Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

HE title? Def possible, but I don't know about NCAA title. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see MC back in the dance though

I'd agree with putting Merrimack in the running for both the regular season and HE championship. Let's not get carried about the grand prize just yet, but I do expect Merrimack to make a legitimate run at a second consecutive NCAA berth.

The only thing I see holding Merrimack back is their knack for going to the sin bin. It's been going on for years and in part it is the way the play their game. However, they are going to be burnt with teams like a BC or a BU that have the offensive firepower to take advantage of nine or ten PP.

Do you think we'll get our first look at Myers, Gould or Jardine this Saturday night against Army? Kolomatis looked good, I thought.
You would think more freshman could enter the lineup against Army, especially since this is another one game weekend and it's a non-league opponent. It's a good chance to get the newbies revved up in game action, without HEA points on the line.

I also noticed that Singleton had 4 SOG, not too shabby for a first game. Maybe he gets a second look?

Also, in terms of our vets, Heffernan really played well in Orono, he was skating hard, driving to the net and nearly banked in a goal in off Ouelette. Hopefully this is a harbinger of good things to come for him.

I agree, too many penalties will hurt the team. Hopefully they can play full strength more this season.

Not worried about the penalties. This team blocks shots like none other I've seen. I'll take an amped up physical style of play that bogs BU and BC down in exchange for killing a few penalties. Not saying 9 is the magic number...if they were all consecutive that's nearly an entire period on the kill - not acceptable. But that being said, I'm not worried. They'll settle down as the season progresses and figure out what they can or can't do (although consistency isn't exactly a Hockey East reffing strong point).

When you play big physical hockey, especially in a small-hockey style league, you're gonna go to the box. This team is built around that type of play, worked for them last year, it will again this year.

..."...worked for them last year, it will again this year."...

It worked last year when scoring goals was not a problem. It remains to be seen if this year's team will be able to score goals when needed. The guys that need to be scoring won't have the energy if they are spending equivalent to almost one period playing 4 on 5. I agree, continue to play physical, no problem, lazy penalties, which include most stick infractions and holding, are the ones that can be eliminated.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Solid win Friday night, I think they will win a lot more games this year similar to this one, low scoring, defensive. We can't really expect 3 or 4 goal differences in most games with the offense that left. I don't think we need to focus too much on the freshman this year. It seems like the top 3 lines will be veterans most nights, with the 4th line having 2 or 3 freshman getting less ice time. I believe it will be on the veterans from the lower lines last year that need to pick it up offensively and contribute, rather than a freshman coming out of nowhere.

Some people were mentioning how to listen to the game online, I believe that the AM 1400 audio with John and Mike can be streamed on its own through the athletics site, and should be free of charge (although I haven't checked this year yet, it has been in the past).

Just got my tickets, section 9 row G. As of 2 days ago I heard there were 500 left, so they may be getting close to a sell out.

Predictions? I'm looking forward to seeing some more from the freshman. Maybe even a third period split between marotta and the Finn if things go well?

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

I think they'll win, I'm not 100% that they'll be up by enough in 3rd to allow Joe to come out. They can't afford to give up a lead late to a lesser non-conference team. They need to take care of business against the teams they're supposed to beat like they did last year.

I have a homecoming package for Saturday, includes the hockey tickets for Uconn, still need to pick up tickets for NU.

IMHO, Cannata needs more rest this year. He seemed to struggle at times down the stretch. If Merrimack cannot beat UCONN, Army, etc without Joe in net, that doesn't bode well for our future. I'm not saying Cannata shouldn't start one of these two games, but I'd like to see him get a rest in one of them, maybe UCONN game so he's well rested for the home conference opener.

Re: Merrimack College 2011-2012 Season Thread - vita post Da Costa

Home conference opener is the night before against NU, but I agree that if they beat NU on Friday night, they might give Cannata a rest on Saturday vs. UConn.

Yes. That's what I meant. I believe Marotta should start Saturday against UCONN.

He needs to play. Every program he has ever been injvolved with he has been the horse. BB & N, BC High, US Natl team, even youth hockey. Always played 90% of the games. maybe he might get a blow this weekend but zero chance both and zero chance he wont play 90%.
That is what he is used to, that is what Vancouver likes and that is what Dennehy likes.

Hey idiot...I never suggested he be put into a rotation. I suggested he not play against Alabama-Huntsville, UCONN, etc... He might have always been the work horse, but if you saw him down the stretch, he still kept them in some games, but let in some questionable goals where he might have lost focus. He's a great goalie, but he needs a little bit of rest.

Also you spew so much crap, it's amazing. You either are lying out of your mind or make it to quite a few youth hockey games. In all honesty, you should know nothing about any of these players until they hit high school. Scouting them before then just makes you a sicko.

I completely agree. It would be very difficult for Joe to start every game against. I hope that guy is Joe's dad or he is the creepiest guy ever.

He isn't Joe's dad, so that leaves us with..the creepiest guy ever.

Simply stating that some goalies like to play every game, he is one. When he went to natl program he played about 90%+. The Brown goalie was his backup. Same as in the NHL, some goalies play almost every game outside certain back to backs. If Thomas can do it for the last 2/3 months of season and the entire playoffs, all over n america. At late 30's, a 21 year old can do it in his backyard with a 30 game schedule.
If you have watched how Dennehy has used him since he was 18, it is very clear he gets that approach and endorses it.

Hokydope, Joe struggled down the stretch last year with injuries and fatigue. I hope he gets more rest this year. End of story. I like Joe. He's a nice kid and a great goaltender, but he needs rest. If Merrimack cannot beat UAH, UCONN, Army, etc with Marotta or Tirronen, we're in serious trouble for the future.

Not arguing with you irishneednotapply. Simply stating that I belive that is how it will be run. Time will tell.
