News and Notes from Black Bear Country
By Nathan Fournier Published: 26th September 2011

It was a busy weekend for Maine recruits as the USHL held it’s annual preseason Fall Classic, the EJHL opened it’s season, and the two junior “A” leagues in Ontario (OJHL and CCHL) are well underway.

Expectation high for incoming class
By Nathan Fournier Published: 30th September 2011
In this day in age of college hockey recruiting, players are getting younger and younger, but University of Maine men’s ice hockey head coach Tim Whitehead likes to take an “old school” approach to recruiting.

“It’s really starting to become an early (age) recruiting game,” said Whithead during Maine’s media day at Alfond Arena. “Unfortunately, you take more chances that way. I liked it the way it was before, quite frankly, where you watched kids in their senior year in high school or watching them after high school playing in juniors where you know what you’re going to get, a real mature veteran player.”

Half of Maine’s recruiting class made their commitment within the last year, but Whitehead is working in younger kids for the future.

Can't fault him.Union is definitely a better hockey program than Maine is in recent years.Never thought I would live long enough to say that with a straight face, but it's hard to dispute right now.

(The academics aren't bad there,either.)

First I have heard about it but I will find out.

Also Matt Morris has been named to USA's World Junior "A" Challenge roster which takes place November 7th-13th in Langley British Columbia

Right on. The way things stand now, we'll be lucky if Morris shows up in a year or two.

Just got word from the Fighting Saints, Morris was injured Saturday night and will be out three weeks with a lower body injury. He will miss the WJAC

Harris decommits Maine on technicality
By Nathan Fournier Published: 24th October 2011

Brian Harris is no longer a future Black Bear.

The 5’9, 185-pound defenseman confirmed to the Maine Hockey Journal on Monday he will not be attending the University of Maine because he was unable to clear the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Hm...if you read this, this is about a player who may have already peeked. Few Q teams want a one year player....and his other choices are Suny schools @ d3 level...not sure this is a loss.....and hopefully this opens up a sliot for a more impactful D man, losing 4 after next year....and Bill Norman doesn't seem the solution...

Devin Shore has been named to Canada East roster for the WJAC which starts next week

Smart, highly skilled and moves very fast for a six-foot centreman

Gareau honored by EJHL

Wayne, NJ - University of Maine recruit, and Jersey Hitmen center, Dylan Gareau, was named EJHL rookie of the week. Gareau was unstoppable this past weekend in the Hitmen sweep of the Bay State Breakers scoring a powerplay goal and adding 5 assists. On top of that, Gareau was a monster on face offs winning 80% of his draws and leading the Hitmen penalty kill as the Breakers were 0 for 10 on the weekend. A 1993 birth and native of Richmond, ON Canada, Gareau is garnering much NHL interest for this years upcoming NHL entry draft.

Has Whitehead & Co. received any new commitments in the past few weeks?......months??......????

You would think that the new ice making machine and new seats in 2/3 of the lower bowl at Alfond would really WOW them, no?

Not when Timmay is still the head coach.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: Monarchs and More......

Maine has a commitment from Eric Shurhamer for 2013. A 5-11 180 lb. defenseman from St. Thomas Academy.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: Monarchs and More......

When was the last time Maine won a big recruiting battle or got a commitment that made big news? They just aren't attracting top players any more, plain and simple...
