Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Opened and dedicated on January 27, 1998, the center proudly bears the name of the late Senator Paul E. Tsongas, a Lowell native.

We are one of Massachusetts finest venues providing quality entertainment for all ages. The center is home to the NCAA Division I UMass-Lowell River Hawks hockey team.

In addition to exciting hockey action, the center hosts concerts, family shows, sporting events, tradeshows and conferences. Some of the world's biggest stars have performed here before capacity crowds. We can seat 6,500 patrons for hockey and up to 7,800 for concerts without losing the intimate feeling needed for a memorable experience.

Did anyone see the game in Matthews on Friday? Over 100 PIMs. It looked like the refs were handing out misconducts like Halloween candy. Tough to make some of the best players on each team sit for 10 minutes that late in the game.

They definitely had the whistles out especially in the first, it reminded me of the early season game at Conte (reffed by Benedetto). MC was on PK for most of the first from what I recall. But part of the issue was the matching Facemasks for the fisticuffs in the third that led to the dismissals of SDC and Heyward.

Because at the end of the day, the admin and school MUST step up and support the program and league.

The reason the program is where it is today is because of Dennehy, (AD) Hoffman and (Pres) Hopey (and his interim predecessor). There's just such a clear shift since the (ex pres) Santagati era. They've obviously wagered a lot of money on the program. It's great to see the program bearing fruit, it has brought me (a recent alum) back into the fold. Parity must be a good thing for the league, right?

% wise according to these figures UML is running around 91% and MC around 78%. That would favor Hokey's argument. However I have to question the figures considering the box score lists 6488 (note to hokey, 6488 is not 6800+) when the arena is listed as holding 4500. Bringing in 30-40 over capacity is one thing, 2000 over capacity?? Has to be a typo. Otherwise if we are to believe you can fit 6500 into Tsongas...well UML as a % falls to 63% and becomes less then MC.
I call BS.

the tsongas center seats 6496 and the 6800+ posted above was actually 6488 and i was one of them..........not to disagree, JC but MC's capacity % is way higher than Lowell if you want to compare that way http://www.collegehockeynews.com/almanac/attendance.php

Parity is great for league, no doubt

raising prices to $15.00 at 2600+/- every game over 15+ games funded the seats, not the support from anyone.
The total renovation was maybe 300-400K tops, and I doubt that high.

Life is good at MC but I don't buy the "great" support theory. What clear shift direct dollar wise are we discussing?

Lowells last 5 games

4800+
6800+
5753
3383
3547
2645
4379
3691
3733
4120

MC had 700+ seats avaiable vs U Mass saturday eve and many games betwen 2100-2400

Great fan support but lets not get carried away

Embarrasing was 300 to 350 at MC for several years not to long ago.

Lowell is dead last and has brought in twice as many year to date.

in 12 games Lowell has brought in close to 49000, Merrimack around 28000. I doubt to many lowell players or fans would swap barns. To the point, not one school in Hockey east would,

I love when people throw out stats like this but refuse to put them into proper context. Umass Lowell is a huge university in the middle of the city of Lowell. I bet you less than 5% of the UML student body actually attends games regularly. Meanwhile, on most weekend games 50% of the Merrimack student body turns out for the games. Sorry, the towns of Andover and North Andover aren't going to draw a huge non-student crowd that cities like Boston and Lowell and the entire state of New Hampshire and Maine can.

FYI the renovations cost a total of $3 million, and they may not be done... also, the Merrimack attendance figures have improved and Lowell has a much bigger venue...let's just leave it at that...

You could have the big crowds if you had better marketing and a nicer venue.

Forgive me for asking, but did Merrimack remove all of the bench seating in favor of chairbacks? I will be sitting behind the UNH bench. I look forward to seeing the renovations and another good time at the Lawler. Its a great place to watch college hockey

Yes, all of the benches are gone, and replaced with chairback seats, the road team also enters from behind their bench now as well, so you should have a good view of the Wildcats at the start of each period...

the Tsongas no longer holds a 6496+300 capacity... though I have not seen the official new number... supposedly its in the 6200 range.
