Good place to stay. You can walk right next door to the Taffy Abel from there. When I was up in the Soo last weekend to catch the Lakers , I understood why there we so many empty seats . There were so many hockey games going on in town last weekend, that the attendance was being split at each game by other games. You could watch college hockey, high school hockey,AAA midget hockey, peewee hockey . We stayed at the Holiday Express,( and what a nice place it was,) and there were so many kids staying there for the weekend who were involved in the games , that everywhere you turned , you were bumping into hockey players of all ages. Plus there was college basketball Friday night and the casino had a big event in it's entertainment center that also was pulling people away from games. If you could not find something to do last weekend in the Soo, you were not looking .
After that great start, it is kind of a let down that the team finished below 500 for the first half of the season .
You have to remember Bemdiji is one of the top defensive teams in college hockey and they showed why. The #1 problem obviously is the power-play. Hopefully the coaching staff figures something out over the holiday break.
Let's hope the 2nd half ends like the first half started. January and February has a much more favorable schedule for the Lakers than November and December.
The start of the 2nd half presents a nice opportunity for the Lakers to rise in the conference standings. 4 games vs NMU to start the new year means a potential 12 conference points up for grabs. With the way NMU has been playing, 4 wins is basically a must for this Laker team. If they want to be in the hunt for home ice in the playoffs they need to start winning games against teams they should beat....and NMU is a prime candidate for a sweep. Follow that up with a home series against UA-H, who we swept earlier in the year, and those six games have the potential to really make or break the Lakers' season.
I cannot believe that the Soo no longer has a movie theater .
Quite a few people I know go to the movies in Cheboygan. Perhaps a new movie theater will open up in the Sault some time in the future.
The Meijers that is going in at that location was looking pretty complete on the outside when I was up there for the BG series. Not sure when it is supposed to open; maybe this Winter or early Spring? Heck, I can remember the old Soo and Temple Theaters downtown, many many moons ago.I cannot believe that the Soo no longer has a movie theater .
