Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

My question is: If they have another disaster of a season for 2016-17 does that mean this Program is DONE...?

It all comes down to money and economics, as everything always does. In this economy, it appears the program may end up being unsustainable, but Maine won't be the only program having to cut hockey if things get that bad everywhere else. As Maine goes, so goes the nation.

More than money at this point, the program has stepped back each of reds years. It appears he is an asst.coach in a head coaches position.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

How many bad freshmen classes before its OK to question this regimes recruiting? I keep getting told they're good recruiters and then we keep seeing freshmen that can't play. What's the time table for the good ones to show up? Its year 3 here.

And how much worse will it be when these guys are the older guys? Ay papi.

I would be willing to give Red more time to recruit talent. Except, I really question his ability to coach and maximize the talent that he has. I think if he had a team loaded with talent he probably would do well.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

No doubt, glad I didn't drive up. The freshman class is just as bad as the last couple classes. Red has no confidence in them. He keeps sitting guys, no continuity, no real speed, goaltending is suspect. Red isn't getting his contract renewal at this pace.

Pardon my asking, but when is Coach Gendron's contract up?

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

The University of Maine has no business running a D-1 ice hockey program......it didn't make sense back in the 80s but they struck gold with Shawn Walsh and had a major sugar daddy with Harold Alfond. They are dead and gone.......and soon the ice hockey program will be too.

But what about Guite, also? How can this team be so bad at the penalty kill with him there?

But then, so would TIMMAY. So would just about anyone.

Speaking of Tim, he is now 14-2-1. I bet he is pleased to be out of Orono. Particularly with all of the challenges facing Maine's program.

Good for Tim. Too bad he couldn't do that good after he kicked Grant to the curb.

Grant was ready to retire and play more golf. The athletic department honored him with a trbute and banquet.

Do you honestly think Maine is any worse than Merrimack, Umass, Northeastern, UConn, or UVM this year? I don't think there is much between any of those teams. Getting rid of football would make much more sense than hockey. As I said last week the school/system have a lot bigger issues to figure out before they begin to look at the athletic department.

Assuming Maine wants to proceed with D1 hockey(I think its very unlikely they will ever get rid of it), I'm undecided on whether Red is the right man or not. To me the biggest issue with getting rid of him would be who would do the hiring of a new coach? Do you really think Karlton would find someone any better? It's discouraging to me that when Red was hired there weren't any other names in the mix that I would want. Honestly I'm not sure who is out there now (realistically) who I would want to see coach Maine. If someone brought a truck load of money up to Orono to get Leaman or something like that it would be great, but assuming that doesn't happen I think staying with Red is the prudent move.

If Red does continue next year here are the two things him/administration should set as goals 1. having a schedule that gives Maine the most opportunity to win games. They have absolutely ****** themselves all three of Red's years and hopefully he has learned from those mistakes. 2. fill up the Alfond. I see the announces attendance for this weekend, which is 'tickets sold,' was only 3300. I don't remember ever seeing it that low. I would offer really cheap season tickets and hopefully you get some new fans in.

That can't happen. I refuse to believe that's a realistic outcome.

Virtually the whole university would have to be shut down for that to happen.

Projected Budget shortfalls are huge. The buildings on campus are falling apart. They don't seem to want to get rid of programs at the smaller campuses. Chancellors office still a huge waste of money with no talk of getting rid of it. Its a mess.

No doubt he's probably sleeping better, his family is much happier and he doesn't have to worry about raising $200,000 a year either.

What do they expect? They have frozen tuition, the state appropriation has either been stagnant or when it has gone up at all it doesn't keep pace with inflation. Add to the mix ~7% yearly increase in health insurance costs and ~2% increase in salaries and flat or falling enrollment... The system needs major restructuring. There is too much redundancy across all of the campuses.

He is responsible for fund raising at Kimball Union. That is part of his job description and was a condition when he was hired.
