Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?
First and foremost we the Maine Hockey fans had something real special when SW was in charge and he was on board with the fans, the small money and big money types...he knew he needed all for this to work, BUT with his death came the changing of the landscape @ Maine and in the Athletic department...The AD's in charge and the for the most part the choice to keep Tim Whitehead for the 12 year period more or less tore down the foundation that SW and many/many hard working and dedicated fans and donors help build into a Top 20 team year after year and a Top 4 in Hockey East...and always you would hear you can't count Maine out of being a legit contender for the Frozen 4 Championship. Now the College Hockey world has changed and more or less Maine has fallen way behind in keeping up with the other top programs in the country. Money is a issue/ recruiting is a issue/ losing does not help either. This Program/ AD's in charge/ and the current Coaching Staff is not the answer...the "SAD" part is we may have seen the BEST and for the most part we will be a also ran/ door-mat/ .500 Team will be the icing on our cake....no there's a-lot that can be done...but won't...not now or in the fore-see able future...which stinks out loud. The damage has been done since Shawn died. They have been and are desperate for revenue which has led them into things that help in the short term but hurt long term. I can't see where they have sold very many tickets for Portland or new season tickets. Unless the team gets off to a good start it could be a really tough year financially.
