Stuart Higgins http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/playerpage.html?playerid=3200393&seasonid=4429
Mark Anthoine http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/playerpage.html?playerid=1408603&seasonid=4429

and in another note it seems that Jon Gillies a 6'5" goalie from South Portland who is a freshman for Salisbury Prep is one of 5 goalies competing for a sport on next years NTDP. http://theworldofjuniorhockey.blogspot.com/2010/03/ntdp-tryout-roster.html

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

After being at the game last night it is hard to not be excited about next year. Obviously one the biggest concerns is the goaltenders, with Darling status unknown and Sirman not seemingly ready to carry the team I cruised around the leagues for available goalies. The kid I found to be most intriguing was Jeff Teglia http://ushl.stats.pointstreak.com/playerpage.html?playerid=2288313&seasonid=4429.

Further google stalking found that his dream school is Notre Dame, http://collegehockey247.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1051483.

Does anyone know if we can entice this kid with a immediate chance to lead a team that has a decent chance at some success.
Teglia committed to UMass today so scratch him off the list.

I wonder if Jon Gillies is related to UNH goalie Bruce Gillies? He played at UNH when I was at Maine ('82-'83). If that is the case I would think the Wildcats might have the inside track.

Though we might hear the cries of not recruiting in our back yard from a few. Long way away as a freshman. It will be interesting if Maine invests in another 'tender. Tough call not knowing the inside scoop, but seemingly you have one you are not confident with his on ice play, and one who has issues off the ice. However we saw how one goalie played when finally given the chance and for 4 of the 5 games he did demonstrated he could play at the top level.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

It appears he is,

"Rats, Jr. Bruins Prevail in Mass Regionals
In the U16 championship game today, the Neponset Valley River Rats topped the Valley Warriors, 6-3. The Rats’ 6’4”, 190 lb. ’94 goaltender Jon Gillies had 45 saves, 21 of which came in the third period. Gillies, a repeat freshman at the Salisbury School, is the son of former UNH goaltender Bruce Gillies, who many of you may remember from the early ‘80s. " http://ushr.com/news/20091101

It will be interesting

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I don't have any real insight, I think Summerhays would be a good fit, based on his stats. He has had excellent stats for the last 2 years, I preferred Teglia since he had seen more shots and had a better % but they both seem like top end prospects.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Speaking of Summerhays, he got ejected for getting in a fight at the end of OT.

EDIT: Turns out this was the third time Summerhays and Pisellini have fought each other.

Swavely, Amestoy and Anthoine are joining the team this coming year. Now that Maine is actively looking for a goal tender, I wonder if Higgins will no longer be coming to Orono this Fall. His performance hasn't been very good and Whitehead may need the scholarship for a goal tender.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I think I heard somewhere that corkum's kid has been cleared to play and will join the team this fall. could be wrong though and i dont know anything about how good he is anyway

Kelen Corkum has been cleared to work out. There is a very good chance he will be playing for Maine this Fall. He's an exceptional player but hasn't played for over a year due to post concussion syndrome.

When you talk about whethar a scholarship is available--in fact, when you hear stories that so-and-so was awarded a full scholarship to UMaine (or presumably any other school), please remember that NCAA rules allow a total of 18 scholarships, and Division I hockey programs typically include 25-27 players. Some schools may offer 18 full scholarships and ask the other team members to pay their own way, at least until they get high enough on the pecking order to claim a full scholarship. From my understanding, Maine has awarded very few full scholarships, preferring instead to parcel out the scholarship funds on a case-by-case basis. Obviously, Whitehead has make his decision with a variety of factors in mind, including (a) supply and demand--a grade A blue-chipper will command more scholarship dollars that a less desirable recruit; and (b) past commitments--I assume that a D-I hockey coach has to honor previous commitments; otherwise the word would get around that a scholarship "commitment" can't be relied on. But the bottom line is that Whitehead can't offer full scholarships to 27 players, so he has to figure out the best way to allocate the dollars that would support 18 full scholarships among the players that he most wants to recruit.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I'll be thrilled if he is half as good as his dad

dont hold your breath. not being negative, but it will be tough to play for his father and his father has tried to coach eveywhere he goes. NH Monarchs, Exeter and now he shows up at Maine? He is not a top 3 line type guy but will be forced into that role. it will not work out for maine

Hokydad is going to pounce on that

Nothing to pounce on.. They will honor them but, what does honor mean?

They will sign a kid up for 2011 and then pull him in and say he is not ready and they want you to do more time in juniors, like BC did to a kid recently. Kid will balk and then walk. Or they will pull a kid in and say, you will be in the stands all year but you can keep your money, hoping they leave.

Has Maine always allocated scholarships this way?

Thanks for the info.

Really? First line's all set, Flynn-House-Nyquist. Second line's all set, Abbott-Dee-Diamond. So at best Corkum's going to be a third line player...I don't think that's forcing him to do anything. He's not being asked to carry the team. They'll bring him along slowly and rightly so. I see no reason he'd be rushed or have too much expected of him. The only reason it won't work out is health.
