Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I'm a big fan... Between my coaching schedule and a three year old, it is nearly impossible for me to make it to a game up in Orono nowadays...

While it's not a bad move I wonder how it's going to impact attendance. A half-empty Alfond is a turn-off for potential recruits.

I think it will improve attendence. It gives people a way to stay interested and could turn casual fans into season ticket holders. I think it's a good idea and welcome step in the right direction.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

The rest of the athletic world has been streamed for years. With no harm done to attendance. A few people might stay home to watch a network-produced game with a plethora of camera angles. Nobody stays home to watch a sub-par college production with 2 or 3 crappy cameras.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Making my 2nd trip out to Maine in October. I'll be heading to the Icebreaker in what is amounting to a family reunion of sorts. There will be 8 UND fans in our party. Looking forward to taking future Mrs cF to MDI for a couple of relaxing days/nights before everyone else joins us in Portland.

Last time I was out your way, I spent most of the time along the coast and only got a couple nights in Portland. Any suggestions on family friendly places to go? One member of our party is under 2 years old.

There's a children's museum (http://kitetails.org/) in Portland about a block up from the Civic Center. Head out to Two Lights and get some good lobster rolls (http://lobstershacktwolights.com/) just be ready to wait in line (and remember it is BYOB/wine).

Hit Pai Men Meyake on State street while here. Best kept food secret in Portland. There is a plethora of great food choices all over Portland. On the way up to Mount Desert Island, I might stop at Youngs Lobster Pound in Belfast. Great selections and right on the water. Belfast was becoming a cool sea coast community, worth a stop there to stroll around.

It was good meeting you the other year, cFA. Teddy Bear is right on - most sentient post he's made in years. Don't worry about the line at the Lobster Shack out to Two Lights - if it is still open at that time in October, it will be locals only. Rockland is an old hard-knuckles fishing community that is experiencing a hipster renaissance. Rockport and Camden are nice harbors and all three of those towns aren't far from Belfast. I think you went to Pat's in Orono (don't bother with any of the other locations) the last time you were here. Whether you liked it or not, you have to go back. It's pretty much a rule.

If you go to MDI, take a left in Ellsworth and go to Schoodic Point. Too bad its october I'd tell you to go to Dennetts wharf in Castine and sit on the wharf and have a cocktail. One of my favorite things to do on a hot summer day. Few pops and plate of steamers, pretty good way to spend an hour or two

Angelo's Pizza in Old Town is far better than Pat's in my opinion. It's primarily take out style but they do have tables for dining. Doesn't have the character of Pat's , but if you want a quality pizza with excellent crust this is the place. On Monday night they have a special. Purchase one pizza with two or more toppings and get a single item pizza free. You probably won't be near Old Town, but the next time you are in the Bangor area keep it mind.

Agree with the Pizza @ Angelo's and Agree with the the Atmosphere @ Pat's...August and Hockey's not that far away!

It was nice to meet you a few years ago as well, thanks for the tips. This trip, we'll be flying into Portland early evening so we're driving to Camden and spending the night/most of the next day there. We'll then do a night on MDI, and weather permitting a sunset kayak tour. I would like to take the lady to Schoodic point, just not sure if we'll have time... I really loved it when I was there in September of 2013. We have to be back in Portland around 7 on Thursday, so the drive to Schoodic may be a little much for having to get back. Unfortunately, no Orono on this trip as we'll be hugging the coast the whole time. Pat's was pretty delicious though.

And if you're in Belfast and are a beer guy, a must is Marshall Wharf Brewing which is attached to Three Tides Restaurant. As for MDI, Cafe This Way does a really nice job, Two Cats for brunch is a staple of our trips up there, and if you're looking to just grab some pizza, Rosalie's.

I Portland, I second Pai Men Miyake. Also, Salvage BBQ on Congress, Boda, and Timber Steakhouse.

Pats pizza is better
I would rather not eat than go to Old Town and smell the mill
Pats is a must

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Pat's is an issue of tradition, not fine cuisine. And while there are a tremendous amount of truly excellent dining options in Portland, why come all the way from Colorado Springs to eat excellent noodles or Thai food? Go for the fresh, local seafood. Street & Co. is probably considered the best. Boone's on the pier has been very popular since opening. The Lobster Shack is an institution, if it is still open at that time of year. We should keep J's Oyster Bar to ourselves and not tell the tourists about it. And DiMillo's Floating Restaurant is a great place to take your out-of-town relatives - especially if they're paying. cFA - my recommendation is not merely to eat local, but to eat what is not local where you live.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I agree with Ray, eat as much fresh seafood as you can. Lobsters are generally quite plentiful in October as they head back out to deeper water. The biggest catches of the season are generally at this time.

Fortunately, my girlfriend is Pescatarian, so we are used to eating crappy seafood that gets flown in. Looking forward to more fresh off the boat items this trip!

We are also big craft beer people, so we will want/need to stop at a new brewery each day if possible. Marshal Wharf is already on the schedule for late lunch Wednesday.

Attaboy. When in Portland, Allagash Brewing, Foundation Brewing, and Bissell Brothers are all within 100 yards of each other maing it easy to kill three birds with one stone.... As you are heading up to MDI, I'd also recommend stopping at Maine Beer Co. in Freeport and Oxbow Brewing in Newcastle. Maine Beer Co is about two minutes off the highway and Oxbow is about a ten minute departure from route 1 in Wiscassett.

And that's a very good point about hitting seafood joints... I second Street & Company, as well as J's Oyster Bar. Eventide is also pretty darn good.

A Walrus would know all about such things.:D
