Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Congrats..

I don't know how you grow up a member of Advantage, they have only been around a few years.

Maine has got to stop offering supposed 4/4 scholorships to Advantage players. I get teh Lovell connection but do not see it as a recipe for any type of success.

What a joke. Seems like a panic mode on the Maine recruiting front offering 4/4 on a long shot. Looks good on paper though.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Who cares how tall they are? Can they skate and can they play? I don't know, I haven't seen them. Have you? Can't tell by looking at the stats either.

Scotty Bowman said it best

"Size does not matter, because if you don't have it, it does not matter"

You can't and will not win in Hockey East by getting kids of local midget teams, giving them 4/4's and their is not one of the 5 over 5'8", 3 of which are 5'7" or smaller.

I have seen them play and I know they are good players and good kids. The key is the pipeline for one of the top hockey programs in the country over the last 15-20 years, is in shambles.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Regardless of how this season shapes up, it sure seems as though the damage done to the reputation of Whitehead has devastated our recruiting to the extent that we are no longer landing/keeping "top-shelf" talent. Regardless of sport, the key to maintaining an elite college program is recruiting.

This was the cornerstone of the program for 15-20 years. However, Whiteheads reputation has been damaged to the point that no matter what he does during this season or next, it seems his reputation has been forever tarnished in the recruiting/hockey circles and seems to be beyond repair regardless of in-season performance. Unlike professional sports great programs do not disappear overnight, they slowly erode. In my opinion the recent trend in the recruiting suggests this to be the case. Given this, love him or hate him, for the good of the program there has to be some serious changes and it starts with the face of the program, Mr. Whitehead himself.

Gustav Nyquist definitely isn't top shelf talent:rolleyes:

I don't want any Cal Ingraham's, Nathan Gerbe's or Adam Shemansky's on my team.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Maine finally stems the tide of losing in-state recruits........they get a 2011 verbal from Jacob Rutt of Scarborough via the NH Junior Monarchs (thanks Corkum!). Seems like he's got some offense to his game (9 & 9 in 29 GP).......nice size too!

No kidding. Give me a Giunta over a Boyle anyday. Give me that once in a program every twenty+ years type player.

Thank God maine has found 5 of them!!!!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

6'2", 195 lb. New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs (EJHL) left-shot defenseman Jacob Rutt has committed to Maine for the fall of '11.

Rutt, a native Mainer is a 4/26/91 birthdate and is currently a senior at Scarborough HS. He was up in Orono today, and made his decision.

He's playing his first year of junior hockey and, in 29 games with the 26-4-1 Monarchs, has a 9-9-18 line with 65 pims.

Rutt, who is ranked in the 7th round in Central's Mid-term Rankings, has size, strength, plays physically and is a strong skater with offensive upside.

A rookie of the week last week, Rutt, who has scored a goal in each of his last three games, also played in the EJHL All-Star game last Monday,

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Outside Anthoine, we have 4 players, with the tallest being 5'8" and the other 3 being listed as 5'7", when I know that is not true, more then one closer to 5'3" to 5'5"

If you look at the Heisneberg updated list, you will see over 100 kids committed to Hockey east, 7 are 5'7" and under, 4 of them coming to Maine, 1 at BU and 1 at BC and 1 to U Mas(ex advantage player Deangelo, shocking).

Maine has 5 F's on board for the future, avg height is 5'7"(tops) and about 160LBS.

Does anyone else find that of concern? UVM alone has 4 over 6'2" F's on board, UNH and Northeastern both have 4 over 6" signed up

With 1D signed up(5'8' according to advantage) at maine, and these 4 F's I would assume the future is a little up in the air

I definitely see your concern....but I'm surprisingly not as concerned about it.

For one thing....those smaller forwards are not flight risks, which is nice. Sub 5'8'' guys....even a guy with the offensive caliber of Gerbe stayed 3 years, and most other guys (even guys of similar caliber) will almost always be lower risk than that.

Will I turn down a handful of high caliber scorers apt to stay 4 years, in favor of slower, less talented big guys (DeKastrozza comes to mind) or the occasional 'top tier' talent who just one and dones us like Purcell or Sweetland? Heck no.

Plus, as long as you're a tenacious forechecker and strong on your skates....what does it matter? I haven't seen Shemansky or Diamond getting overwhelmingly bullied out there and they'll only get stronger as the years pass. Mangene has definitely pulled out his traditional hip check along the boards a few times and put bigger guys in this league on their face, embarrassed.

Also, I know it can be an unfair double standard....but those smaller forwards can play with less to lose and not fear penalties. How many times have we seen Zdeno Chara called on penalties "for being 6'9'' (in other words, the averaged sized D-Man would have never been called for the same penalty....but it just looks worse with him). If Shemansky chases a puck and then cleans someone's clock who has 10 inches on him.....chances are....he'll rarely get a roughing call even if the call would have been made if roles were reversed.

Similarly, most small guys good enough to play D-1 have wheels and they always play with that underdog mentality (which I love) because they've needed to just to get by their whole life. Small guys who can skate blow by those big hefty D-men, and either create tons of odd man rushes or draw a lot of penalties by getting hauled down because they can't keep up. Assuming those guys have a scorers touch....I'll take 'em!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

So the next Nate Gerbe is in this group of small recruits? Is that what you're saying?

No, I said the smaller framed guys are less of a flight risk....

I cited Gerbe as an example because if there was a 6'3'', 215 pound power forward with Gerbe's play and production.....it would be unlikely to see him stay 3-4 years like Nate did.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I don't care how tall they are,as long as they can move like waterbugs and have good hands.

It's not like the old days, when interference was never called, and a guy like Martin St. Louis went undrafted, and had to go to Europe to prove that he's an elite player.

Beef is not the answer anymore.Ask BC...Or BSU,or Miami.I just hope these recruits have wheels and tenacity, like that Shemansky guy.

It's a different world right now.
