So whatever happened to the “Fire Whitten” crew? Congratulations Lakers and good luck in the tournament!
Thanks Dave. For the most part, the "Fire Whitten" crew were either those who didn't want to see Jim Roque fired, or those whose first choice as a replacement for Roque wasn't Damon. They've gone pretty quite the past couple of years.
Couldn't stand Roque, and I was okay with an extension, but I still think 4 years off the bat was absurd. 2 Years, then renew? 100% in favor. But 4 years considering what he had done at that point seemed bad.
Of course it paid out, which is great, and even though we have a big senior class I think this sort of winning culture will carry the team in the meantime. Hopefully the exposure will also give us a shot at some 'bigger' recruits, but they've certainly found some diamonds in the rough.
But for now, hopefully they can keep pace is with UMass, which I think is the best possible outcome, considering most pundits had us playing a #1 seed. If we lose, we lose. We still get a banner hung in Abel Arena, an additional year added to the NCAA Banner. I just hope that, if we don't make it all the way, we go out swinging and make it a close game.
And hey, at least we go into the CCHA as winners.
Once the Lakers won the WCHA tourney, they weren't going to be a 4 but some of the pundits have East Coast bias trying to get teams like UConn and Providence in and minimizing the WCHA. I am excited about the draw because I think that East Coast bias carries over to the schools themselves. I'm not particularly impressed with Hockey East outside of BC, and I was surprised to hear the UMass coach on the selection show flat out admit he knew nothing about Lake State.
The Lakers have had two series with Merrimack recently, and you'd think UMass would pay attention to stuff like that when building film for a season about how to play fellow conference schools like Merrimack. I guess not, though, since UMass did manage to lose to Borek's 5-11-2 Merrimack this year.

UMass did finish 2nd to UMD in the last Frozen Four so they're obviously a good team.
I'll be honest, I haven't really paid much attention as to how the NCAA rankings work at the higher levels since, well, we haven't been there since I've been a Laker fan, so I was just listing what the pundits were saying is all.
I was a little surprised at how little was said about Lake State on the show, especially with Starman there...............and the attention given to UMass. I'm hoping that UMass just thinks of the Lakers as a team that beat Ferris and UAH and look past us to playing Wisconsin. The Badgers better not look past Bemidji, either.
The first week of the tourney is always three great days of hockey watching. We'll have to see if MSU and St. Cloud continue their tradition of one and done. I have seen NoDak on TV several times this season and I see them as the favorite. However, as we've seen in the roundball tournament, upsets abound.
That's fair. I have to remember this is a new experience for some, but it reminds me very much of the old CCHA not getting respect back in the day and it probably doesn't help because the banner carrier for the recent WCHA has been Minnesota State and they have struggled in the tournament. I feel like things have to be earned more for some schools and conferences than others, though.
I mean look at UMass, and yes Bill was right they were excellent two years ago, but was that enough to make it seem like they are some amazing program with their coach getting a ton of airtime on the selection show? UMass was always a pretty mediocre hockey school from what I saw. But then they have Hobey Winner Cale Makar during one great season two years ago, and now UMass is suddenly elevated to another status?
We'll see what happens with UMass in the tourney without Makar. It will be nice to know where the Lakers stand nationally on Friday.
UMass really turned things around when they hired Greg Carvel as coach 5 years ago. They've had very good teams the past 3 seasons. They were more than a one man team when Makar was there.
