Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

maybe this will put an end to the extremely outdated notion that Merrimack is a just a team full of bullies. Whitney literally jumping out of the bench attacking a Mack player from behind.

But whatever it's hockey, these kids are all...kids. Their emotions are gonna get the best of them sometimes that's just the way it is. York was literally pulling him back to the bench.

Great hard fought game. All 3 games were. This is a huge leap for the program. Not only can we skate with BC, we can out muscle them, out shoot them, and out play them. Props to the Mr. Dennehy and to the team, they've worked hard for this and taking 4 out of 6 HE points from BC is a great reward. Keep moving forward now.

Not likely. There are the Sterlippo fans who can see a game objectively and still root for their team and there are the others that will come back with excuses about the rink, it's a one player team or they're a bunch of thugs. This Mack team could take the season series from BU as well given the remaining game is in North Andover. I'd e very surprised if they're not at the Garden in March.

Great for the school, the program and kudos to Coach Dennehy for following up a contract extension with a big W!

I didn't see last night's game, but I've seen every BU-Merrimack game for the last 3 years and it's pretty clear that the Mack still has plenty of thugs. They're definitely a talented team and they're definitely a legitimate HE contender, but let's not pretend they're clean.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Way to go Mack. I've always thot the center of true thuggery lies in the City of Boston, in more ways than one :D

I see probably 6-7 Mack games a year and can assure you they're not thugs. I do recall how BU fans would talk about how tough Gryba was until last year when Bigos arrived and tossed him around a few times. Then all of a sudden it was "look at what a thug Bigos is". You can't have it both ways right? Who else on that team would be considered a "thug"? Bates? DaCosta? Stollery? All 5'9" of him. You're kidding yourself and being quite hypocritical as well.

I'll judge this Mack team for true thuggery skillz when they play those thugs from Maine. ;) My guess is that if Maine wins, they're clean...if Mack winz, team full of thugs. :D

Most of Gryba's penalties were stupid, but not really dirty. I've seen more hits from behind and hits after the whistle in the 10 or so games I've watched Bigos than I ever saw from Gryba. I said it on our blog and I have no problem saying it again here- Bigos is the dirtiest college hockey player I've seen.

In fairness to his teammates, none of them are anywhere close to being the thug he is. I'm willing to bet he accounts for well over half of Merrimack's thuggery. So in that sense, I probably shouldn't say Merrimack still has plenty of thugs so much as they still have plenty of thuggery. Although I've also seen cheap shots from Todd, Ross, Allan, Heywood, Brodhag and Flanigan. The beautiful thing about doing live blogs is that I can go back and see exactly who had the cheap shots, which is what I just did. I haven't seen enough MC games to say if those guys are consistently dirty or if what I saw was more isolated for each individual, but the point is that I've seen more dirty stuff from MC than any other HE team.

Have I seen dirty stuff from other teams, including BU? Of course. But just not as much of it. Maybe BU's the only team MC plays dirty against and the 11 matchups I've seen over the last 3 years are all aberrations, but that doesn't seem likely.

Did you comment on your blog when that Merrimack player was crushed with a blow to the head in the near corner to the Merrimack bench? I'm sure you didn't, because you are a homer. You are a tool. Most BU fans are very knowledgeable, but you are a fool. Just because you said it, doesn't mean it's true. That's laughable. I'm sure we could have the Merrimack reporters go back and find some thuggery activities by some of your precious BU players.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

i'm sure i will regret interjecting myself into your little slapfight, but your argument is specious because it is a chicken and egg kind of thing.. if we are operating under the assumption that merrihack is dirty, then you would expect teams to react negatively to that during the games. so a better comparison than 'what did BU players do in the merrihack game' would be 'how does BU consistently play against other teams vs how does merrihack consistently play against other teams'

You mean this? (I'm Scott BTW)

8:13 Arielle (BHB): Flanigan is down and in a lot of pain.
8:13 [Comment From Iceman] Whose fault
8:14 Scott (BHB): Well, Escobedo completely steamrolled him.
8:14 Arielle (BHB): He skates off but he's gonna need some attention from the trainer.
8:14 Scott (BHB): Merrimack PP.
8:14 Sam (BHB): On the Mack goal, Bates threw the puck behind from beyond the BU net and found Collins who slapped it past Millan. Just a right place at the right time type of goal.
8:14 Scott (BHB): Escobedo probably lucky he only got 2.

True. I admittedly haven't seen enough other MC games to say for sure (only 2 non-BU games in the last 3 years), but I've seen every single BU game for the last 2 years and none of them have had nearly as many penalties or nearly as many post-whistle altercations as the Merrimack games.

i dont know if it was clear or not, but i was responding to irishfan's argument as specious, not yours. (if only uscho had a quote function!!)

No, I got that. I just wanted to clarify that I'm not trying to make myself out to be omniscient or anything; I'm simply stating my own observations and opinions.

FL, usually I respect your opinions, but this one is too 'Scarlet colored-glasses'. '09-'10, Gryba with 48 penalties, 118 minutes. Bigos with 40/94; Gryba's were just stupid but Bigos' were mostly dirty? C'mon. Team PM/game in '09-'10, MC led the league @ 16.7, but your angelic Terriers were right behind at 16.1 (big drop off to 3rd, with Maine @ 14.4). '08-'09, N'Eastern led HE in PM/game, but BU was second at 18.3/game, MC in 7th @ 15.1, more than 3 minutes less per game. If you go back further than 3 years (the time frame you've used) MC had much higher PM/game, but we're talking about the past 3 years.
For every Bigos, I'll raise you a Gryba, Colby Cohen or Brandon Yip (48 for 118 in '08-'09).
MC will never be confused with the SMT's in Durham, and neither will BU. MC will likely always be physical, especially given the cozy rink and the 19 & 20 year old freshman recruits from Canada. That's a game they are used to playing.
And if you think Bigos is the dirtiest player you've ever seen, you've obviously never seen North Dakota play any season. Personally, I think Brendan Walsh was one of the dirtiest players, although I'd have loved to have had him on my team.

our goons are hard, tough players. your goons are cheap hacks.

but either are preferred over sneaky, whiny, diving, dirty, midget cheap shot artists! :D

Like I said above, I've only followed HE CLOSELY for 4 years now (my 4 years at BU). Before that, I watched plenty of college hockey and went to a few games a year, but I didn't pay enough attention to individual players to be able to make a fair comparison. Gryba and Yip could certainly be dirty (I can recall at least 1 brutal hit from behind by each). Cohen did a lot of stupid after-the-whistle stuff, but I can't recall any blatant hits from behind by him- in fact, I remember noticing several times last year him pulling up even on guys who turned their backs at the last second. I would never accuse any of those 3 of being clean players, but I personally think Bigos is dirtier than all of them.

As for NoDak, I've seen 4 of their games in person (vs. BU and UMass in the Ice Breaker 2 years ago, vs. UNH in Manchester 2 years ago, and vs. Yale in Worcester last year) and didn't think they were overly dirty in any of them. I actually went in looking for dirty play because of their reputation, but all I saw was an aggressive team. Only at the end of the Yale game did I think they did anything stupid or unnecessary (the end of that game got real chippy).
