Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Yea, right. Sitting on wooden bleachers in a bandbox of a rink with a roof so low you can't flip the puck in the air, is my idea of a great venue. Have you been to any other rinks?

That roof should be caving in any minute now.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

NU has certainly picked it up since the beginning of the year. 6-2-2 in their last 10 and Rawlings has pitched 3 shutouts in that span. So far a split of 2-1 games, and I'd expect something similar here. 2 of the top goalies in the league. Huskies only 2 points bback although Warriors have 2 games in hand.

Actually how has NU "picked it up". By winning games against the worst teams in HE? Other than a win against MC in early Dec. and a tie of ME, I don't see they have done much lately. You have to look at who a team has played.

Unlike most years, HE has little parity this year. Top four teams are very good. The bottom four teams are awful. By the end of the season (NU has six games with the top three teams), NU and ME could be in the awful category too. Maybe things will turn around but NU will be lucky to pick up more than two points against UML the rest of the season.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Thanks Brian! Our highest finish is 5th place in 1996-97 under Ron Anderson. That year we also got home ice because Maine was declared ineligible for the playoffs, moving all teams up one spot. We took on BC and lost both games 7-6 and 5-3.

The next year in 1997-98 we made the Garden (aka FleetCenter) for the first time after upsetting #1 BU 4-1 and 5-4 in the QFs.

Of course I remember 97-98. Not sure which was a more disastrous post-season: '97-98 BU or '10-11 Patriots!?!

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Speaking of Ron Anderson, wasn't he forced out? If not, I believe everyone knew that '97-'98 season was his last. I'll always remember the way he celebrated with his players after beating BU in game three.

this is old and stale and not even accurate anymore:rolleyes:

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Uhhh 07-08 Patriots take the cake in my book

Yeah, it's very hard to top the epic fail that was the end of that season. 10-11 Patriots did not have much going for them in the beginning so expectations weren't that high. It was a pleasant surprise to see them go that far. They probably should have been able to get further. The Jets game was horrible but not Super Bowl losing and going 18-1 horrible.

Its hilarious that college hockey fans continue to engage in pointless debates about team facilities. Regardless, Merrimack's small home ice obviously gives them a huge advantage considering they have lost only like 5 home games in the past 1 1/2 seasons. And that is all that really matters.

Dude, I realize you are defending your turf, but the truth is that Volpe was a dump for a lot of years. One game about 10-12 years ago, they burned the pizza out in the lobby and the whole arena filled with smoke. That said, it's a great place to watch hockey because of the size of the place. I trust it's much better now after the renovations, I haven't been yet.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

As a Merrimack fan, I love being able to be right on top of the action. We now have a nice blue line club with as easy access to the arena as any blue line club in the league. The seats are a lot better and the ice is better. It would obviously cost a lot of money, but I think further improvements need to be made to the lobby and if at all possible raising the roof or lowering the ice. Merrimack is a small school that does not need more seats than 2500. Yes, UNH, BU, BC and Maine might be able to bring more fans out, but for the most part 2500 is great. Makes the seats more in demand. It's very embarrassing for college hockey to see games on TV from UML and Northeastern with the place more than half empty as has occured several times over the years.

MC had 700+ seats avaiable vs U Mass saturday eve and many games betwen 2100-2400

Great fan support but lets not get carried away

Embarrasing was 300 to 350 at MC for several years not to long ago.

Lowell is dead last and has brought in twice as many year to date.

in 12 games Lowell has brought in close to 49000, Merrimack around 28000. I doubt to many lowell players or fans would swap barns. To the point, not one school in Hockey east would,

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Hokydope,
My point wasn't to criticize UML. I actually know their marketing guy and like him a lot, but there have been many years where they have had awful crowds with tons of empty seats. This is not to attack UML, but it is to suggest that Merrimack has very few alums and a smaller student body than any other school in HEA so if the arena was any bigger than 2500, it would look terribly empty for most games besides against the big four.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

And now, on a more positive note....
Another 4 point weekend. Nice comeback against NU, tough team and a tough place to play. I thought they'd beat UMass, but by 9 goals? Powerplay has been excellent, and Cucci and Barton are on fire.
On to UNH next weekend for a home & home.Caught UNH vs. ME Sat. night on NESN. Great game, and Thompson is having a sensational season. Should be a good couple of games.

This is completely disingenuous in that Tsongas is much bigger. However, a % capacity of fans would still probably favor UML. Not sure though.

With our record this year... why are we having this conversation?

Again, I was only trying to point out that Merrimack does not need a huge facility as there is a smaller student body and alumni than at any of the other Hockey East institutions. That is a fact. 2500 is the perfect size. There have been times where I was at Tsongas or watching a UML game on television where it was just awful to see so many empty seats. I'm not saying Merrimack has better percentage capacity or worse or that trying to be negative towards UML. Simply pointing out Merrimack doesn't need a large facility and with the upgrades, the facility is much better than it has been. There are chair back seats, the visitors do not have to walk through the crowd, the blue line club is nice and accessible and the ceiling is more aesthetically pleasing than before and slightly higher.

As I commented above, if I was in charge, my list of priorities for future renovations would be a raised ceiling or lowered ice surface so that the pucks didn't so frequently come in contact with the ceiling and an improved/expanded lobby.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Agreed
My only point was simple.
many, many, many more times where MC was % way more empty than Lowell or Northeastern. Especially in the past. MC has been doing well attendance wise now that they are winning. Lowell is still bringing in very good numbers even when they are brutal. MC can't say that....

Everything else you say is dead on.

It is perfect size for them but would be nice to build a new rink. Similar to Bentley, it is not a "league" rink.

Others are spending 60-85 million and MC pumps in 300 -400 K?????

Without a womens program, I would guess the next down cycle you might see a push towards U Conn etc.

Because at the end of the day, the admin and school MUST step up and support the program and league.

in 12 games Lowell has brought in close to 49000, Merrimack around 28000. ,

% wise according to these figures UML is running around 91% and MC around 78%. That would favor Hokey's argument. However I have to question the figures considering the box score lists 6488 (note to hokey, 6488 is not 6800+) when the arena is listed as holding 4500. Bringing in 30-40 over capacity is one thing, 2000 over capacity?? Has to be a typo. Otherwise if we are to believe you can fit 6500 into Tsongas...well UML as a % falls to 63% and becomes less then MC.
I call BS.
