#16 in the preseason USCHO poll. Wahoooooo!

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

#16??? Really? Uhhh, no.

I went into Alfond this evening, looks good. One thing that stands out is the fct that the building seems so much shaper and cleaner. The net was down on the north end and isn't as big of a deal as it's being made. The boards are not new. They were refurbished and reconfigured. There seems to be a lot more room in the concourse/walkway around the rink. Hopefully that will help with the congestion along with the fact that there's going to be no one at games this year. I took pictures and will post later...

Didn't take a left toward the south end when you came in, did ya? They have an aisle that protrudes into the walkway so the concourse is only 2 feet wide at that one point. I'll be shocked if no one gets hurt there before the end of the season

Actually that's where I went first and it's basically the same as before. Looks worse than before because of the ADA seats but it's probably 4-4 1/2 feet wide at those points.

For all the naysayer and nonbelievers....We are getting some respect in the polls. Thats because we have a....
Great coaching staff!
Great team!

Go Black Bears!

If dunbar says that it's the same then it's the same!!!

So let's look at the renovation scorecard........

Smaller capacity......check.
New BENCHES on the ends......check.
Ugly nets that obstruct viewing......check.
"New" boards that aren't really new.......check.
Ventilation system that obstructs views on upper side rows and press box and now needs to be have elbows installed.......check.
No newly renovated restrooms........check.

Yup, they sure got a big bang for their $4.85 million.......TImmay HAD to be in charge of this mess!

According Chris Dilks of Western College Hockey Maine will take part in the Ice Breaker tournament in 2012 which will be held in Kansas City, MO. Notre Dame, Nebraska-Omaha, and Army will also take part...

Here's the press release by College Hockey INC http://www.collegehockeyinc.com/view/ncaa/news/news_32735

Who was the contractor for the job?

!
In all seriousness:D, the space has to be big enough for a wheelchair so its bigger than 2 feet, but I doubt most people would feel like passing in different directions in that space. There's a railing that comes up from the aisle in that section, its not a good design no matter what Dunbar says, maybe he worked for the contractor or the designer;)

Agreed. The whole redesign of the lower bowl sucked. Though keep in mind that the area in which the aisle and railing cuts into is intended to be used for ADA space, not the walkway itself.

They obviously haven't been reading this thread.

oh come on... what good is 16th nationally, that is 2 or 3 spots out of the NCAA tournament once again.

can you tell me in all honesty 2 spots out of the tournament is acceptable to you?
15th nationally might as well be 55th... but at 55th, at least we would be paying $4 to get in and they would give the 12 fans and 20 parents that show up free pizza and soda.

you know, like at Bentley (the team that beat Whitehead when he was ranked where in the polls?)

Re: Maine 2011 Offseason #2: Wondering If We'll Outdraw Women's Hoops This Year

My understanding of these renovations is that its all about the ice. Whitehead needed new ice to be competitive for top-end talent. The story went, Maine would havesome prized recruit come in. He'd skate the ice, say it sucked, and go else-where. So, has anyone here skated the new ice yet? Does anyone know what the players think of it? If the netting sucks and the bench seating is lame and all the other things people are saying is true, can the ice alone make up for it?

AHAHAHHAHAH...another Timmay apologist. Might have something to do with wins being down since Howard left or the fact a remarkable streak of NCAA Tournament appearances is a distant memory.

This is one of the funnier posts I've seen.

First off, I'm guessing the players could really give a **** about the netting or the concourse. And any player whose decision is at all effected by the bench seating can take a hike anyway....you know, once his nails are done drying....

But yes, yes - it's definitely the ice quality that has been preventing Tim from putting forward competitive teams, and bringing in more competitive rosters....In other news Duomolin and Billett committed elsewhere because they didn't think Maine's locker stalls provided sufficient elbow room....

So fill me in...did the ice quality start taking a sudden turn for the worse, oh say, 5 years ago? It must be, because that straw never broke Jimmy, Greg or Lev's back. And prior to Tim's tenure, no skilled player in their right mind came in to Orono, what with our sub-perfect ice conditions. So I won't even go there.

In the last half decade, it must be because we've only had talentless, uncoachable schmucks like Gus, House, O'Neill, Abbott and Flynn that we aren't gettin 'er dun. What kind of coach could mold a successful equation when they're forced to work with garbage like that? Fortunately, this ice is apt to start bringing the future Gretzkys and Lemieux's to Orono. It's going to make all the difference. Our program shall return to greatness yet. All hail the power of modern coolers.

Related: Teddy Purcell and Andrew Sweetland would have played 4 years if it weren't for that gosh darn ice....
