Maine Offseason 2020: We Stay Home But Swayman Leaves

Maine doesn't want to spend the money it would take to be a top tier program again. I don't expect to ever see them be anything other than a bottom-tier team.

To be fair, Maine doesn't have the money it would take to be a top tier program again. Demographics and geography are working against us.

Maine got a good commit today: https://fdspodcastnetwork.com/2020/1...ding-to-orono/

He’s putting up great numbers in a league where most of the guys are older.

Red has done a good job getting guys from Quebec and the maritimes.

I was looking at this recruits data. He is young. I have to admit I know nothing of this league he is in. In a search couldnt find much as to if this league has had much success developing players for advancement.
any insight out there?

We just spin our wheels and pee in the wind on this forum when folks get into the Red and Whitehead debate. It does nothing, its water under the bridge.
Everyone here wants the same thing.
My eye is on Ken Ralph, with hopes he can make some good changes.

I was watching some of the 2012 frozen Fenway game over the weekend and it’s crazy how much better Maine’s goaltending and defense is now versus then. I think o’neill is the only dman from that team who gets into the team now.

mike cornell is still playing pro hockey and is better than all the D Maine has now or has had recently besides Keeper.

Red landed a once in a generation goalie. Good on him for it but they gave up a zillion shots last year and Swayman made that D look good. Without him I’m not holding my breath.

It really is incredible how much better of a coach Timmy becomes as time goes on. No doubt he was able to recruit some really good forwards, but the goaltending and D were complete disasters. Not to mention he typically had no fourth line and oftentimes a mediocre third line as well.

A lot of people decided a few years ago Red was bad and they wouldn’t change their tune even if Maine wins a national championship. He’s not Shawn, and no one ever will be, but it’s hard to realistically imagine Maine would be any better off with someone else in charge. That’s even more true when you factor money in.

Nobody preferred Whitehead to SW. Nobody. But RG has been a lot worse than Timmay, and that's a fact.

And to call Bish, Darling, Lundin, et al, "disasters" compared to what Red has brought to Orono just makes me want you to pass that joint over to me even more.

I don't believe anyone thinks Tim was a great coach but he had far more success than Red has had. Another reason to lay off the bong is your memory. Bish was a complete disaster? Matty Lundin was handled wrong but a complete disaster. In fairness to Red he doesn't have the resources he needs to be successful but even if he had it I doubt it would bring back the glory days of Maine hockey. At this point who cares, the pandemic is a far more pressing issue than whether or not Maine is good, bad or indifferent.

There's a lot of truth to this, during the last 5 years of TW's tenure, Maine was extremely top heavy, loaded with scoring talent but the defense and goaltending situation was somewhat of a disaster. Those teams relied so much on the powerplay and struggled 5 on 5.

If there's one thing that Red, Guite and Alfie have done, they've put much deeper teams on the ice. Last year there were 7 serviceable d-men and I know Swayman bailed them out, but that was the best defensive d core Maine has had in a very long time. There's going to be a drop off in goaltending but from the looks of it, Maine has 3 division 1 goalies on the roster. I expect to see Thiessen and Ostman split time to start but Androlewicz looks like he can play too.

Maine's record over the last 3 seasons is 51-44-13, considering the staff has done this with next to no budget, I give them a lot of credit. Do I think Red deserves an extension? Not yet, but depending on what happens with this season, if he gets the boys above .500 in the shortened season, I think he's earned another year or two.

Maine / UNH games are a go for this weekend as of now. Games have been switched and will be played in Durham instead of Orono.

Really happy they’re playing. Hopefully both teams can not screw up between now and Saturday night.

It will be interesting to see how both teams look. I would hope Red gives everyone a game. I’m sure most folks will disagree but I don’t see winning as super important this weekend or really even this season. I think more than anything else Maine needs to figure out what they have and work towards a strong season next year.

Best defensive corps....you people are nuts. They gave up 35 shots a night. Tims last 3 teams gave up 25, 28 and 29.

the difference is Swayman gave you god like 940 goaltending and the bums back then gave you 895 if you were lucky. The defensemen are not better

I think until Maine figures out a way to fund the program at all close to the top 25 in the nation arguing about which coach has been worse is completely academic.

Most likely, they will not come up with it, and there is no point in arguing at all x)

Larrys BDN article today. Reds season plan.
But in fairness there are promising freshmen forwards. Next year might be a better gage of things.

"“Where are the goals going to come from? I don’t know. The only thing that matters is we score one more than the other team,” eighth-year head coach Red Gendron said.

I'm pretty excited for the season. It's encouraging to hear that the freshmen look good. I was doing a bit of research last night and suspect five of the six forwards will contribute and Dunn should be good as a dman. I have confidence the swedish goalie will be decent enough as well.

I don't really understand the paper saying Maine definitely won't compete for top four. BC is an absolute lock to be top four but after them? UMA has looked awful and Providence was horrible against BC. I think UML will probably be top four and either Northereastern or BU could be decent(if they play) but I don't think its unrealistic for Maine to be in the mix.

Drop the puck!!!

Governor Mills just announced that the State will NOT be granting a waiver request from UMaine to hold sporting events that would be above the 50 person indoor gathering limit. So no games at the Alfond for the foreseeable future. The Black Bears should get ready to fully embrace the "Road Warrior" mentality!

It looks like Morrissey is the only guy missing you would expect to be in the lineup. Maine went with seven D with Dunn replacing Kleiboer from last year's lineup. It will be interesting to see who the odd man out is as far as the regular pairs.

Thiessen was great. Maine’s forwards need to do much better not turning the puck over and keeping it down the other end.
