Michigan State 2009-2010

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

It's just hard to believe that this is what the roster looks like two years removed from a national championship. I'm beating the proverbial dead horse, but MSU's hockey program capitalized on that momentum when recruiting over the past couple of seasons like Kate Moss would capitalize at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Can you blame that on the economy too?

That doesn't help us nail down which 6 or 7 defensemen we open with next week. Got anything?

Nobody thinks less of Comley's recruiting than I do, but I don't know how much momentum that national championship actually gives them. Most top players are deciding on a school 2-3 years in advance of actually going there. Why would they care about a team that got lucky and played four games above their head at the right time? Those four games weren't enough to shake the head coach's reputation.

Which team exactly is the team that you cheer for?

I'm making my hotel reservations for the Clarkson series. Any suggestions? Close to the arena/campus and close to a nice pub would be preferable.

$$$$ Kellogg Center and Marriott - Kellogg Center is across Grand River from serveral drinking/eating establishments and 10 minute walk from Munn Arena. Marriott - same, but it's about twice as far from arena

$$$ Residence Inn - opposite end of campus from Munn, but within walking distance of a couple bars.

$$$ Towne Place Inn and Suites - a short walk from the Pizza house, which has a bar ... and from several eateries. But it's outside the opposite end of campus from arena.

$$ Clarion / Quality Inn - west of Campus on Grand River - Jimmy's Pub, Trippers and take transportation to the game.

$$ Fairfield Inn - by the freeway - you'd need a taxi for either sports or drinking.

$ Super 8 - across road from Paul Revere's Tavern and a cab ride from the arena

In yesterday's Media Day session Rick Comley said if MSU started today here's what he'd put out there-

1. Grant - Sucharski - Tropp
2. Rowe - Leveille - Gazley
3. Golembiewski - Forfar - Walrod (all freshmen)
4. Chelios - ?? - Hayes

He also said 3 freshmen would be in top 6 defense
Krug - Petry
Josepher - Grassi
Crandell - Shelgren / Buttery

In other words, all 9 freshmen would be dressed for action. Only 4 to 5 of last year's freshmen (out of 11) would be.

Finally, Jarosz would have more time in net this season than Palmissano did behind Lerg last season.

Thanks for the info. I'm going have my car with me, so a drive to the arena isn't a big deal... it's, of course, preferable not to drive after the pub. It will be about an 11 hour trip out there for me, but I'm looking forward to seeing some of the tradition and the "big school" feel. On the way back, I'm stopping in *whisper* Columbus for a few days to visit friends.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

I think the Mariott would be the best choice but i have no idea how expensive it is. A couple years ago, me and some friends had to stop in there to go to the bathroom before or after a party, i can't remember, but it looked pretty nice. Also, they told us we can't go in unless we are staying there...However, it'd be a decent walk to the rink but it's right in the center of town so you would have a lot of choices as far as bars and eating are concerned except you would surely be surrounded by students wherever you go.

Many rooms are sold out for that weekend. I'm down in Okemos myself. If there is anything related to football the rooms close to campus disappear. (At least that has been my experience.)

Yeah, definitely the Marriott is in Eatery/Bar Central. Fall weekends expect to spend about $150 per night.

And Clarkson's an "away" football weekend. Wow.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Did anyone catch the alternate captains? Rowe and Tropp.

I have always liked Rowe and i think he sets a fine example on the ice. i've always liked Tropp for that matter as well but i guess i you could say i didn't really see that coming. Good for them and i bet it just killlls UMICHRULZ or whatever.

There were a couple of good articles in the State news today about the hockey team. A lot of encouraging words have been said by players and coach Comley. I hope they truly believe it.

Oh, i just noticed you said this. I would strongly advise to walk wherever you go if you are staying on campus or right in downtown east lansing. Parking can be a ***** to find and they will ticket at any chance you give them. Some walks might be a bit more lengthy to anybody who doesn't prefer to go many places on foot but it really isn't that bad. If you want to go into nearby cities of Lansing or Okemos then drive or take a bus but for exploring campus/east lansing/walking to Munn, i believe walking would be best. I guess you could pay to park by the Football stadium next to Munn but walking is free.
