Maine Offseason 2020: We Stay Home But Swayman Leaves

Glad I can finally come back and post something worthwhile here. Excited for hockey to be back after 9 long and uncertain months.

They probably didn't deserve to win that game, and if they keep playing like that, it might be a long, dark winter on the ice as well as off. However, I did personally identify some positives. The biggest and most obvious was Theissen, he was stellar in this game, made at least two unbelievable stops off the top of my head that most other goalies let in. He was essentially the sole reason they were in the game at all, let alone won it. I thought he tracked the puck well, and his rebound control was excellent, very few long rebounds come to mind. If that's how he plays going forward, he'll have shown himself a worthy successor to Swayman, which is a high bar to clear.

I liked the play of a few of the freshmen, Breen, Dunn, and Houle come to mind quickly. Breen obviously had the lone goal in regulation, and tacked on another in the shootout to keep Maine alive. He looks to have a nose for the net and might provide some of that elusive scoring touch they've lacked over the last few seasons. Dunn largely played well from the backend, aside from getting split easily on the UNH goal. But, for being a freshman making his debut in the height of COVID, I think he played well. Houle had a nice snipe in the shootout to extend the game, he looks to have a good shot on him and may possibly provide depth scoring. He also plays with a physical edge, which will be valuable as long as he can control it, there was a hit he threw that looked dirty even to me, and he got lucky the refs didn't see it. Dawe also had a great game, the pass to Breen on the goal was beautiful and set him up perfectly. Speaking of the goal, I also liked how they responded immediately to UNH scoring to tie it back up instead of getting crestfallen that Theissen finally conceded a goal. In all, I'd characterize it as a shaky performance everywhere but the goal crease, but with some specific points you can pick out as positives. I do hope they play a much better and more complete game tomorrow night, though, as I do think they are better than UNH.

Come out flat, check
Get out shot 2 or 3-to-1 through 2 periods, check.
Take a billion penalties, check.
Get bailed out by the goalie..... check.

Maybe Theissen can be as good and consistent as Sway. If not theyre going 5-20.

It wasn't pretty at times but it's what I expected. They lost most of their scoring from last year, best goalie in the nation and were playing on the road. They've been practicing on a normal ice sheet for 3 months and then had to play on an Olympic sheet. So, the first period I chalked up to that, second period they were just out played, third period I actually thought Maine had the better of the play.

Theissen looked great, really poised and cut down every angle. I know you hate the defensemen, but I think they actually did a decent job keeping the shots to the outside. IMO the reason the shots were so lopsided is because Maine couldn't sustain any offense. It's going to take a while to find their identity but having a goalie to steal games till then is a huge plus.

Dawe was great, Breen looks as good as advertised and we know how good Tralmaks can be. Houle looks really promising, as does Dunn, and I thought Gaudette was really active. If they can have a couple guys step up and pitch in goals, I think Maine will be decent. Can't take that many penalties tonight or it's going to be a long night.

They need Tralmaks and Schmidt to be dominant forwards. Not sure they’re those guys though.

Couldn’t agree more on the forwards being the reason Maine gave up so many shots. Maine seems to do better on the counter and that is where a lot of their goals come from but it’s hard to win consistently when the ice is that tilted.

The second goal they’ve done a good job of getting rid of in recent times but obviously not on that occasion. I like having Morrissey and Poissant in the lineup. It would have been nice to see Ostman tonight. Given all the uncertainly why not play him?

Thats more like it, a game just like the last 8 years, lots of penalties and a loss. Theissen will have his work cut out for him this season

Looks like it's up to Thiessen, like it was Swayman last year. The other goal tenders must not be as good or we would have seen another one last night. I don't think Gendron knows how to coach in the new era of Hockey East. Or if he does, he refuses to change. I'm referring to penalties! Perhaps the forwards will develop as the season progresses and so must Maine's defense!
