Mascots

Re: Mascots

You guys are getting smarter. Last season when Air Force and RIT shared, the only Falcon allowed to touch the regular-season trophy was the trainer.

I don't go in for superstition, myself, although it was obvious the Tigers were avoiding touching the trophy. But come on, didn't Sidney Crosby kill that theory last season when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup?

Re: Mascots

A real bear cub wandered onto the football field in the 1920's. The crowd went "Bananas" for it.

Saying they "wandered" sounds like it just appeared out of the woods. If I'm not mistaken (I have the printed history at home) it was a live bear cub, however, it was lead out onto the field by someone. IIRC, it was a rescued cub being cared for by someone.

But essentially, yes, that's how we got the name Bananas.

I must admit, had a real bear charged the field, that would have been much more exciting!

EDIT: I stand slightly corrected...the bear wasn't rescued but rather "stolen" in true college fashion. History is here.

Re: Mascots

What happened to Rucus or whatever his name was, that silly monkey looking thing from the NCAAs?

Complicated question.

Ruckus the Red Tailed Hawk is still Denver's official mascot, but he's very rarely seen anymore.

Denver Boone was Denver's mascot from 1968 to 1999 and was designed by Disney, but he was put out to pasture 10 years ago for a number of reasons.

Last year, when DU's chancellor denied a student movement to restore Boone as offical mascot for "diversity" reasons (a few Native Americas on campus were upset and there was a media firestorm over the move ), the chancellor did leave the door open for students and alumni to "do what they wish with Boone". So Alumni and students created their own Boone mascot and funded his creation privately, and even sent a student to mascot camp on their own nickel so the Boone character would operate well. The Unnofficial Boone was created just before last years Frozen Four, and his been a hit around campus this year. He's the one in the picture earlier in this thread.
