And this is exactly why I love the MIAC.

And this is exactly why I love the MIAC.

Here's what I know from today:

GAC sweeps Hamline in two low scoring games.
CM and St. Kates split in two, one goal games. (2-1 CM today)
SMU and CSB split in two, one goal games. (1-0 SMU today)
Olaf takes 3 of 4 points from Augsburg (2-1 in OT tonight)
UST sweeps Bethel (3-1 tonight)

Bethel and Augsburg = 3 points Bethel
CM and HU = CM sweep

SCU and UST = Split
Olaf and Bens = Split

I would like to pat my own back this week. I missed 1 point of the CM/Ham series and 2 points of the UST/SCU series.

Re: Miac 2011-2012

Here we go:

This Week's Matchups
St. Olaf vs. Gustavus - GAC Sweeps
St. Kate's vs. Hamline - St. Kate's Sweeps
Concordia @ St. Mary's - Concordia Sweeps
Augsburg vs St. Thomas - St. Thomas Sweeps
Bethel vs. St. Ben's - Bethel 3 points

I don't really suspect any big surprises this week. But then again, I am not really surprised by surprises in this league any more.

If my predictions all hold up, standings would be as follows going into the final weekend:

1 - GAC -- 31 points
2 - Concordia -- 23 points
3 - St Thomas -- 21 points
4 - Bethel -- 18 points
5t - St Olaf -- 16 points
5t - St Kates -- 16 points
7 - St Bens -- 10 points
8 - St Marys -- 9 points
9 - Hamline -- 9 points
10 - Augsburg -- 7 points

Top 5 teams get a playoff bid. I believe GAC, Concordia, and St. Thomas are pretty much guarentees. Bethel would have to really stumble in their last two weeks. So it comes down to St. Olaf and St. Kate's, as the rest of the pack can't really catch them if the top teams hold suit. And, perfectly, St. Olaf and St. Kate's play each other in the final weekend. Winner is in, loser is out.

A split would result in the implementation of the tie breakers:

Playoff Seeding Tie Breakers
(Based only on conference competition)
1. Results of head to head competition. - theoretical splits
2. Most MIAC regular season wins. - both would have 9 I believe
3. Combined results against all teams above tied teams. - Olaf would be 1-6-1 / St. Kates would be 3-7-0, giving them the final playoff spot
4. Results against all teams in rank order
5 .Head to head goal differential
6. Number of overtime losses.
7. Coin Toss.

But, then again, anything can happen negating all of this.

This Week's Matchups
St. Olaf vs. Gustavus - GAC Sweeps 4 pts
St. Kate's vs. Hamline - Kate's Sweeps 4 pts

What happened to St. Thomas and Gustavus this past weekend. I really thought there was no way both teams would not get 4 points. Intresting

Its interesting that head to head differential is the 5th tiebreaker...its the 2nd in the NCHA.

I am less surprised about St. Thomas's loss to Augsburg because St. Thomas hasn't been all that consistent this year and Augsburg has definitely shocked some teams this year.

But the GAC score is just plan odd. They play there back up goalie and give up 5 goals? And never pull her? Just unusual. Probably has something to do with the fact that they have already clinched, but I know there has to be some pride at stake in losing to a middle of the pack MIAC team.

Re: Miac 2011-2012

Standings after this weekend:

1. Gustavus - 29
2. Concordia - 22
3t. Bethel - 19
3t. St. Thomas - 19
5. St. Olaf - 18
6. St. Catherine - 16
7. Saint Mary's - 10
8t. Augsburg - 9
8t. Saint Benedict - 9
8t. Hamline - 9

Gustavus is locked for 1. The only way Concordia doesn't get 2 is if they stumble against Augsgurb, which I don't see happening. So...

1. GAC
2. Concordia

St. Thomas plays Hamline and should get 4 points. Bethel has a tougher weekend with St. Mary's. St. Thomas holds the head-to-head tiebreaker against Bethel with a sweep. So...

3. St. Thomas
4. Bethel

The 5th spot comes down to St. Kate's and Olaf. I wrote somewhat extensively about this last week. With Olaf's win against GAC, St. Kate's has a tougher path to get there but 3 points this weekend would lock up the 5th spot for St. Kate's. I don't necessarily know if this will happen so..

5. St. Kate's/St. Olaf

Not to mention..that loss could potentially knock them out of pool C contention if they were to stumble in the MIAC playoffs

Concordia @ Augsburg - Concordia Sweeps
St. Ben's vs Gustavus - GAC sweeps

Standings:
*1 - Gustavus - 33 points
*2 - Concordia - 26 points
*3 - St. Thomas - 23 points
*4 - Bethel - 21 points
*5 - St. Olaf - 20 points
6 - St. Catherine - 18 points
7 - St. Mary's - 12 points
8t - Augsburg - 9 points
8t - Hamline - 9 points
8t - St. Bens - 9 points

Gustavus' Allie Schwab headlines MIAC Women's Hockey Awards
3/1/2012
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Gustavus women's hockey team captured its eighth-straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship last week, and Thursday, the Gusties had more reasons to celebrate when the conference announced its 2011-12 MIAC Women's Hockey Awards. The league champs placed four on the All-conference team, headlined by MIAC Player-of-the-Year Allie Schwab.

The Gusties weren't the only team to come away with numerous individual honors, as Schwab (Stillwater, Minn.) was joined by MIAC Shelia Brown award-winner Rachael Geng (South St. Paul, Minn.) of Bethel and MIAC Coach-of-the-Year Brett Bruininks of Concordia. Geng was also one of four Bethel players to receive All-MIAC honors, with St. Thomas also earning four All-Conference selections and Bruininks' Cobbers placing three on the team.

One look at the MIAC statistical leader board proved Schwab's worth to the Gusties' success this season as she was honored at the league's top player. The senior forward led the MIAC in goals (22), points (40) and game-winning goals (seven) in overall games, while ranking fifth in assists (18), second in power play goals (eight) and fourth in power play points (13). Schwab was just as in good in conference play, leading the league in points (30), game-winning goals (five) and power play points (nine) while finishing second in goals (16) and power play goals (five) and third in assists (14).

Schwab's offensive prowess helped the Gusties roll to their unprecedented eighth-straight league title with a 16-1-1 MIAC record and 33 points - eight more than runner-up Concordia. Gustavus finished the regular season 21-2-2 and the sixth-ranked Gusties open the MIAC Playoffs Thursday as the top seed. Schwab's Player-of-the-Year honor caps a decorated career for the senior, who added her second All-Conference selection as well. She was also named to the first team in 2009-10 with Honorable Mention honors in 2008-09 and 2010-11, with All-Rookie Team recognition in 2008-09 as well.

Geng - a senior defender for Bethel - was selected as the conference's recipient of the 2011-12 Shelia Brown Award. The award is given to a senior who has made a long-term contribution to her team's success, and who has consistently competed with good sportsmanship. Geng was selected based on four main criteria: team leadership; sportsmanship and volunteer work; academic excellence; and hockey skills and production.

In addition to her excellence off the ice, Geng was a major factor in Bethel's season, which resulted in a 12-10-4 overall record, a 9-7-2 conference mark and a trip to the MIAC Playoffs. Her 19 overall points are the fourth-most by a defensive player in the MIAC, and her 13 points in conference play also rank in the top five. She ranks eighth in the league among all players with 14 assists and 11 power play points, and her All-Conference selection comes after three-straight Honorable Mention honors her first three seasons. The fifth-seeded Royals knocked of No. 4 St. Olaf in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs Tuesday, and Thursday night Schwab and Geng will face off as their teams meet in the semifinals.

In just his second season in Concordia, Bruininks has made quite an impact on the Cobbers' program. The 2011-12 Concordia finished as the runner-up to the Gusties with a 14-4-5 overall record, a 10-3-5 MIAC mark and 25 points. The Cobbers are the No. 2 seed and have home-ice advantage against No. 3 St. Thomas in Thursday's MIAC Playoff semifinals, and are currently ranked No. 10 in all of Division III.

A win Thursday would match the program record for wins in a season, which Bruininks' team set in his first season with 15 wins in 2010-11. In just two seasons, Bruininks record is 29-12-9 overall, 18-9-9 in the MIAC, and he's taken Concordia to the MIAC Playoff semifinals both years. This season, his Concordia team placed three players on the All-Conference team, and two more on the All-Rookie Team.

Other notable honorees are senior Anna Carlson of Bethel and Kristen Latta of St. Olaf. The two were named to the All-Conference team again this season to earn the honor for each of their four collegiate seasons. Four players also earned their third All-MIAC selection, as Gustavus' Lindsay Hjelm, Concordia's Katelyn Dold and St. Olaf's Nicole Stumpf each earned their third-straight honor, and St. Thomas' Meghan Parker received the honor for the third time after also earning All-MIAC honors in 2008-09 and 2010-11.

Gustavus' Amanda Cartony, Bethel's Biz Huss, St. Thomas' Kaylee Keys and Bethel's Cristina Masten each received their second-straight All-MIAC honor this season, while St. Catherine's Kelsey Abrahamson earned the third total All-MIAC honor of her career after a first-team selection in 2009-10 and an Honorable Mention in 2008-09. In addition to the Gusties, Tommies, Royals and Cobbers on the honor squad, St. Olaf placed two players on the first team while St. Catherine, Saint Benedict, Augsburg and Hamline all had one player honored.

In addition to the individual awards and All-Conference team, the MIAC also honored an All-Rookie Team, and 14 players were named All-Conference Honorable Mention.

As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the sixth annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's hockey. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Re: Miac 2011-2012

I am unsure the actual process but I am pretty sure that the # of spots a team gets are determined by where they finish in the conference.

Does anyone know how the voting goes?

From my understanding the coaches nominate the players on their team they believe should get conference honors a week or two prior to when they actually meet. They then meet and just go "around the table" and basically say yes or no. All coaches get an opinion. Some coaches have to fight hard for their players, others are an obvious pick. Those who disagree will sometimes fight back, others just show disapproval, others don't say anything at all.

Re: Miac 2011-2012

About 60 minutes from now:

UST at Concordia and Bethel at Gustavus

Can Concordia beat the Tommies three times this year? Can Justice stop Masten and Huss?
