Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

I was involved with the program that year. Jack was a BU verbal. He played at MSC in RI and intended to go to BU until his Maine visit. It was before Alfond expansion and 4000 fans going crazy changed his mind. He called his dad that night and said he wanted to go to Maine. It was the loudest crowd of any school he ever visited

That was probably before they put the acoustical sound absorbing board on the concrete walls. Yeah, it was very loud in there, bounced off that hard smooth concrete like crazy. Remembering some of the center ice club meetings back in those days, Walsh was pretty proud of the Capuano recruiting gets away from the Boston schools.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

What % chance do you think there is that he shows up? Would Maine ever let a kid like this come a year early?

Probably a better chance of him showing up than if he were from Canada. Let's hope that Red isn't going to go all TIMMAY on us and start getting commitments from kids using Maine as a bargaining chip to sign with a Major Jr. team.

I noticed that Muehlbauer just signed to come in next season despite just about all of the "experts" including Heisenberg saying that he wouldn't be in Orono until 2016 or 2017........

How early? He's only a HS sophomore this year. I can't see Maine, or any other college, letting him come before he meets admission requirements.

"Thompson said when he visited Victoria, he was “100 percent” sure that he would go that route.

“But then I visited Maine, and now I’m not sure what I’m going to do,” said Thompson.

“I was really impressed with Coach [Red] Gendron and the coaching staff. They were awesome,” said Thompson. “And I really liked the campus.”"

‘It’s a big win for Maine’: UMaine men’s hockey team receives commitment from 15-year-old power forward

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

Great job by the staff on this one. If he shows up, wonderful. If he doesn't Maine will have plenty of time to find someone else to take his spot. Kids with his kind of talent are definitely worth taking a chance on. I'm really happy with what they have done so far.

One of the good things is that it seems like the staff and Alfond left quite an impression on him. Just from reading reactions from the hockey "experts", I think that this commitment caught a lot of people by surprise. The good thing is that he admits that once he visited Orono......Juniors wasn't such a clear cut choice anymore. A lot of his friends and teammates are going to be playing college hockey.....hopefully peer pressure combined with a desire to play college hockey and get an education will lead him to Orono in a couple of years. As I said before.......the fact that he is from Minnesota rather than Canada may help. We'll see.

UNH Rivalry helps Maine land recruit from Denmark:

http://bangordailynews.com/2014/11/...ey-program-lands-danish-winger/?ref=SportsBox

"He also was recruited by Quinnipiac, Penn State and New Hampshire. He said another factor in his decision was the fact Maine has a healthy rivalry with UNH.

“Maine and New Hampshire is one of the best rivalries in college hockey, and it makes it a lot of fun when you have such a big rival,” Schmidt-Svejstrup said."

Here is a link to some highlight videos of Baron Thompson:

Looks like a power forward with a capital P. I guess maybe another Penner type. Sounds great. Only problem is more than likely a guy like this plays only a season or two. But be nice to see NHL power forwards in Maine jerseys.
