Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

Re: Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

I dunno though... if you're going to put every shoplifter and pot dealer on a terrorist watch list, you're going to have to watch an awful lot of people.

(Yes, I know that that's not what's being suggested, but if the conclusion people are coming to is "we should've known because of this other stuff" then I think there's an awful lot of hindsight reasoning being employed.)

But it does make you wonder why they publish the info...to your point, if every shop-lifter or pot head was a terrorist, my high school class would be ruling the world by now. People speed every day, I don't think that pattern leads to terrorism..

This is like reefer-madness...don't eat your vegetables and you'll grow up to be a terrorist. And if you keep touching that thing you'll be in real trouble!!

Re: Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

Investigators have found female DNA on at least one of the bombs used in the Boston Marathon attacks, though they haven't determined whose DNA it is or whether that means a woman helped the two suspects carry out the attacks, according to U.S. officials briefed on the probe.

The officials familiar with the case cautioned that there could be multiple explanations for why the DNA of someone other than the two bombing suspects—Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his younger brother, Dzhokhar—could have been found on remnants of the exploded devices. The genetic material could have come, for example, from a store clerk who handled materials used in the bombs or a stray hair that ended up in the bomb.

Not that I feel sorry for that family in any sort of way, but that story reminds me more of that Mike Birbiglia joke about the New Jersey traffic stop, where the cop says, "Hey, you look poor. Pull over and we'll figure out what laws you've broken."

Exactly.

Re: Marathon Killers Apprehended: the Aftermath

They took a DNA sample from the dead guy's widow... Of course they have to cover their bases. And even if it is hers, it doesn't mean she even knew what was going on.
In fact it could be something as nefarious as cooking a pot roast.

Could even be the poor schmuck at Target that put the pressure cooker on the shelf or rang it up at the checkout.

They come in boxes. If it's not his wife for actually using it to, you know, cook with...it's most likely some Boston area woman who opened the box and took it out to make sure everything was there...then set it down and grabbed an unopen one.

Or a factory worker in China who was making $1.20/day to pack the boxes.

BOSTON (AP) — Boston police say three more suspects have been taken into custody in the marathon bombings.

In a tweet Wednesday morning, the police department says only that three more suspects are in custody and more details will follow. Police spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca confirmed the tweet but referred all other questions to the FBI.

Not shocked that they had help
It seems that these three didn't know about the bombing beforehand, but helped after the fact. Apparently they tried to take evidence out of the room after slime 2 was already in custody. Purely speculation on my part, but it could be as simple as they wanted to "get a piece of history" and tried to rob his room. Or it could be that they knew the police would be there and tried to cover up evidence. We don't know yet, but early accounts are that they did not provide help BEFORE the bombing...which means if they did have help, those people are still out there.

I'm not prepared to give anyone involved in this outrage (no matter how peripherally) the benefit of the doubt. Why are you? "Get a piece of history?" An application of Occam's razor here is appropriate. The fact that two of them are from the same part of the world and share the same religion with a mass killer is a mere coincidence? Too bad they couldn't have been in Boston. There were some terrific souvenirs there, too.

I said it could be that they wanted a souvenir OR that they knew the police were coming and they tried to cover up evidence. I'm not giving any benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, "souvenir" hunting in the wake of a mass killing, coincidentally coming immediately after the FBI has named one of your friends as a prime suspect, is logical. These were college students, who certainly had to be aware of the world wide reporting on this incident, and to even suggest that they might have acted innocently here is, in fact, giving them the benefit of the doubt. They don't deserve it.
