Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Umm, I'm pretty sure MSL only went to Europe during the strike.

Correct. Split time in 97-98 between the IHL and AHL. In 98-99 he played primarily in the AHL but did play a dozen or so games with Calgary. 99-00 was essentially the reverse of 98-99. After the 99-00 season he moved to Tampa Bay and hasn't been in the AHL since. During the strike season, he played 23 games in Switzerland.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

and a guy like Martin St. Louis went undrafted, and had to go to Europe to prove that he's an elite player.

i get the point you are trying to make, but this statement is just flat out wrong. MSL had the following stats before going to Europe:

IHL 16-34-50 with 24 PIMs in 56 games
AHL 58-56-114 with 64 PIMs in 95 games and then 9-19-28 with 18 PIMs in 27 playoff games
NHL 109-150-259 with 120 PIMs in 364 games and then 16-20-36 with 14 PIMs in 34 playoff games... and 1 Stanley Cup

After his time in switzerland his NHL numbers through present are:
142-189-331 with 114 PIMs in 377 GP and then 7-5-12 with 10 PIMs in 11 playoff games

While his production did improve after the season he spent in Switzerland, I wouldn't go so far as to say he proved himself there. Reason being, he only played 23 games while over there. And he's only had one season since the lockout where he has put up more points than the season immediately prior to the lockout. He also won the Art Ross, Hart, Lester B. Pearson Awards and had the best plus-minus in the league the season before going to Switzerland.

I was wrong about the Europe thing,sorry...But he did go undrafted, and was later released by Calgary, despite putting up good numbers in the minors.

Meaningless details aside,my point was that little guys with skills can play anywhere these days, even at Maine.;)

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I'd like to see us land Brandon Saad. Probably no chance at all though.

Chase Balisy would be a plus too, but he's only 5'10" 170 lbs.

In an interview some time ago Dean Blaise, while at No. Dakota, was asked if he expected the NHL would draft some of his smaller players? He replied, "I don't recruit players to play in the NHL." But he did go onto several Frozen Fours and national championships with them.

Sounds like a great coach. How come he's not coaching at Maine?

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I talked to Rutt...he's excited. Tremblay says he's learning everyday of the adjustments from HS Hockey to juniors.

Hopefully I am going to talk to Brian Harris tonight

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Sounds like the kid has a big "up-side",who knows?Nice to have a motivated Mainer on board,in any case.I bet he's not going to de-commit...

All of Corkum's recruits have shown promise so far. He's kinda like our new Grant, digging up the rough diamonds.Maine would be nowhere right now without his kids, the way our recruiting was going prior to his arrival.

He has added some players that come to play....not the so called elite types, but hard working and Team players...good work...lets hope they add a goaltender to the mix...need depth in all areas....as we know one injury away from a good season to a season of what could have been...

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Hokydad - Merrimack and UMass still need goalies for next year, heard anything?

UMass-Lowell recruited Carr for next year, Providence has Beaudry, Maine has Sirman. All from junior teams that play in usual ECAC recruiting areas. Vienneau also was being recruited by UMass?

Will Maine wait 'til 2011 to replace McNeely?

Your right...I asked Tremblay why Maine has a pipeline to his teams. He says Maine isn't just recruiting from the Monarchs to say they got another Monarch. They are recruiting these players because they are going to be a DI player.

Massie at Lowell will be fine. Merrimack should be looking at Marotta, a BCH grad and is available. Dennehy has the in over there as well. Was playing SSK ej team and just went to USHL to play with Indiana Ice.

Some of the EJ kids are getting over looked, could have played in USHL but wanted to stay home. They all let the Wagner kid from Kings slip through their fingers, he is heading to Colgate. A 91 leading EJ in scoring by a good margin. Is better then any recruit Maine has by a mile, outside maybe Anthoine. Maine could have had him if they expressed interest. laughable to see some of the recuits they took and didnt go after him.

In fariness, of course he is going to say that. Corkum has an in there as well and has a relationship with Monarchs. main should get its rear end out in the USHL and forget the Monarchs, 100% of their success in the past with kids out of region. They are not going to Frozen Four with Monarch players....

I think Massie will be #3 behind Boulanger and Carr...we'll see next fall when all three battle it out for the starter's job.

Tks Hokydad.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. That's a very bold statement. I understand that it's your opinion and your entitled to it.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

That's a very bold statement.

Are you serious? It's tough to argue with. We're talking about EJHL kids. And how many of them are superstars in their own league? It's not even close to the USHL. They need to work the other areas like US program, Canada, and USHL (and maybe even Europe as we've seen with Nyquist). And that's what he's saying.

I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers here, but his statement is closer to fact than opinion. I mean, simply put, you can't take the entire team from the EJHL and expect to be taking runs into the Frozen Four (although with Maine's history of easy regional brackets I guess anything is possible... but certainly Maine won't be a top national program loading up on EJHL kids).

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Here's a list of NH Jr. Monarchs that have been to the Frozen Four:

Derek Damon, Maine: 2004, 2006
Joe Pearce, Boston College: 2004, 2006
Joe Adams, Boston College: 2006, 2007, 2008
Matt Duffy, Maine: 2006, 2007
Chris Higgins, Boston University: 2009
Lance Herrington, Vermont: 2009
Andrew Thomas, Denver: 2005

Can you get to the Frozen Four with three lines and two pairs of Monarchs? No. But to make a blanket statement about not recruiting them...foolish. Based on what we've seen from Nemec and Flynn there's no reason to think that good players from this program won't be valuable additions to the team.

Come on...geez...nobody said you win with just a certain player from a certain area....you match up with as best of a player as you can get....right now you have to say that several of the Jr. Monarchs will make a good foundation to what Maine is putting together....never make it...come on....there's magic everwhere's...put the right team/players together and IF you get the right Coaching and some puck luck....well anything can happen.....but don't say never or can't....you never know in the game of Hockey....thats why they play it on the ice and not on the key-boards......
