Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Yes it would seem I put the whammy on Sox. They were leading and Rays were losing 7-0 when I turned off the lights. Guess the Sox and Yankees did the same! Well it's hockey season officially now in New England!
I like the sound of that...!

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

I read the article in the BDN about the team building rafting trip. I noticed the following sentence, "When you saw the rapids, your adrenaline started going,” said junior defenseman Matt Mangene, who had gone rafting earlier in the summer. “It was great. We had Class V rapids.”

I thought the Mangene on D experiment ended last season? I hope this is just an error on the part of the writer. He is a good hockey player, but I think much better as a forward. Can anyone provide clarification? Thanks.

Based on that article and another one I read in either BDN or PPH Manage will start the season defense. Leaves us woefully short of center icemen. Swavely, and Leidermark. What do they have for combined goals 2? Guessing Abbott will move to center and then a freshmen?

We only have 7 D this year so Mangen makes 8th, but where is he needed more? While he had hands of stone and was a reluctant passer at center, he did have 2 years in the position and can skate like the wind! Agree D may be his natural position, but man he needs to improve quite a bit from what we saw the end of his freshmen year in the Garden.

In case anyone is interested, UNB will be practicing sometime Friday morning at Alfond. They are staying in Orono Thursday night after playing an exhibition game against UQTR in Woodstock, NB, just across the border from Houlton (but you probably kniew that.) UNB won 3-2 tonight. The Varsity Reds play UNH on Saturday and then are back in Orono Sunday to play the Black Bears.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Not an error by the writer.....Tim definitely mentioned Mangene as an option on D at least twice on Tues.

Red Sox remind me of last year's Maine team. Chronic underachievers. If Francona goes...

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

I appreciate that Mangene has speed to burn, but D makes no sense......he is a liability in that space, the fact that this experiemnt continues is a puzzle to me....If he has hands of stone, even jumping up on the play won't help...put him at wing and let hoim stretch the opposing D...make them lose gap control....he can't skate the puck out of his own end too often, and we all know the first pass out is KEY....
I see it this way O'Neil and Cornell Offense and defence, gritty but smart; Haggarty and Nemec, experience, toughness and a shut down pair; O'Connor and Rutt or Pryor....O'Connor is developing, Rutt has Size and if Pryor can stay healty ( a big if) provides an additional O spark....Norman is a year away....

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Agreed. Will, Nemec, Cornell and Hegarty are an above average top 4. Let O'Connor grow, everybody say he's got the chops lets find out? I mean realistically Mangene's on your third pair if he plays D....and he's a top 6 forward right? So where's he needed more? I don't see the logic in it, but Tim did say it was an option "if needed."

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

The media day article in the BDN has Mangene on D as well. Anyone who was at the game at Merrimack last year saw that the kid is just not a defenseman. He is a good hockey player who's talents are not best served playing on defense.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

But really, has anyone here skated the ice?

I have skated on most ices in Hockey East, and the Alfond is certainly not bad or soft.
Lowell is like skating on a frozen jellopop in comparison to the Alfond ice. and there WAS sand in the ice at the Volpe, so it is impossible to keep an edge there. (the zamboni guys do not wash the sand off the tires before driving onto the ice.... leveling the playing field a little)

but I wanna throw in another observation... the ice conditions seemed to have "deteriorated" RIGHT after Grant left.

"We were ranked second last year and ranked eighth my freshman year," said Flynn, who will shift from left wing to center Maine's top line with Abbott and Joey Diamond. "The league is so close and there's so much parity. We can't make that call right now."

Looks like we have the answer to our center problem.

Yesterday Whitehead told me John Parker will be used at center...He also said hes a complete player

I agree that HE Final 2 years ago was tough. I thought that would have been enough for it not to happen again. But it did happen again last year at Merrimack. It was worse than the HE Final. I hate bringing it up because I think Mangene is talented. I just do not think the team will benefit as much from his talents if he is on D. I could be wrong, but I doubt Mangene is requesting to move back to D. If the decision had been made, so be it, I wish him well and I hope he is successful since I think he plays hard more consistently than some other players have over the last few years.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

To me this is a classic example of coaches falling "in love" with a player....all that speed, must do something with it. conversely, Tim doesn't seem to have the same love for Cornell , Pryor or O'Connor.....long season though and players have to stay healthy...who knws where theyend up...Ouellete or Sully will be a bigger issue need growth there

*FACEPALM*

That's ridiculous.

I always thought Conte ice was pretty nice. Not too soft, not too hard... the ice at Magness was also similar.

Umm, doesn't the part of the zamboni that puts down the water go over the ice after the tires? Sand? Woah.

Yes, pretty much everyone can see that except TIMMAY. But then again, TIMMAY thought Keenan Hopson would make a good defenseman.

He just misses his man-crush Bret Tyler so bad, he needs to create a new one in Tyler's image.

Skating on it never cuts the surface of the ice, wonder where the snow on the ice comes from?

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

Put Mangene with Andersson and Shemansky together and make them the never say die relentless forechecking line, being pesky and getting in the face of the other teams lines...I know they are all small, but having them use there energy and constant fore-check would bold well during parts fo the game.

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

So who does Timmy have on the #1 and #2 power play this year? I do not think we have anybody tall enough to screen the goalies...........
