Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Actually Amestoy and Higgins were also part of the "grand experiment" all committed around the same time and all were 15/16. We'll see after the Q draft this year with Ashley if he's coming or not it was a good sign last year that he wasn't drafted when he was ranked in the top 25 for the draft.

I'm not saying that Ashley, or Amestoy, or Higgins, will be this guy, but let's say that out of 6 commitments of 15 year olds, Maine ends up enrolling one stud and two role players. That's not the worst thing in the world. These guys going to the OHL was a known risk. And its not like scholarships are going unused- Maine is still getting the kids it would have gotten without the offers to Ashley/Amestoy/Higgins/whoever.

Worst case scenario? Maine gets a few overaged Canadians/EJHL kids that are the "bread and butter" recruits anyways. Best case? Maine gets a high ceiling player. I don't see the need for the hand wringing from the chattering classes.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Hey, could someone with access post that article on Amestoy. I was very curious to read it. The little bit non-members could read described him as Maine's 'top recruit' for next year...which I found interesting...I want to know what that prognosis is based on, especially with Anthoine having comparatively more success in a tougher league.

Ashley was eligible for last year’s draft but wasn’t picked because he said he was committed to the University of Maine. He apparently softened his stance over the past few months and appears open to the idea of playing for a Maritime team. He played for the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League last year, posting 26 goals and 41 assists in 46 games. He did not attend the draft but it looks likely he will report.

"We’ve had meetings and discussions with him and he’s expressed interest in playing for us," Russell said. "Now we go to work on the guy. He’s the type of player who can come in at 17 years old and contribute right away. He played junior hockey last year at 16 and put up 67 points. He’s a right-handed shot and a skill player, which is what we’re looking for."

I'm shocked that Ashley is changing his mind:D

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I haven't been able get in contact with Ashley yet, but like most of you said, a team wouldn't waste a 2nd rounder to a player that won't show up.

Teams have been known to take chances with first round players, let alone those in the 2nd round. The problem here is not what round Ashley was drafted in but by what team drafted him. Halifax is a wealthy organization run and owned by former NHL players who can and do have a lot of pull in "helping" prospects decide where to play.

Sorry to say but Ashley is gone.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

And that will complete the run of the FAILED recruiting of 15 year olds.......BC and Michigan can do that.......Maine can't. Thankfully, it looks like Maine is getting more realistic with their recruiting and getting back to their roots. Don't know if it was Grant or Guy's idea to recruit all of those kids that signed with Juniors.......but it was a BAD decision and a total WASTE of time and recruiting resources!!!

Surely there would never be any under-the-table incentives thrown Ashley's way. That would be against CHL rules!

It had to be Timmay's idea. Grant and Guy walk on water.

Very few incentives would be needed other than a fully paid educational package to a school of his choice. Very difficult for Maine or any other NCAA team to combat that.

Why? The quality of education in America at the collegiate level is often much better than CIS schools. There are some good schools in the CIS, but you're really arguing the level of education is comparable overall?

Not to a Canadian. Are you going to say that a degree from the University of Maine or even New Hampshire for that matter would be worth more to Ashley than a degree from St Francis Xavier??? Unlikely.

Its the chance you take when going after high profile Canadian recruits....there is a reason that less and less of even the big name schools are doing so.

Yeah, because they'd actually have to pay for the education they promise. In the CHL, they only have to pay for it one out of every three times, and I'm willing to bet that number is way less for the kids that actually have other options and need persuading.

Ashley is tiny, so maybe he'll be ready to quit playing real hockey at age 20, but odds are pretty good he'll want to at least give pro hockey a shot and never sees a dime of any promised education money.

He could play pro for up to a year and still receive his education money. You are right, he is tiny so my bet is that he ends up in the CIS after a year of trying to play the pro game.
