Merrimack Offseason Thread: Everyone else seems to have one.

A roller-coaster season for the Warriors. Early success ledto a first time # 1 ranking, but a second half of the season swoon dropped them to 5th in HE. Took the Black Bears to 3 "hotly contested" games at Alfond, but couldn't get to the Garden.

Roster turnover:

Flanigan, Sheen, Madsen (hope he recovers from that gruesome injury), Todd, Velleca, Stollery and Demers (and oh, that Canatta kid). Represents loss of 44% of goals scored, and vitually 100% of goals saved.

Key returnees, Fowards: Collins, Toomey, Bates, Bly, Myers. Recruits include Scotti (Jr. Bruins) and Ben Bahe both of whom look to have some offensive skill. Would LOVE to see Murphy from Penicton come in for '12-'13. Bates, Toomey, Bly and Myers have some serious wheels (esp. Bates) Secondary guys (Singleton, Gould, Heffernan) have some decent size. Will be interesting to see how Dennehey puts them together.

Key Returnees, Defense: Bigos, Haywood, Ellis, Kolomatis. They'll miss Stollery, but this is a pretty solid group. For all his goonery, Bigos has shown some flashes of skill, and has an absolute bomb from the point. Maybe Dennehey makes him a captain and he rachets down the "thug life" behavior (Tupac reference intended :p) I think Kolomatis could be very, very good next year. McCarthy will see more ice time, and the recruits have some size (Cronin and Bergland, both from the BCHL).

Key returnees, Goal: ....anyone, anyone, Bueller? Marrotta, Tirronen? Who knows. Fingers crossed.

Not a fan of Bigos. He repeatedly puts Merrimack in a bind with stupid penalties. He hurts the team more than he helps it.

This is the real wildcard. Even with solid goaltending it could be rough, as Cannata was other-worldly for Merrimack and the Warriors still finished 5th and couldn't get past Maine in the QFs.

Any word on the non-conference schedule yet?

If you don't like Bigos, you're going to LOVE incoming freshman D Matt Cronin, who put up Bigos-like PIM numbers in the BCHL:

2009-10 Langley Chiefs BCHL 52 GP/92 PIMs
2010-11 Westside Warriors BCHL 52 GP/100 PIMs
2011-12 Surrey Eagles BCHL 58 GP/109 PIMs

Two words come to mind for 2012-2013: The Year of the Bash Brothers

Terrific. Listen, I care about winning, and at very best Bigos' negatives cancel out his positives with his penalties. Bringing in another guy like him isn't what Merrimack needs unless they (this Cronin guy, Bigos) change their game dramatically - and what good would they be at that point?

But if Bigos leaves, who'll challenge former BU Terrier Eric Gryba for the Hockey East all time penalty minutes record? (just guessing about Gryba; does he actually hold the record?)

Would like to read some thoughts on the other players; seems like they will have a fair amount of speed up front, scoring will continue to be a challenge, and defense will be physical. Redmen2002, nice to see you chiming in (congrats on BC's title, I know you are a big fan).

Re: Merrimack Offseason Thread: Everyone else seems to have one.

I predict Marotta will be our primary, having seniority and a couple years of tutelage under Jim Healey and Joe Canatta. I saw nothing in his one start and scattered relief appearances to make me particularly concerned. Our D looks to remain solid as well, Kolomatis probably our rookie of the year in my opinion. It's the scoring that needs to improve if we're going to remain relevant in this league.

Anyone been by campus? Have the newest round of renovations begun on the Volpe yet?

I was there 2 weeks ago. Nothing going on outside. What new renovations are planned?
I have heard rumor there are big expansion plans but need many approvals by the town?

They are adding a second ice sheet for practice/the junior team and a new lobby out where the parking lot currently is. The Volpe could definitely use some more concession space and bathrooms.

Just renewed today. Season should be interesting and this year will prove if Dennehy has a program or just hit the lottery and got Cannata. Can't wait for the schedule to come out.

Who's making the trip to Alaska?

Re: Merrimack Offseason Thread: Everyone else seems to have one.

Merrimack will be playing at the VWA in Manchester again on Saturday 1/26/13.

Re: Merrimack Offseason Thread: Everyone else seems to have one.

Per Eagle Tribune's Mike McMahon, Capts. for next season are Jr. D-man Jordan Heywood (C) with A's going to fellow Jr. D-man Brendan Ellis and Sr. D-man Kyle Bigos. Bigos already has had plenty of experience talking with the refs, so now he can do it in an "official" capacity.:p

'11-'12 Awards:
MVP - Joe Cannata
Top Defensive Player - Karl Stollery
Warrior Award - Stollery
Unsung Hero - Jeff Velleca
ROY - Connor Toomey

Re: Merrimack Offseason Thread: Everyone else seems to have one.

I would be really interested to see what a move to half shields would do to our team. I'm afraid it will work to our disadvantage.. Bigos will probably concuss someone and get deported.

That isn't as bad as it looks...that is less than 2 minutes per game, or 1 penalty per game. I'm sure a few 5 minute majors didn't help. I'd like a physical presence on the blue line, but not one that is going to take 2, 3 or even 4 penalties a game like Bigos did on a few occassions.

Gryba: 354 PIMs in 4 years
Bigos: 346 PIMs in 3 years
Diamond: 320 PIMs in 3 years

...So you're telling me there's a chance...

Not sure who the record holder is, but if these three aren't in the Top Ten, I'll eat my hat...
