Actually we should expand this now. To a political realm. I bet Fishman has no ideology to go forth. But I bet we suck. Not on account we don't have talent. Lack of coaching. Big time. Terrible that he can't see this!

Huh..? Please ask your wife to hide your iPhone once she notices you getting into the liquor at night. I do appreciate that you love Maine hockey, but please.

My "ideology" would be to recruit enough talent to contend for a RS title and a PW berth once every 3 years or so. That would be a huge improvement over what Red has accomplished, hands-down.

You think that this team is loaded, and just in need of better coaching to excel..? Well, have yet another triple whiskey on me.

Maine is a .500 team with .500 talent. Scotty Bowman wouldn't do much more with this crew than Red has. The evidence is right in front of your eyes every weekend. Be honest. Maine can't consistently skate with the better teams, and we've all seen it, all year long, and for all the previous Red years.

God knows I want Maine to be relevant again. But don't confuse objectivity with negativity. If Red brings in some talent next year, I'll acknowledge that, and get excited. But until he does, you're howling at the moon.

He has players going to Cornell, Providence, Ohio State and drafted by QMJHL. He also has an outstanding goal tender from Finland with another year left. I am pleased for him.

Me, too. He certainly tried his best at Maine, but he's found his niche at Kimball.

I understand a 6-0 thrashing isn't what anyone wants to see, but this UMass team is one of the top teams in the country. They were playing on home ice on senior night and they had revenge on their mind from losing to Maine the last time they played. This game was a scheduled loss for Maine, in my opinion.

All we can do is wait to see how they bounce back at home against an opponent they can beat. That will tell us a lot heading into the playoffs.

FWIW, it's also possible that Saturday's game means very little. If BC loses at Providence Thursday and UNH loses at Northeastern Friday (both very possible), Maine will have nothing to lose or gain. They will be the sixth seed regardless. And if UML beats Vermont Friday (very likely), BU won't have anything to play for either. If all that happens, Maine will be making another trip to Providence.

Used to be Maine was one of the best teams in the country not the team that says “aw shucks its one of the best teams in the country how could we expect to compete!”

When that team thats kicking our heads in is an historic doormat I dont know how any one can call fans “negative.” Its the freaking scoreboard not us

Bottom line Maine Hockey as a Program has fallen down and under Gendron can't and won't get back up.....pretty evident in the record of Gendron the last 6 years.....what will year 7 bring..? More of the same..? Is it a combo of recruiting/coaching..? I say yes on the later. Negative...maybe, but then facts brings out the negative in a way no one likes...I don't, I wish this could have been a feel good story with Gendron taking over and year by year improving...but it has not.

Yeh, I'm with you. In my book its not really being "negative" we all want the team to do well, its more being on the vocally frustrated level. Being a middle of the pack team and trying to figure out how to squeak into the HE semis just isnt where we want to be, or should be.

.

I have to believe that a quality coach could take the level of talent on this team and begin to grow the program from it very quickly. There are quality kids playing (played and will be playing) for Maine. The status of what mediocre success this team has seen is not all on the talent level, some yes. A quality coach wouldn't likely take this team and become a ranked team in year one but there is plenty of potential for improvement.

Getting talent recruited to a program is one major element of what defines a coach success, the other obviously is then being able to take this talent manage it, support it, teach it and become competitive in the upper half of D1. In this respect something is just not working with the current coach staff and program, being middle of the pack.

Maine may not have the location (depending on what a player is looking for) or ultra modern facility that might attract some talent, but things are not in that bad of shape. There is a still plenty to build on; a strong fan base, the Alfond is still a great place to play in (even more so if winning is brought back), the training center is good, the education component is just fine and offers as much possibly for the students as they would like, and Orono/Bangor is a decent place. With this, in my mind, the coach staff now becomes the most critical piece for Maine in attracting talent and molding the talent into a team that is as successful as the fans want! (being more competitive in the HE regular season, going to the Garden, being in the hunt for the NCAA) We all want change and feel it is needed at the coach level and probably in the office too. The debate can rage on as to who or what qualities in a coach would work.

I don’t like picking on the kids or calling out any of them, they are student athletes that try hard and give it a lot, nothing but support from me. Being critical of the business end of the program is another matter, they knowingly put themselves in a position to be exposed and hold the tools for gaining success. Use them! Progress is all I ask for!

I disagree that he has found his niche. I can't speak for Tim, but I have a feeling that when conditions are right he will be returning to the college level. Right now I think he is having way more fun coaching his son and winning championships. Perhaps, ultimately, he will want to prove to himself that he can also be successful at the college level (D1,D2,D3).

I have thought about the results and how they effect Maine's playoff opponent, but I havent fully thought them through to its conclusion. What would have to happen for Maine to draw Lowell, who I think we would all agree is Maine's best hope of going to Boston?

Since Maine can’t catch BU, Maine and UML could meet as the 3/6 or 2/7 matchup. To have any chance of that series happening, UML has to beat UVM to get to 30 points because they lose tiebreakers to both PC and NE.

For the 3/6 matchup:

1) BC wins, UML wins, NE wins, Maine ties/wins
2) PC ties/wins, UML wins, NE loses, Maine loses/ties/wins

For the 2/7 matchup:
1) BC wins, UML wins, NE loses, Maine loses

Good post, thanks.

Running the numbers, I'm guessing that Maine will end-up at the Tsongas, but that's just speculation.

If they do, they have a shot at the Garden.

If the “favorites” win (PC win, UML win, NE win), NE would be the likely opponent for Maine. But that all changes Thursday if BC wins and really throws a curveball into the whole thing.

If that happens, the pressure is then on Maine to get at least a point Saturday. If Maine loses, assuming UML and NE take care of lesser opponents, Maine would drop to seventh and travel to NE for the 2/7 matchup.

Heck, it’s even possible that BU jumps all the way to the third seed. That would require a perfect storm of a BU win, UML loss and NE loss, but it is still in play. If all that happens and PC wins, Maine (6) plays at BU (3). If all that happenes and BC wins, Maine (7) would play at PC (2).

There are so many scenarios once you get into ties and tiebreakers it makes your head spin. The good news is we’ll know by Saturday morning who Maine will be plying based on a win or loss later that night.

From both a competition standpoint and my own selfish standpoint of preferring a trip to Providence/Lowell over having to go into Boston, I would rather see UML or PC.

Sounds like age discrimination.;) Gendron was approximately 55 or 56 when Maine hired him.
that has worked so well

Re: Maine 2018, 2019 Footba, I mean hockey thread.

Their is very little chance any D1 program is calling his name, maybe d3?
I don't think he will even think College Hockey anymore....he's in a comfort zone and doing well at it. Sometimes its not the money and glory a man looks for....he was in a can't win situation at Maine, yes he had a solid program and all the right people around him but he was never comfortable and was and always will be haunted in being the Coach that came in after Shawn Walsh [R.I.P.]...once he started to distant himself and the program began its down fall he was never going to regain the Maine faithful....

I'd take him back. He recruited far better than Red has.
