Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Who knows whats in Leaman contract but coaches move all the time, especially in Mens BBall, I'll bet leaman can get out of his with few issues

they generally don't move within conferences.

who was the last college coach to resign and move to another team? was it leaman from union to pc? ezac to hea?

Why do you keep talking like the last time an inerm coach was hired it didn't work out.
5 or 6 kick a** years out of the gate. Maybe stayed to long but if Cormhm did what TW did first 5 years they would be pumped

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

If you are going to throw ex players names out there, why is not Weino mentioned? Why is not Peter Metcalf mentioned. Chit for that matter what in hell is Paul Kariya doing, is he not interested in coaching or has he had it with UMaine? I have no question Jim, not Jon, Tortorella would be interested. Red Gendron...an assistant interested in yet another NC ? I have to believe Nate Leaman has a lot more interest than a 'no comment'. Rick Bennett knows full well how electric the Alfond will get with good hockey played within it. There are countless possiblities, but what is the best, and how will they be measured against the one that got away?

Problem might be there is such a long list of candidates that most will drop out knowing full well they dont have much of a chance.

That's why I said "etc." :p

I'll let one of the Internutcases explain why TW's first years were such a success and why he dropped so quickly after 2007.

Yep.

If Corkum steps right in and maintains the program's current level of performance for the next 6 years, look out. :p

That's "interim". Whitehead was interim for about 5 minutes before they gave it to him outright.

Whitehead benefitted 150% from the Walsh halo effect. It lasted for years. The momentum was "downhill freight train". Maine recruiting at that time was among the best in college hockey. When Walsh passed away, the deck was loaded. Look it up. Freshmen and Sophomores who would be there for for 3 and 4 more years. Are you kidding me? And because of those kids, more great kids kept coming. Maine Hockey was a hot program. A chimpanzee could have had a winning record in '01, '02, '03, '04, '05.
Then Whitehead was left to his own devices, particularly after giving Standbrook a size 11 in the a55, and the record speaks for itself. He ran a program of major National prominence into the ground. But that's done, over, history. :D:) Let's move forward.

Most D1 head coaching jobs I've seen in any sport require a bachelors with a master's preferred. I think most head coaches at this level have a master's degree. Paul has neither, and I'm sure he is enjoying retirement with his millions (I hear he is an avid surfer)

Pretty sure you have to have a bachelors degree to be HC in Hockey East.

Isn't it up to the school?. What Head coach in HE doesn't have a Masters?

Sheesh, why is it that it matters. We should never have let Whitehead go if that is what matters.

Do people really think having a masters matters. If so I'll throw myself into the mix.

I have an idea that might stick... Corkum to head coach, Metcalf as assistant, Standbrook as top assistant for a couple years.

Goalie coach covered. Defensive coach covered. Forward coach covered.

Standbrook instills recruiting knowledge for the other two... couple years away from success... and then life is good.

Hmmm.... on to something? I know I am an idiot. But think about the on and off ice leadership, combined with a restoration of Maine hockey, combined with good leadership for recruiting.

This is hopeful, but guaranteed it won't happen. :(

Dont wanna pizz on this too bad but why would Metcalf, probably doing well in Portland in the financial services business, want to trek to Orono for a cut in pay to be an assistant, after pretty much conceding no interest by being on the selection committee. Nice try, but I cant picture it happening. BTW, where is Standbrook now....last I heard he was spending some time in Florida but is he maintaining any sort of residence up Bangor way?

Re: Metcalf - probably beacuse if he gets compensated fairly well he can hire a manger that can fill in / undertake. And with a promise of someday making a decent living as a coach. This guy has a lot of pride and knows how to play and how to caoch. And more importantly how to win.

Re: Standbrook - beacause he probably gave more to Maine hockey then anyone else did. And probably would love nothing more than a chance to make it better. Here is a guy that built this program and let everyone else take the spotlight. He didn't work that hard to let it go this way. Maybe he says no. But if I am on the committee I would think about bringing Grant back in. BTW... Jimmy had Grant as an assistant elsewhere. Don't think that wasn't an accident. I would be stupid to think for two minutes Grant couldn't improve this program. I think it would be a VERY welcome back from the fans. And a very mature presence for the "new" coaching staff would be good. Like I said before, Grant is your goalie coach. Peter your defensive coach. Corkum your forward coach.

My $0.02...

I am a dreamer and can be called as much, but... it would be right... wouldn't it?

:)

Well if that can't work, I think Cavanuagh of BC would be our best choice. He has a proven track record of recruiting and can recruit the right style of player that this team needs. Hate to look at BC for answers but...

Big NHL types that are sprinkled in few and far between with fluff won't work... small speedy Joey Diamond types in over abundance is a record for success... sprinkle in some NHL frames on that foundation.

Hate to say it... but it is BC's way of doing things.

I guess he's another wildcard. Question for BC fans lurking: is Brown basically the successor in waiting for York's job? If he is, then maybe Cav could be lured away? I'm sure he's loyal . . . to York. But if he wants to run his own program someday and it isn't in the cards at BC, maybe someone can/will lure him away?
