Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

Re: Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

.........BTW - What's up with the Thanksgiving Day game in Lewiston? Between turkey coma and football, I'd be surprised if anyone but officials and family desperate to see their players on the holiday attend:eek::confused:

Scheduling the National Russian Team on Thanksgiving is not the best situation for players and families. It was probably the only date available. I suspect the dedicated hockey fans in Lewiston and Auburn will go no matter what day it is.;)

Re: Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

Exactly half of the 24 minutes assessed were for a 2+10, when a Maine defender cross checked Gifford in the back after the whistle. It was a fast paced, hard fought game, and there were certainly calls that could have been made both ways, but I don;t see that as a game changer. The fact that Maine couldn't mount a sustained offense was. Ott was fantastic in net, as usual.

Bill Shankly, soccer coach: “The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they do not know the game.”

I think it is more about the clinic getting great numbers that the team is doing the night before in Lewiston, Tues most are still in school. Wed is the best day to draw numbers, no school, during the week, not much else going on. http://www.thecolisee.com/

Re: Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

Agree there were missed calls, but they went both ways....mostly not calling tripping (which more appropriately should be called stumbling). Ott made some big saves and kept the Black Bears within striking distance.

Wasn't at the Umaine game. Just commenting on the permissive attitude when it comes to trips.

Stumbling isn't in the rulebook. I agree that sometimes legal body contact causes a player to lose balance & fall, and that's a good non-call. But I've been to countless hockey games in my life where clear and obvious stick-to-skate trips are made and not called. I see at least one per game, sometimes quite a few more, where no reasonable person would claim the offender was making an attempt to gain control of the puck.

Stick-in-skate trips = tripping (unless resulting from a poke-check or hook-check in which the player was clearly attempting to gain puck possession). Extended-leg trips (leg checks) = tripping. Clipping = tripping (except where player was clearly attempting to block a shot).

Agree. However, all too often you will see a player lose an edge, or hop over a stick etc. and half the stands and the coaches on the bench erupt over the "non-call." In the game on Saturday there were several of that variety, and several of the type you mentioned.

Anyone go to Lewiston for the Team Russia game? Shots on goal and penalty minutes were almost identical. I was planning on going. Change in plans.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2012 - 2013

Very disappointing losses to a very talented BC team. I did not expect Maine to allow 17 goals in 2 games. I wasn't at the game. Was it a total lack of defense, goal tending or both? Maine used 3 goal tenders and nothing seemed to work.

More a matter of "speed kills." BC has it across the board and the Black Bears are lacking enough of it.

That would explain the hooking and interference penalties on Maine. What I don't understand is how BC with all this talent and very high ranking only draws 200 people. If this were a Maine team, I am guessing attendance would be greater than that.

Location, location, location. Not a whole lot of distractions in Down East Maine compared to greater Boston. Additionally, Maine is a hockey school, whereas BC, despite numerous National Championships, is not.

6 freshman and 6 sophomores who play a lot of shifts adds up to some inexperience also. Maybe they can take away some lessons from this game.

We'll see this weekend when Maine plays Dartmouth at Alfond Arena for two games.

I noticed she also played for the Under 19 team in the 2012 Challenge Cup in Washingto, DC. Two assists, two points and 4 penalty minutes.
