Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

It sounded like a better phrase when the originator of it could still speak. :(

On topic, I'd be interested in hearing from Maine fans what they think the key to the better results in the past year plus is. Are they playing more of a team game as Ma#1ne Hky says? Have individual players improved under Lewis? Or has the talent level of the roster been upgraded as DC indicates?

I haven't seen Maine yet this year, but I'd say all of the above as factors to their strong start, although maybe it's time to drop SH from the schedule?

Ok DC, fair enough. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Let's see what happens in their upcoming conference games when they are up against teams that have learned how to play for 60 minutes.

Even you however, must find the irony in the fact that the team is currently being co-lead by a D3 transfer out of Southern Maine. ;).

Connecticut gets their first win of the year today against Maine 3-0. Maine won yesterday's game 4-3. Connecticut made a run late in the game yesterday but wasn't enough. Maine is now 1-1-0 in Hockey East play. Looking forward to seeing the Bears at home.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Maine did not have a very good 1st period as they were down 1 - 0 and were outshot 17-4. Maine commited soa couple of penalties in the 2nd which led to NU power play goals to make it 3-0. The 3rd power play goal was due to a roughing call on Maine. Maine never gave up and battled back with 2 goals late in the 3rd period to make it interesting.

With a Maine win today against Providence, Maine will move into a tie with BC for the conference lead. Hockey East is really competitive this year. Maine held the lead yesterday 3-2, with less than 5 minutes remaining Providence tied it up. Final 3-3.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Brittany Ott didn't have a very good day in goal. May not have been all her fault. Niagra comes to the Alfond next weekend.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

As I posted in PC thread Ott played very well both days. Today PC had lots of great socring chances and were very effective on the PP scoring on like 3 of 4 opportunities.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

The Purple Eagles have struggled so far this season against Hockey East teams. Lost twice to UNH and twice to BU. THey tied twice a very good Vermont team. Looking forward to seeing Niagra this weekend at the Alfond. The Black Bears are going to be a formidable opponent after tying and losing to Providence last weekend.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Maine defeats Niagra today at Alfond Arena 3-0. Good goal tending by Ott and a beautiful short handed goal by Brittany Dougherty. She stripped the puck from the Niagra player at mid ice and carried it in for an unassisted goal. Both teams had 5 on 3 opportunities and could not score. They play again tomorrow.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Maine showed some resilience against Niagra in the 2nd game. The Purple Eagles were up 2-0, when Maine scored 3 straight goals to go ahead 3-2. Niagra pulled their goal tender and scored the tying goal with 14 seconds left in regulation. That's how it ended with no scoring in OT. Niagra had more fight than Saturday's game.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Maine ties Brown twice. On Saturday the score was 4-4 and on Sunday it was 0 - 0. Nice to see Kylie Smith in goal on Sunday, her first career shutout.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Brittany Ott records a shutout over UNH. Maine 3-0. Nice to see Maine developing some consistency with two straight wins.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Congratulations to the team for being the Team of the Week in Hockey East. In addition, Brittany Ott was selected defensive player of the week. Maine had a great week by defeating Vermont and UNH.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

Forward Shawna Lesperance who has played for the Pittsburgh Pens Elite the last two years (and also spent 4 playing at Culver Academy) has committed to Maine as well. She's from Windsor, ONT.

Thanks for the info. Last year when she played for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite (U 16) team, her totals including the playoffs, were 16 games played, 6 goals, 14 assists, and 12 PIM.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2011-2012

BC comes to Alfond Arena for two games this weekend. 7:00 p.m. tomorrow and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Maine has had 6 consecutive games without a loss (3 ties). The team has had problems getting wins at home. It would be great to get a split.
