This is perfect timing for Maine to have some time off. To take a step back and reflect.
This is a group that had their first experience of expectations. They haven't exceeded them, but there are plenty points of pride. They haven't underachieved, but there's much work to be done.
If there's one thing I learned about this group of guys from last year is: put a chip on their shoulder...give them something to prove...and watch out!
There were lofty expectations, and hey, they opened the season with an 8 goal performance, they swept UND, life is good, right? Well, as was pointed out, they're 0-3-1 against the teams that matter most in this conference (no offense everyone else) so the reality is ... they're a long way from proving anything major.
An emphasis has to be placed on the 3rd period play, and tonight was a good segway of confidence toward that lesson. If I were a coach, I would question our physical condition, and basically ask if the issue is: we're running out of gas? care? If I'm a player and I don't want to get gassed at practice, best believe I'll be finishing every check in my future 3rd periods.
This is a team that can be elite when they're hungry, and its going to be a nice long break to think about just how hungry they are. They'll get to face a 1st class program and really see what they're made of in their first game back. I'm excited.
