LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

The Soo has been really declining unlike other U.P. cites like Escanaba and Marquette which have been growing.

Why has the Soo been on the decline. I know the mayor and always thought he was a good guy. I hung out with his cousins off and on growing up. I still cannot believe they got rid of the theaters.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I hate to say it, but I was more than happy to move from the Soo. I guess you could call getting a Meijers 'progress', but other than that the town has been going down hill for years. I look at Mackinac City, and heard something like that was planned for the Soo, but was shot down. So much area of the town wasted, including water front. I do miss my school, as I supported many of the Lakers sports, but just had to get out, someplace with better opportunities and more things to experience. Looking to the future, I couldn't see myself retiring there with nothing to do but hockey from October to March. No way I'd want to waste away in one of those casinos. Will always love and support my team, though.

just figured out my password again good to be back the Lakers have had a let down the past 1 1/2 months but should finish in the top 6 at least. For the new year they must sweep NMU all 4 games. Anything less would be a disappointment.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Another tremendous article about the Good Ship Laker by veteran sports writer Randy Russon.

http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/ncaa/lake-state-date/#more-16059

As the Lake Superior State Lakers are on a break from the ice until after Christmas, we peruse the Division 1, Western Collegiate Hockey Association team from the outside looking in.

TEAM STATS

The Lakers have a record of 5-8-1 within the WCHA, which has them tied for seventh place in the 10-team loop.

Overall, the Lakers have an 8-9-1 mark through 18 games.

As a low-scoring team that averaged less than two markers over 41 games last season, the Lakers have upped their per-game, goal-totals this season. Thus far this season, the Lakers have tallied 57 goals in 18 games and given up 54.

Under third-year head coach Damon Whitten, the Lakers have shown some improvement in the win-loss column this season.

A year ago, the Lakers finished with an overall record of 14-22-5 and ended up seventh in the WCHA standings with a 10-13-5 showing before losing in the first round of the playoffs.

SCORING LEADERS

Five players with considerable college eligibility remaining after this season top the Laker scoring chart.

Mitch Hults leads the Lakers with 6 goals, 15 assists, 21 points. Then it’s Gage Torrel at 8-7-15, Diego Cuglietta at 8-6-14, J.T. Henke at 5-9-14 and Owen Headrick at 2-12-14.

Headrick, a 1997 birth-year defenseman who hails from Garden River First Nation, is in his sophomore season as a Laker after being recruited from the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

WRIGHT WAY

Dependable junior defenseman Aidan Wright, who is from Wawa but who played much of his minor hockey in Sault Ste. Marie, is tops on the Laker plus-minus chart with a +12 showing in 18 games to date.

NET WORTH

Junior goalie Gordon Defiel has been a workhorse between the pipes for the Lakers and has factored in all but one decision through 18 games.

The standout puck-stopper has a record of 8-8-1 to go with a 2.49 goals against average and .915 save percentage.

HOME ICE

The Lakers have 8 home games to play in the 2017 portion of their schedule beginning with a match against the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Friday, January 6 at Taffy Abel Arena.

SCOUTING

As part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Lakers are not allowed to comment on players they may be scouting or those they may have commitments from but have yet to sign a National Letter of Intent form.

Six players of note from the aforementioned NOJHL are reportedly on the “watch list” of the Lakers and/or at least one other Division 1, NCAA program.

That list includes forwards Zach Senecal, Mark Tassone, Gage Stephney and Keegan Stevenson of the Soo Thunderbirds and goalie Myles Hektor and forward Anthony Bastianello from the Blind River Beavers.

From the Thunderbirds, Senecal has a 1998 birth date, Tassone and Stephney were both born in 1999 and Stevenson — a 2016 Ontario Hockey League draft pick of the Guelph Storm — has a 2000 birth date.

From the Beavers, Hektor was born in 1998 and Bastianello has a 2000 birth date.

FUTURE LAKER

1998 birth year forward Ashton Calder of the Michigan Soo, who has a future commitment to play for the Lakers, is in the midst of a good season with the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League.

In 29 games to date, the big power forward has 12 goals, 16 assists, 28 points.

Between the two NMU home and home series and the UAH series, I would like the Lakers to finish at least 5-1 for those three series.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

How disheartening to find the Lakers in eight place at the break . At one time they were 6-1 and now 8-9 and one. If they cannot get improvement out of the power play, the second half may be a huge struggle to win games.

The Sault This Week's veteran sportswriter, Randy Russon, gets the good ship Laker fans up to date on the season in this week's edition.

Man, a return to Laker Hockey this weekend. Feels like it's been forever and a day since our last game.

Yep. I'd like to see at least a road split.

I think Kris Bindulis is supposed to be ready to play again this weekend.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I can't wait to listen to the legendary Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford and his call of the good ship Lakers at Nebraska-Omaha on radio station YES FM.

Methinks a sweep is in order, man.

Pretty sure Bill mentioned that we are just going to be getting a feed from the UNO announcers on the last Laker Hockey Show.

Yeah, he's mentioned that a couple of times over the course of this season.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

However, the Laker Legion are hosting viewing parties for those in the Soo or the surrounding areas both tonight(8:07 start) & tomorrow (5:07 start) on campus at Library 203.

Free to everyone.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I am guessing Defiel will play tonight and Kossoff tomorrow. It will certainly be nice to have Bindulis back this weekend and hopefully he helps the power-play.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Looks like Bindulis is not in the lineup tonight. Wonder if he's not ready to play yet and not on the trip, or maybe will play tomorrow night.
