Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Just a quick list of what I saw. They looked good to me. I've seen them play well in the early part of the season each of the past few years so we'll see if they keep it up this year. I'm not convinced of anything yet. The underclassmen looked very strong.

Pretty much it. Even when they've been in the midst of serious losing spells, Timid Tim sometimes manages to get them to play a few good games. Look at the starts the last two season, and then the last few weeks stretch in 2007 to secure their NCAA spot.

But invariably, they fall back into a funk and it never lasts. One game isn't enough to change my mind that TIMMAY needs to go, but it does show that this team has real potential if given a good coach to focus and develop them.

just like I said last year, let's not get too excited about a win against one of the 15 worst teams in the country, especially after losing 3 times to bottom 15 teams.

last year, Maine beat Merrimack, providence, BC, Union and Niagara and lost to Northeastern and UVM. Maine beat ONE GOOD team in BC, but only about 20th in the country good, lost to the tournament teams, and beat teams ranked about 35th to 55th...

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Why would I bother convincing you of anything? All you do is post about how worthless Tim is and should be replaced, but no one here seems able to convince President Kennedy of that fact. I even posted his number, but to no avail. How did your meeting go? Oh, you never met with him? Why not? VIP's would meet with the university president and make change happen. The fact that he's still there, and seems to have the fan's support, tells me you're about as useful as sunscreen at the North Pole.

By the way, not that it matters, but the voters of South Dakota rejected the abortion bill not once, but twice. Good call though.

you gotta learn to read and remember.
I do not post how worthless tim is, I write about the specific problems in his system. You see me writing about the offense keeping 3 or 4 players on every puck... then you read about Maine's goals coming off of screens and rebounds out front... seems to speak to the idea that I was right.. that if Maine is going to score, there MUST be someone out front.

IT does not matter if the 3 forwards on the puck gain control, there is nothing they can do with it once they have it.

you were there on the bench for all of those Shawn years, HE never would have had all 3 forwards in the corner, didn't you pay attention at all? surely when you were at NYA, the head coach there NEVER let all the forwards swarm the puck like mites?

you come to the defense of Tim when you have got to know that what he is doing is wrong.... why? just to be the contrarian? just to get attention?

Funny....when I google Turgeon Maine Hockey, all I get is Genevieve Turgeon, womens hawkey goalie. :D

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Good game last night. Noticed a few things while I was there. Power play units don't know what to do when the puck is passed to them, the players don't move around and create chances, they pass it in and then back to the point, just looking to shoot and get rebounds.
Team as a very hard time switching from offense to defense and vise versa on the fly. Seem to be a lot of odd man rushes for MSU because our players were slow to get back on d.
On the plus side, loved the guy who sat in the section behind the MSU bench near the top that was wearing a Maine home jersey that said "Whitehead Must Go" on the back. If you post on here that was some nice work.
Also, I didn't renew my season tickets this year but did buy the 8 game best of the best power pack and my seat is better than it was before.

Maine beat BU too, but I guess you're not completely wrong again because that's not a GOOD team...that's GREAT team.

Also beat a UNH team that made it to the Final 8 and pushed BU to the brink in Manchester

Glad for the win,BUT this team needs alot of improvements,on the PP....scary at the point.....there needs to be more cleaning out in front of the net....more of OUR TEAM in front of the net....and Darling looks out of position alot....he's getting fooled to move from to post to post and leaving the back-door for the MSU players.......it still comes down to coaching....and that is the negative that is haunting this team from making the improvements/game adjustments......oh well.....................1-3-0 and NOT Happy.

I really don't get all the complaining about the PP. Maine is operating at 25% so far this year. What would be an acceptable percentage? 40%? 50%? 75%?

So they beat a couple good teams. So why did they lose so many games to not-so-good teams?

That's what most of us have been saying. The team has the potential to be good, to play well. But there are so many instances where they don't, often for very long stretches at a time.

There has to be a reason for that. A good coach brings that potential out of his team, so it's no longer potential, but is the reality. So far, exept for those occasional wins over good teams, Timid Tim hasn't shown that he can do that. If they could beat BU, they why couldn't they beat Bentley? Providence? Both Umass, Vermont?

Ahhhh yes to all three.:D

I'm with you there, Rufus. Biggest problem I have with this team and its coaching staff is that I see the talent to compete and not the drive and motivation. That fact that they beat and should have swept a tear-azz BU team in the playoffs shows that clear as day...why didn't they have that effort and intensity from Jan on, and why didn't they have it the first three games this year?

My point was more that our resident insider was off base as usual

BU coasted in dat game. Think Jackie told his boyz to lay low in that one and give Maine fanz and Timbo some hope going into next year.;)

You know things have gotten bad when we've started to interpret conference tournament games as meaningful.

Their pp percentage is good. That's not what I meant. They were standing still. Also, every time the puck gets passed to the D my heart rate shoots up about 20 bpm. A lot of their passes on the pp looked like the puck was on edge. There have been so many times the past few seasons that the D loses the puck in the offensive zone and it looked like they were constantly afraid of that last night.

Part of what I am saying on the PP is not the goal production...but the turnovers and in-descision and bad shot selection by the point-men that in turn gives the opposing team short-handed chances and easy pp killing time...which in turm makes Maine loose time to re-set up several times during their pp....ok with MY explanation?

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

My spies at the game concur with the power play assessment. It's producing goals, but with a fair amount of help. Without improvement, that 25% conversion rate could be cut in half by the holidays.

Interestingly, they also said Friday's game was almost more entertaining. Saturday was fun because of the outcome, and the players' obvious joy afterwards. But Friday was a little bit more intense. In other words, Maine sort of won the battle of letdowns. Interesting b/c this particular spy is not a member of the "Whitehead 5K." He's an unabashed optimist...

watch what Will Ortiz does short handed this weekend in Amherst, he and Marcou should have little trouble covering the points and scoring on breakaways if ONeill continues to shoot into wingers' shin pads.
