Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

What an awful job on the recap.

Paraphrasing:

At one point, the shots were 9-3 Union. And then Maine really started to play better. For a while at least the team didn't look like crap. They didn't score or anything, but they got the shots to 9-8 Union.

Did I really just hear that on Maine radio? That's supposed to be exciting?

I threw up a little just typing it out. Disgraceful.

Black Bear sports radio has a chance to redeem themselves if (and only if) Larry starts the broadcast tomorrow by asking Tim for his 3 key excuses for the game.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

We should just keep this thread going.
At least in the off season we don't get beat by Union. From the two periods of video I saw this team looks to be worse offensively than the last two years. My biggest question of the night is why did Dee get more ice time than Nyquist especially on the PP?

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Good god, whoever that guy is, he's still going on about it.

I. don't. care. that. Maine. was. getting. outshot. And. then. for. a. while. they. outshot. Union.

Whopee.

Don't. care.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

What happened to Dan Hannigan? We need a fire Timmay chant going next Friday night.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

How is there a fire Walt Kyle thread before a Fire Timmy thread this year?

Was it poor finishing or not creating many opportunities? I watched about five minutes then went to the radio, the quality was horrible and I just couldn't take it any more. I'm going tomorrow night and will report back what I see in person.

Congrats on your prediction

It was mostly not creating anything to speak of. The most concerning is Maine had 8 PP's to 1 and lost the game 4-1 and really other than the Shemansky tip in goal the had limited quality chances.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

1 for 8 on the PP? 1 save on 4 shots in the 3rd??!!! They should tie Wilson's arms and legs to the goal in practice next week and have everybody start shooting. He'd probably make more saves. Pathetic.

The Corkum watch is now on the clock.....

Long year for Maine

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Just returned to the hotel after the debacle at Union tonight. It is absolutely disgusting that a Maine team loses to Union - Union? Union? Are you kidding me! Union is the type of team that we used to beat 7-1! I don't care if it is the 1st game of the year. Too many more nights like this and I might even become an internet nutcase!

Here's my take on the game:

1) How can you only score one goal on 8 power plays - they even couldn't get the puck deep in the zone on a 2 minute 6 on 4.
2) I almost hate to say it, but Wilson kept Maine in the game in the 1st period. It could have been over early on, but Wilson made some quality saves. I still think he's a DIII goalie at best, but he did look better. The 3rd goal was a total mess and Wilson certainly would've liked to have had it back.
3) Nobody really impressed me offensively. Some of the younger guys had some decent chances and were working hard - I liked the looks of Diamond, Mangene, and Shemansky. At least they weren't afraid to get their noses dirty.
4) It seemed like Carrierre and Dekastrozza were on the ice a lot. I may never undertand why. I know they are Seniors, but let's be realistic. These guys are role players at best.
5) First period clearly showed that both teams were struggling to get anything going. To be expected for the 1st game of the season. Maine played a pretty good second period. The power play goal was nice and they had a number of end to end rushes that led to decent opportunities.
6) I have to wonder if losing so much last year has the team not believing in itself already. I certainly hope that they can right the ship and come back and at least score a split tomorrow night, but they will need to play much better. Union is not a terrible team and definitely could win again tomorrow.
7) I am going to remain cautiously optimistic, but tonight didn't give me a lot of hope. My wife always tells me that either be a true FAN and support the team or stop going to the games, but it's tough to see what has happened to a national powerhouse in such a short period of time.

That's my 2 cents for now - praying that tomorrow is better!

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

I'm not too worried about Darling missing the Union games. It's Union. Last years' Maine team beat them 3-1 and 5-1.

I hope Whitehead takes this opportunity to see what Sirman can do. I think we all know that Dave Wilson is not the long term solution for this season.

Hegarty being out for three games doesn't seem like a big deal either.

I know it reflects badly on the team when players get suspended but get over it. Whatever they did they did it last spring. This isn't the end of the world or the end of the season.

Hopefully Tanner House is OK to play but even if he isn't I don't think Union should be too much trouble for this Maine team.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yes, ignore the 10+ Maine posters who said something akin to "We suck and Union is better than us" and pick out the one delusional optimist we have left for ridicule. That's the ticket.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Dekastrozza looked very fast, very good on the forecheck.
Wilson gave up only one bad goal, a shorthanded goal that he should have gotten to before the Union player. Other than that, he had NO D in front of him clearing anything.
And I hope 91's skating is just summer rust.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ouch. Ha. Ha. Ha. I may have been overly optimistic. But to my defense, Dave Wilson continues to prove he is a curse against on the road victories. Not that he did a bad job just saying.

Re: Maine offseason part II...Countdown to slightly above the Mendoza line.

Union didn't just play like the better team, they are the better team. The Dutchmen are far more physical than Maine, skate at least as well as Maine, and have a genuine #1 goalie. So,it's no shock that they took this game.

That out of the way,a few comments...

Re:the freshmen:I liked Shemansky and Mangene very much. Mangene, especially. He's gritty and talented.Diamond looked fast enough, but was knocked off the puck easily, and Leidermark showed me nothing at all.Cornell played a solid game at D.Overall,it's looking like a pretty good class.

Ditto for the Sophomores.Abbott,Flynn, and O'Neill are all players.(No need to comment on Nyquist, though he was mobbed tonight every time he had the puck.)

The upperclassmen are the problem here.Dimmen was a ********* nightmare on both ends,Dee just takes up space, and Van Dyk matches every stellar play he makes(and he made a couple of 'em) with an equally bone-headed one.Carriere and Dek will never amount to anything.Aside from House(who's nothing to write home about, either)Maine has nothing to show from two recruited classes.Big-time hangover there from those lost years.

Goaltending is a major problem, too.Wilson was not bad at all tonight, until he went south in the 3rd.He inexplicably decided to "clear" the puck into the forecheck, which resulted in a goal a few seconds later, then later on he was too timid to cover a loose puck before an advancing Union guy got on it,Willie with plenty of time to spare. His nerves always seem to get the best of him on the road.(Not his fault Maine lost,though...How many games are you gonna win, putting one goal on the board, anyway?)

Maine could be real good NEXT year, and the one to follow. This year..?More of the same,IMO.

And I am very tired of waiting.
