LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

When I was up in the Soo last weekend to catch the Lakers , I understood why there we so many empty seats . There were so many hockey games going on in town last weekend, that the attendance was being split at each game by other games. You could watch college hockey, high school hockey,AAA midget hockey, peewee hockey . We stayed at the Holiday Express,( and what a nice place it was,) and there were so many kids staying there for the weekend who were involved in the games , that everywhere you turned , you were bumping into hockey players of all ages. Plus there was college basketball Friday night and the casino had a big event in it's entertainment center that also was pulling people away from games. If you could not find something to do last weekend in the Soo, you were not looking .

Good place to stay. You can walk right next door to the Taffy Abel from there.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

An okay start to the weekend series. It would of been nice to win the shootout but a tie is better than a loss. If we can get at least two points tomorrow, it would make this weekend for the Lakers a success in my opinion. The power-play once again is killing this team right now.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

A tie is better than a lost and now this moronic first overtime, second overtime,a shootout . Hell, why don't they have a dart throwing contest if no one scores in the shootout . A win would be nice for sure. That would be a nice trip home, a win and a tie on the weekend. Just getting a splint on the road is good.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

You cannot win on 15 shots. Cannot score a power play goal and give up two goals on the power play and expect to win. Seems their play is getting worse as the season ends the first half . Let us hope over the holidays they can get themselves back to where they were winning more than losing .

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

You have to remember Bemdiji is one of the top defensive teams in college hockey and they showed why. The #1 problem obviously is the power-play. Hopefully the coaching staff figures something out over the holiday break.

Let's hope the 2nd half ends like the first half started. January and February has a much more favorable schedule for the Lakers than November and December.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

After that great start, it is kind of a let down that the team finished below 500 for the first half of the season .

Still showing improvement over last season at this time. Last season we were 6-10-4; this season we are 8-9-1.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

The way Crawford and the coaching staff talks about the talent levels and such, being under 500 seems a bit of a letdown .

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

The good ship Laker couldn't buy a goal over the weekend and really outplayed the Beavers over the weekend. There were some questionable calls according the the Voice of the Lakers Bill Crawford and Sports Information Guy Eddie Bishop, and the Lakers deserved a better fate. With the brutal travel schedule, and with so many players sick, it's no wonder they have been on the short end of a few games as of late, with such a young team.

Head Coach Damon Whitten has the Lake Superior State University Lakers on the right track and methinks with all the home games ahead, they are still contenders for top spot in the WCHA.

The attendance will grow, but what a lot of people don't understand is that on any given weekend night there are several other hockey teams, youth hockey tournaments, high school basketball games, high school hockey games, movies, casino's, weekend shift workers, deer hunters, and star gazers, they all that take away from the count at the Taffy Abel Arena, otherwise you would have 3000+.

It's going to be a great second half of the season for the good ship Laker, man.

Ringy Dingy!

The start of the 2nd half presents a nice opportunity for the Lakers to rise in the conference standings. 4 games vs NMU to start the new year means a potential 12 conference points up for grabs. With the way NMU has been playing, 4 wins is basically a must for this Laker team. If they want to be in the hunt for home ice in the playoffs they need to start winning games against teams they should beat....and NMU is a prime candidate for a sweep. Follow that up with a home series against UA-H, who we swept earlier in the year, and those six games have the potential to really make or break the Lakers' season.

February also has UAA (at home) and Alaka (in Fairbanks), both teams towards the bottom of the standings. We must take advantage of those games as well.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Quite a few people I know go to the movies in Cheboygan. Perhaps a new movie theater will open up in the Sault some time in the future.

I'm hoping that someone buys the Kmart lot once it's closed & turns it into a theater. Doesn't even need to be some big 8 screen deal, I think the Soo could get away with 3 or 4.

But to be fair, the theater over in Canada is 100x better than the one we had right in town, it's just a hassle to get over there.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I cannot believe that the Soo no longer has a movie theater .
The Meijers that is going in at that location was looking pretty complete on the outside when I was up there for the BG series. Not sure when it is supposed to open; maybe this Winter or early Spring? Heck, I can remember the old Soo and Temple Theaters downtown, many many moons ago.

I'm pretty sure it's early next year. February maybe?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I heard spring. My nephew is learning to be an electrician there. My mom worked at the old Soo theater back in the late 30s. I remember when the Temple theater burnt down . We use to go the the Sault Theater all the time back in the early 60s.
