Maine - the Golfing Season

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

We can ask how Maine was outplayed in the last 40 minutes . . . or we could ask how UMD was outplayed in the first 20.

Occam's razor says the 2nd question is the right one.

Unfortunately for Maine, they drew a 1 seed disguised as a 2 seed in the first round. I have no idea how UMD coughed up a hairball against <s>Tech</s> Mankato. If UMD played to their potential in the WCHA tournament, there's no way they slip to 7th overall.

UMD was just better than Maine. I don't think it's conditioning. I don't think it was in-game coaching. I don't think Maine players lacked heart. I think UMD is just better. They were able to wear Maine out physically (skating and hitting) in a way that no other team in Hockey East has done.

As long as UMD was disorganized, Maine was able to look pretty good against them. When UMD got their **** together, though, it was curtains. Maybe if Maine had gotten luckier with a bounce here or there, and Mangene scores on 2 of his grade As, rather than just 1, and Maine jumps out to a bigger lead, maybe UMD isn't able to regain their composure. Maybe.

But the "maybe if" game goes both ways. Why did UMD come out so flat to begin with?

The Bulldogs are just better. Good luck against BC. That should be a *great* game.

I posted this in the other thread, but I think Maine was pretty gassed. It looked like the five games in two weeks plus the two long trips really took a toll on them. UMD has only played three games over the last couple of weeks............./QUOTE]

In my opinion they were not gassed. The team has played an entire season of hockey and I think they were physically fit. In my opinion UMD was the better team. There are times when you give the other team credit because they played better. A good many Maine posters find that hard to do.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Back from Woostah...pretty disgusting in many ways. I keep coming back to Maines D ...they continue to be brutally inept and soft at times. Poor descisions, turnovers, and on and on. I knew UMD was a good team from seeing them live at Minneapolis last year. Not only are they tough physcially but they can skate too. They have all the tools. More than anything, they imposed their will on Maine and the Timmay Bears just wilted under the pressure. This aint the Blacks Bears that fought tooth and nail till the end under Walshy. They compete well until the going the gets tough, then they stop competing as hard as they need to. Its discouraging for those of us who have known and seen better over the years, but its what we are now stuck with. Until Whitehead leaves the program, we will only occasionally get a sniff and thats all ....I am convinced of that. He just cannot motivate either externally or internally his kids. And I am now convinced that Corkum isnt all that good at it either.

Other thoughts. .....tv timeouts ruin the game...absolutley ruin it. Goal reviews do the same. Its awful.

Got a chance to meet and have a long conversation with Cal Ingrahams dad at a bar. Cals out in Idaho now selling insurance or some such thing. He had another son who played at Air Force, so he had an AF hat and a Maine hat that he was going to wear.....nice guy. I told him there was a bunch of us fans who wished that Montgomery would come back and take over the program. His words were "I agree...he would probably do a better job than Corkum". Seemed like odd words at the time but in retrospect maybe not.

Hopefully in 2 years they dont renew Whiteheads contract.....hopefully. Its time for a change unless the masses are happy with status quo. We can do better

Oh...forgot to mention perhaps the most disgusting thing...a pizz poor coaching decision.

Maine goes on the PP with 3 minutes left....down 2 goals and they're getting no looks....

Sullivan stays in net.....OMFG.

Disagree with you 100% on that one. You certainly wouldn't be saying that if UMD got a ENG right off the faceoff with 3 mins left in the game.

I think they should have left Sullivan in for the duration of the PP to give Maine more confidence with the puck since they wouldnt constantly have to worry about protecting an empty net.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Geeeezus, Maine was down 2, getting nothing and you dont want to take any chances?? Holy chit. Good coaches make brave decisions when required. BTW, if I remember correctly Maine even had the faceoff in their end. When you are down 2 and getting nothing with only 3 minutes left.....its obvious.

Timmay had nightmares of Denver in Boston. ;)

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

I think you keep Anthoine with Mangene and swap Higgins and Beattie.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Wait till next year, an all too familiar theme for Maine hockey. Hope the recruiting class is as good as Drew thinks it will be. Hope a goalie coach shows up also
With the exception of 1993 and 1999, it's always been "wait until next year." Let's not pretend that Maine won the title every season...

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Nothing beats Kebo Valley on a late summer night!!

Hey Mookie would not be dancing on our grave until your BC boys are actually dancin' if you know what I mean. After all "The Country Club" will be open next week.:D

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Mookie's such a huge BC fan, he's scouting their next opponent out in St Paul ;)

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Just returned home for Mass. I have to say, although it wasnt the outcome I was looking for last night it was a great experience! I have seen a ton of regular season and hockey east playoff games but that was my first NCAA tourney game. Maine played a great first period and a decent first 8 minutes of the second but after that the wheels came off the wagon! I think the big turning point was the fluky goal and then the one just over a minute later...game was over after that! Maine had NO answer for the trap Duluth put on at center ice! Hats off to Duluth, they were the better team! Better season for ME than I expected so I guess that is something! I had a great time in Worcester and the atmosphere was decent as well and even met a few new faces at Maxwells! Oh well guess its time for Bruins and lobsterfishing.....see you all in the fall!

Not bad but I think I would put Mangene on the top line...he will be ME's best player! Joey will get his goals but Mangene is the overall best player on the team next season!

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

So Kerluke isn't going anywhere, because the recruiting is looking up. And Corkum isn't going anywhere because of the team's improved play. But we need a goalie coach.

Unfortunately 1+1+1 doesn't = 2.

Are there any candidates to replace Alexander? Nothing against the guy. He might be good at his job, given full-time contact. Working remotely doesn't seem to be cutting it.

Need any more fuel for the goaltending fire? Each of the four teams in the FF this year are in the top 8 in team defense. Union and BC are 1 and 2. Maine is 31.

Maine's defense is ahhhhhhhhhh........pourous to say the least. No need to single out names, but poor decisions, poor management of the puck, slow and telegraphed passes, and a lack of physical and mental toughness. Not many good things I can say. They need a shutdown defenseman and a puck moving guy.
