Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

That is their home arena now. They have a rink on campus but have only played exhibitions there for a couple years. I can't imagine them trying to host a Hockey East game at Freitas.

I just googled it and it doesn't look horrible to me. I don't think it's a lot smaller than Merrimack or Providence's rinks. I wouldn't be surprised if Maine plays there Thursday before Fenway.

This is a little off topic, but I think the way forward is to have smaller rinks and fill them up. It's a bad look to have rinks half to two thirds full and you don't have the atmosphere with all the empty seats either. This is a problem that isn't exclusive to Maine, seems attendance has dropped for a lot of schools the last five to 10 years.

I have created a new thread, Average Men's Attendance, as you are not the first one to mention attendance drops. I have a spreadsheet with all attendance figures going back to at least the 2001-02 season. As for your idea to have smaller arenas, that is what UNO did and one of their fans, Red Cows, railed against it, however it is yet to be seen if the arena size is too small or not.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

The BU home schedule has been released per Sean Pickett and it shows they are hosting Maine Friday 1/20. The corresponding game at Alfond will be either Saturday 1/21 or Sunday 1/22. That guarantees both BU and BC will be making an appearance. It also ensures that Maine will play at UConn sometime around the Fenway game on 1/14. UNH and Northeastern will play on 1/12 and it is possible Maine will follow suit and play a Thursday night game. There are still two games available to schedule, plus the exhibition vs New Brunswick.

Alfond: NU (2), UMA (2), BC, BU, UNH, ND, UML, RPI (2), Qpac (2) - 13
Road: UVM (2), MC (2), PC (2), BU, UNH, UML, UC, Miami (2), Colgate (2) - 14
Neutral: BC, ND, Brown, UNH, UC - 5

Last two games are home against AIC. I think its a lot easier schedule than last year.

The schedule should be released on Thursday. That will be followed up by a major redesign on the athletics department website that will roll out on July 1 with the start of the new fiscal year.

Update: The schedule release will be part of the rollout of the new web page on Friday.

Frozen Fenway doubleheaders were formally announced yesterday and Maine will indeed play UConn on 1/14, in the first game of the doubleheader.

The UCONN scheduled released today on Twitter (@TheUConnBlog) confirms that the non-Fenway game is a home game for UCONN on 1/12

No venue for it yet. I wonder if they will play it on campus or maybe somewhere in Boston? I'm assuming the XL center is booked that night.

UConn has played some games at Bridgeport in the past.

It's too bad they are playing an exhibition game in place of a real one, but other than that the schedule looks pretty good. Its nice that season ticket prices have come down although I'm not a big fan of calling them memberships.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Season tickets are available in four tiers. It appears that Blue (C,D,M,N) is sold out.

Gold (First four rows of upper deck) $855 ($355 + $500 donation)
Silver (front row on glass) $380 (limited quantities)
White: (Rest of arena) $285

With 19 home games (including exhibitions, HE Playoffs) that works out to:
Gold: $45
Silver: $20
Blue: $18.15
White: $15

They are playing a full allotment of 34 games, plus the exhibition vs a Canadian team, plus an exhibition vs USNDP. That is the maximum number of games they are allowed to play.

You're right, I obviously can't count. Schedule gets two thumbs up from me.
