Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

A Walrus would know all about such things.:D
Wally knows a lot about a lot. Of course, he's an Orono boy like me so it shouldn't come as a surprise. And the owner of Marshall Wharf is as well. Sorry I missed Eventide - I'm not an oyster guy but they certainly have a huuuge following there. I encourage you to not ignore Geary's as well. They are one of the oldest craft breweries in the country, and are the foundation upon which new breweries are built. They may not use non-GMO, free-range, organic, hand-fed hops, but they make a dam fine selection of beers.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

It was nice to meet you a few years ago as well, thanks for the tips. This trip, we'll be flying into Portland early evening so we're driving to Camden and spending the night/most of the next day there. We'll then do a night on MDI, and weather permitting a sunset kayak tour. I would like to take the lady to Schoodic point, just not sure if we'll have time... I really loved it when I was there in September of 2013. We have to be back in Portland around 7 on Thursday, so the drive to Schoodic may be a little much for having to get back. Unfortunately, no Orono on this trip as we'll be hugging the coast the whole time. Pat's was pretty delicious though.

I live in Bar Harbor, so if you need a local's perspective on anything feel free to ask. I will admit that I tend to avoid most of the restaurants during the busy season and thus tend to frequent places that stay open year-round (or nearly year-round, some places close for a month or so). Blaze has the best selection of taps in Bar Harbor, and the food is cooked in a wood fired oven. The Duck fat fries aren't bad either. Side Street Cafe is my go to place for a reasonable dinner and drink. I second the recommendation for Two Cats for breakfast. Atlantic Brewing is in the village of Town Hill (it's about a mile from my house), not sure if they are still doing brewery tours in October though. The Kayaking around MDI is great, and if you have time for a hike, the Precipice is the ultimate MDI hike (non technical climb on ledges and iron rungs up a side of a cliff with spectacular views).

I have never been less excited for a Maine hockey season. Some futures bets:

OVER/UNDER: Maine scores more than the 77 goals scored as a team in 2007-08.

OVER/UNDER: Maine's leading goal scorer scores more than the 10 goals Wes Clark led the team with in 2007-08.

OVER/UNDER: Maine wins 11.5 games.

I am taking the under on all 3.

Over. I understand the basis of the pessimism, but even that 07/08 team had slightly better GPG production than that offering (it was also 77, but done so with 2 fewer GP).

Over. Our offense won't be blowing the doors off of anyone this year, but if healthy, I expect Swavely, Byron, Vesey, and Brown to all be in the 10-15 range. If a freshman steps up and is a pleasant surprise, great.

OVER/UNDER: Maine wins 11.5 games.

Depends on how improved we are in the net. Gonna need some of those 2-1 wins. That being said, I'll still go a little over. Even UMass and UConn had double digit wins last year. The offense isn't inspiring on paper, but we'll hopefully be better than 2nd to last in the goals against dept. I'll go with a ho-hum 15 win season.

I agree with this. As important as goaltending will be I think team defense needs to improve just as much. Maine had way too many defensive breakdowns last year.

More than anything else this year I hope we see a really hard-working tough team. I think down the road we could see Red showing Pecarao the door as a real turning point. No one player is more important than the team and hopefully that message got across with Pecararo leaving.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I'll also be looking for the goaltenders and defensemen to improve as well. As important as goals are, if Romeo and Morris can't stop the puck, and if the blueliners just let guys walk in, we don't have a prayer.

But if I had to guess on a leading scorer, I'll go with Vesey. I look for him to have a breakout sophomore year.

ADD Rob McGovern to the goaltending mix, incoming Freshman @ 6'5" 230 lbs...

a line of Vesey, Byron and Brown would annihilate crap teams, but would leave maine with one line and maine would not score against PC or Union.

I hope Shurhamer and Renouf have been devoting extra time to their cardio this summer because they're going to be logging A LOT of minutes.

We were -13 as a team last year, but those two were +8 and +3 respectively (1st and 3rd on the team). Hopefully we see meaningful progress out of Riley and Hamilton, but there are going to be a lot of nights where there are 2, sometimes 3 freshmen at the blue line. Those first two mentioned will be heavily leaned on this year.

I want to see if Malcolm has improved. He was gassed every shift.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

He needs a lot of work on his game...he's a Project to say the least.

I'm a huge Malcom Hayes guy. I'm not looking for him to be a top line scorer. He's a converted defenseman who makes better contact than any Maine player has made in years. His touch will improve year by year... but if the only thing he becomes for us is a 3rd line enforcer, good for 15-20 points/year and incredibly hard to play against... I'll definitely take it.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Don't be dissin on Hayes. He's a big tough body that gets other players attention. Can you say look out? He made huge strides last year coming from a do it all defensemen in prep to a power forward in college. Huge difference physically on a player between D and forward , especially in college where you don't take shifts off. Think he will be a HUGE force out there this year.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Hayes wasn't gassed every shift. He's in terrific shape but needs to work on his stride and overall skating ability.
Being in shape(which he no doubt is) is different than being in hockey shape. I've seen plenty of college weightlifters get construction jobs and then worked under the table by fat old guys who are in "shape' for what they do. I don't know enough about the mechanics of skating to know if thats it or not? But he looked like he struggled at the end of his shifts to me. He is going to be a force, I thought his hands were pretty good and he isn't afraid to whack someone or wasn't until clean hits got called penalties because they made a lot of noise or the guy crumbled like a rag doll. Once he finds a home out front I can see him scoring some goals

I hope he improves, but there is no way he could have played in a Providence practice this past season without just throwing in the towel or having the goalies embarrassing him with their skating ability.
do you remember when he played D? Mushaluk was, on here, referred to as the human pylon (for a reason), and Hayes was not half as good as Mushaluk, positionally or decision-making-wise

this is D1 hockey people. he did not finish last season as a good D1 player, not by a long stretch.

and to walrus's point. Michael Phelps is in great shape too, but I cannot imagine that he could outskate Garth Snow today.
