actually the year it took off. And I was on the outside edge of the student section. Right above the blue line..... Yes, the student section ran ONLY from blue line to blue line with room saved for both UM and opposition parents. So there I am, 5 rows up, and go figure, a older sparty family sits right next to us. That was the last time there were more MSU fans at Yost than UM fans. We had a good time with them- no spitting or fighting. And thankfully, we won.

Exactly. And that is my policy when I go to away games too. I really enjoyed the taunting one Miami fan gave us (he was wearing a green polo shirt with a popped collar to the game....I asked why he couldn't at least wear his school colors).

Taunting opposing fans can be a ton of fun. We've had plenty of friendly taunting in our thread this week, and I've participated in friendly tauntings at Yost and other college arenas.

If you sit in the student section at Yost and wear the opposing team's colors, expect to have people call you an ***hole. And you'll probably have newspaper thrown at you after the line-ups are announced....but we throw newspapers at each other, so play along. It's not like tOSU....those jerks throw batteries (or at least one has).

No, not true at all. There are alums that also sit on the north and south ends. The north end usually has a sizable contingent of visiting fans, so I'll give your "hooligans" comment partial credit. The best way to avoid issues in a visiting arena is to keep your comments to your own team, and do not antagonize the students. Either way, the feeble old people in yellow event staff jackets are pretty useless. Most cases they can't sniff out a situation before it happens, so discretion is the better part of valor. Michigan is 37-35-15 in the past 20 seasons versus MSU.

What delusion are you speaking of? That there wasn't a rivalry? That tends to happen when a team is dominated for the past 40 years. I mean, MSU went to how many Rose Bowls since 1966? How many Big Ten Championships? NC's? BCS games? H2H record?

Things may have changed the last two seasons, but it doesn't wipe away too much of the past until it because a long term trend. I think it is more of a matter of the Michigan program tanking more than the Spartan program improving.

Michigan hockey fans OTOH, are grounded. Last year was as much of a culture shock to us seeing your program digress as any fan. But we also knew you'd be back. Hasn't changed much, though, at the Munn Mausoleum has it?
Just the same there is a mutual resp, er dislike. It's the one gray area where neither team can claim too much superiority beyond last year's results. It's where the sane fan can disregard the football and bounceyball fansmack.

Re: Michigan State vs. Michigan - Can't we all just get along?

Sorry, I should have applied the sarcasm filter. Red Berenson, St. Louis Blues, six goals in a game in 1968, etc., etc. Heckuva player back in the day. My mom put in two years at U-M (61-63) and said she had a crush on him.

As for the AD position, it will be interesting to see who succeeds Bill Martin and whether that person is a hockey person. The new MSU AD has made it clear through many actions that football and basketball are much further up the totem pole than hockey. It would be a shame for the sport in general if U-M were to go that same route.

Whomever the new AD will be will not touch the hockey program as long as Berenson is running it. I'll guarantee you that will be a condition of job acceptance. Besides, it's self funded and has no real attendance issues. As long as the product on the ice puts butts in the seats, the new AD will be happy to focus his attention on fixing other issues.

Re: Michigan State vs. Michigan - Can't we all just get along?

Teddy isn't as ancient as you might think. Him and I had the same professor for Real Analysis.
I can see how Cauchy and Riemann could drive someone to that.

Oh and **** Michigan. Let's go Green!

Re: Michigan State vs. Michigan - Can't we all just get along?

I think MSU has been the better team thus far, however experience plays a major role in rivalry games, and with half the roster making their first trip to Yost I think things could get ugly Friday night.

Michigan is very young too and after watching the disaster last weekend I'm not so confident that Michigan will wipe the ice with sparty.

As you said, this is a rivalry, much more than football or basketball. Hockey is very competitive (last year with standing), this should be a good series this year. Of course I enjoyed last years beat-downs as well...:o

Re: Michigan State vs. Michigan - Can't we all just get along?

OH TRUST ME, i was not saying we own you guys on the gridiron...I will never dispute that Michigan has owned us on the football field for decades...the only point that doesnt hold up is your point about NC's. Since MSU joined the Big Ten in 1951 MSU has won a portion of 6 national titles...UM has part of 1.

My point was simply that true blue UM hockey fans have a healthy respect for MSU hockey as I believe we have for you guys. Going to Yost is fun, in my opinion...not scary. We all joke about "little brother" and "little sister" but the hockey programs are bigger than that.

I will never forget the 2001 (or 2000 maybe) frozen four in Albany. MSU and UM were on opposite sides of the bracket and I clearly remember Michigan fans supporting MSU against North Dakota as they were hoping a UM vs. MSU final. Im not saying they were singing the MSU Fight Song, but they were vocally supportive. I dont believe we would ever see that again.

I respect sparty hockey, but at the same time I hate it. Like I said eaerlier, it is the only sport that actually has a true even rivalry. When I was at Michigan the players hated sparty, even though they grew up with many of the players. As Nystrom told me, "It's just something about those ugly green jerseys that makes me want to check them through the glass." Of ccourse Eric is from New York so he really didn't know too many of spartys players before-hand.

Not sure if this is what you were going for, but I don't think we've done a very good job at heckling traitorous Ann Arbor natives (Palmisiano, Cole, etc.). I think that should be made a point of emphasis.
