Re: Maine Black Bears 2010-2011 - Part Deux

As we know, offense is not a problem....and defense can be taught.

lemme take a crack at this one....
Russian can be taught, but not by me, I don't speak it and i have never studied it.
Brain surgery can be taught, but not by me....same reason
Heck, sand castle making can be taught, but not by me....
that said.
HOW IN He1i is defense gonna be taught up in Orono?

Apparently pretty well, judging by the first 50 minutes. Key correctable mistakes in the last 10. Faceoffs lost that had been won all game, passes up the gut of the offense, ....stuff should and can be addressed.

It seems to be happening over and over maybe it is addressed, but not fixed? 33% of the games this year they have coughed up a third period lead that has resulted in a loss or a tie that's not good. This is nothing new heck two years ago it happened at home against UNH up 4-2 in the third and give up 3 goals in a 4 minute span to lose 5-4. This has been going on for the last decade even though the players change and the assistant coaches have changed there is one constant through it all.

So, whats the answer?

Drink heavily before the games?:D

Though that certainly numbs the pain, I dont think it gets much done.:) Better conditioning? Coach replacement? Better talent? Jackie-like ref antics? Cheating? Bringing Grant back by any means? All the above?

A win is a win but it didn't look so good during the 1st. Maine played as bad a 1st period as they could possibly play. Sully kept them in it and I don't know what Tim said between periods but it worked. Much better effort in the 2nd and 3rd. O'Connor and Pryor played good games, as did Swavely. Gus came out late for warmups and I'll assume Corkum was going to be his replacement if he couldn't go, Gus played but its pretty obvious something is amiss. Love watching Joey Diamond play, I don't believe he is 100% either but he loves to agitate. The first penalty when he hit Dainton was a joke, Dianton moved right into Diamond and Bunyon couldn't wait to call it. The 2nd time Joey got his moneys worth.:D

Unbelievable. I'll admit I've been frustrated by the inability of Maine to recruit well enough or develope players, creating the miserable lack of depth and defensive and goaltending issues. However, can't we just be happy for a moment that we beat a team that was coming into the game playing pretty well, by a margin of three?

Huh? Did you like the way they played the 1st?

No. I didn't. I just guess I go through life trying to look at the positives. Tim made some adjustments, the team came out more ready to play and got the job done.

The adjustments were benching Banwell and Anthoine. I believe he got the team's attention and except for the first period it payed off. Banwell made a fatal pass in the 3rd against UNH. Shemansky played very well tonight, also. He didn't get an assist but he was an integral part of the 4th goal when he made a great move with the puck bringing it into the zone. This Umass team was quick. It's going to be interesting playing them again in Amherst on olympic sized ice.

Good 2nd and 3rd periods tonight.

I think this would create a scoring boost. Just a thought. I think Dee is the #1 center on the team. House is a good two-way player but Dee has the scoring touch.

1st line : Abbott - Dee - Nyquist
2nd line: Flynn - House - Diamond

and mix up the PP.
Gus doing nothing along the half boards for 80-90 seconds on each PP has led to NOTHING for far too long.
Every coach in the country knows how to counter it while he has no jump. now change.
