Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

UM Football has really proven what a strong team can do with their big win over Delaware, 31-17. No big mistakes and smart play can win games. They also have finished off games and gotten that dagger in such as with the picks in the fourth. Hopefully the hockey team can learn and try to follow suit.

Hey Diego I see we are bringing my quotes back. Not sure why? I carry no water, will post infrequently and am definitely no longer an apologist. Bloom is off the rose my friend.

Here are some pictures from today's practice at Alfond........lots of people attending the football game (Maine 31 #5 Delaware 17!!!) were checking things out.

Passable win for the Bears today. Nice to see forwards and PP working, MArty seems a bit ahead of Sully, and frosh class better than expected.

Now onto the real stuff

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Wasn't too impressed with Sully, fat rebounds left out front. In fairness their wasn't alot D being played. Ruut looked good. Flynn has one smooth release. Andersonns line looked good, the rook on the line scored a hard working goal. Can't tell much from this game except my new seats aren't as good as my old ones, not shocked by that.

Completely missed the game, was expecting a 7PM start time, and was watching the Pats while working on my bikes. Thanks USCHO.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Rutt and Antonelli looked the sharpest from the freshman class tonight. Rutt looked big and used his size and didn't shy away from physical play, which led to a couple penalties from him though. Antonelli also used his size well. At one point on the forecheck he stole the puck from the NB defenseman, used his strength to get around him and muscle a shot on net. It was an impressive sequence. Cerretani and Leen had their moments (Leen clanked on off the post in the 3rd), and Norman showed some solid speed but looked undersized (still snagged an assist).

O'Connor had a goal and looked very good on D, while Mangene struggled on the back-end and eventually got the boot. This experiment probably won't end well.

Flynn had a goal and 2 assists and also won 9/16 faceoffs tonight in case anyone wonders how he's adjusted to playing center.

As far as the goalies, Sully looked like the same inconsistent goalie as last year, while Ouellette looked polished and poised in his half of the game. Marty was quick to get down and showed excellent reflexes and the one goal he gave up was high-stick side under the crossbar. Tough save for any goalie since it was a great shot. Looked like he was doing a great job anticipating the play with bodies in front as well, which is a good improvement from last year.

Now lets see them put it together in a game that counts.

Diamond is the right type in front of the net...he's tough and he has the hands to knock in any deflections/rebounds...need a big season from him in the scoring department...and a few less penalty's...which may be hard to do with his reputation...some warrantied and some for sure not. Lets hope a year wiser on the part of #39 and the Officials from Hockey East.

I tend to agree w/ you because Diamond excels in gritty areas, but I truly believe the HE officials have it out for the guy. I fear that exagerated performances by opponents when #39 in on the offensive will result in a lot of PP nullifications...

Truly love the kid...I recognize his worth as that pesky grinder in front of the net with a heart of steel, and I don't want him to soften his game. When we're playing 5x5 and setups are a little less stationary and planned, you're darn right I want #39 crashing the front and giving defenses and goalies trouble... but when we're playing 5x4...let's get that puck moving and let the kids with shots (13, 10, I expect bigger things out of guys like 21, and even some of the new kids) shoot the thing!

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Here,'s a wacky idea. put Nemec down low on PP. Biggest body on the ice, would tie folks up, don't need to be great skater.....would with Dekastroza two years ago. Iknw nuts, but not worse than shenanski....

That is a wacky idea, bud, because I fear that at the end of the year, he'll incidentally block more of our blueline shots than he'll actually legitimately try to rebound. I like Marky, but out of 25 guys on the roster, I put him maybe 24th in hands... While it's true that you 'can't coach size' and big guys provide ample goalie screens and opportunities to push guys around... while Mark may finish the occasional check he has never proven to be the 'push a guy around' type...and I just don't think his mind is offensively wired enough to be a consistent, effective screener who can knock in some legit rebounds. I'd rather have the Anthoine type down low. He seems to love the physical play....he's got some unshowcased hands deep down....and you know he'll grind for inches and goals.

I thought the passing was pretty good for the first game. Maine carried the puck up the ice out of the defensive zone a number of times and didn't utilize a lot of dump and chase. I thought Ouellette looked a bit quicker than Sullivan. I was pleased with many of the freshmen. Cerretani looked like a good skater and handled the puck well.

his hands and Greg Moore's cannon of a slap shot.
Moore had a shot that (I know I know... it is blasphemy to say), that rivaled Rodrige's... IN PRACTICE
and Anthoine has hands that rival Levs/Purcell and dare I say.... PK??? IN PRACTICE

I remember seeing Teddy as a freshmen standing still in a faceoff circle at Merrimack, stick handling like a harlem globe trotter with 3 Merrimack players trying to get the puck from him for a few seconds... I had just arrived at the rink and the healthy Maine scratches were standing behind the glass doubled over in laughter at the show... I don't think Teddy moved his feet but the puck was all over that faceoff circle. (Bigos wouldda just steam rolled him)

In practice a couple times, I saw Anthoine doing the same to Maine team mates... granted only Diamond would croak him for that, but nobody could get the puck from him for a while

I have never seen those hands in a game, (and I NEVER saw Greg let one go in a game... absolute cannon!)

Team didn't look bad.

I've been more pumped reading tax laws then by the new intro video.

anything to tell us about the lobster fest?
who did you sit with?... or would that ruin the anonimitiy?

How did the Alfond look? How bad are the new nets?

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

It looks like Adam “The Ant” Shemansky is tired of sitting in the stands as he did in the second half of last year. He played well in the offensive zone but a bit lacking on D and got a couple of good goals. No question, Nemec was the best defensive player on the ice today.

I was out of town and didn't make it to the Lobsterfest this year.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

I think they looked gassed last time they played Maine so you are probably correct the big sheet hurt them. Playing 2 nights in a row isn't going to help either. The only thing I want to see today is Maine's goaltending
I also was looking to see how the netminders faired...I like the play of Ouellette alot, hopefully he's figured that being focused all the time is a must for Maine to be in the games,Sullivan was ok,but came away with #51 playing a better game...just the 1st game and only 30 minutes each...this weekends games will tell alot...rotation looks to be in the cards for them to start the season.

The Intro video might as well be called Flynns highlites. I can't believe they have nothing in that video form the Shawn era, what a joke. For those worried Joey is going to back off, forget about it, he leveled the goalie right before his goal, why it wasn't called off is beyond me, I figured once they reviewed it was going to called off but...

I miss my aisle seats. Brought my 3 year old, big pain in the butt to have to get by 8 other seats when he decides he needs to potty.
