Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

And they have more beer and booze stands than food stands. Do any other colleges sell beer at their games? NCAA bans sale at the Frozen Four. Interesting that UML allows it at their games.
BU. UNH is barred by State law from doing so. :(

Wisco has a beer garden, I'm pretty sure some of the other Western programs also have beer sales.

Does Wisco still have a beer garden at their on campus rink? I know they used to at the old Dane County Coliseum which was not on campus...

Can't figure out how UML was allowed to sell beer... I know BU was (somehow) grandfathered in. There's no consistency with anything, but I'm sure there's $$$$$ involved

There is also a room you can get beers in between periods at PC games but you can't bring them into the stands.

No grandfathering or anything like that. Actually, unless it is a NCAA event (e.g., Regionals, Frozen Four etc.), whether there are alcohol sales has nothing to do with the NCAA. It is entirely dependent on state law. For example, in MA, there is no law banning the sale of alcoholic beverages at college athletics events, so alcohol sales are allowed at UML, BU, Garden for hockey east tourni... etc. However, in NH, there is a state law prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages at college athletics events, hence why UNH cannot serve booze.

How is Lawler not up to Hockey East standards?

Merrimack sells booze in the Blue Line Club. Has been for maybe 2 or 3 years. But as far as I know it cant leave that room. I tried once and got my a** chewed out by a very pleasant security guard. She rivaled Ray Lewis with her demeanor.

Merrimack has sold beer for a very long time, dating back to the days where the BLC was known as the Warrior Club and it was in the raquet ball court and then in the basketball court.

Haved you been to any other rinks, including Schneider?

I've been to a lot of other rinks. The only Hockey East rinks I havent been to are UMass and Vermont. After the renovations, how do they not meet? not only that, but what are these mystery "standards". Ive heard a lot of people talk about them and have read about them alot on here but I've never seen them. Has anyone? Is there a copy?

Wow, never knew that. I've either had season tickets or been a blue line club member since I graduated in 2002. For a while there was no beer sold in the club but they brought it back 2-3 yrs ago I thought. I never remember there always being beer up there. Even a few years ago it was only for certain games, not all of them if my memory serves me correctly (and with all the drinking in the club, it might not)

It might have stopped for a season or two, but way back to the early 90s, Labatte blues were being sold in the hoops and raquet ball courts.

There should be a law that canadian beer must be served at any hockey venue.

I'm very glad the rink has been updated. Obviously, I wish that all the things they said back in 2000 were done with lowering the ice and making it all chair back seating all the way around, etc. It is much improved and the chair back seats are nice. The thing I find funny when talking about all these standards is that every conference in all sports have some schools that for whatever reason do not bring their facilities up to par with the rest of the conference. I mean Miami was playing football games in the Orange Bowl with tons of history, but the place was falling apart. Duke plays football at the only stadium in the east coast to ever host a Rose Bowl, but it is downtrodden and terrible compared to big time BCS standards. Duke basketball has one of the best programs going, has a great home court advantage, but is there arena up to ACC standards? Ask the media that have to crawl up ladders to get to the press box. So all this talk about standards is kind of funny to me.

I'd think a rink with that name would be fit for a "King"

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Not enough seats.

The 5000 seating requirement was put in after Vermont joined.

Lawler, Gutterson, Schneider and Matthews are all short of that and are grandfathered in.

Merrimack is half the size of the next smallest school by enrollment, and has more arena seats per student than any Hockey East school, save Providence, even after the renovations.

The comments about Schneider just go to show how much attendance, atmosphere, and winning contribute to the experience of attending a game. Plenty of people were perfectly happy seeing games at Schneider, Snively, Walter Brown and even Tully Forum. Admittedly even post-renovation Lawler is only approaching the standards set by those older rinks, and all of those have been replaced (Whittemore, Agganis and Tsongas) except Schneider. However if the team was winning I think we'd see fewer complaints, and despite the small capacity there's nothing particularly bad about the experience of seeing a game at Lawler these days.

Tsongas was "on campus" because the last chancellor wanted it to be on campus... our current chancellor doesn't share that opinion... TA! DA! *dance step*
