LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Was there a Laker Hockey Show this week? I don't see a podcast posted. Was this the week there was no show or is it next week?

Yes there was a show this week. I heard part of it but not all. I'm hoping they put up a podcast so I can hear what I missed. I e-mailed YesFM asking them to post a podcast but so far no luck. No show next week.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Just in case anyone was wondering why there won't be a show next week, it's because the Antlers puts on a big to-do for Valentines day.

Should be a good weekend with some good causes:

Tonight's game features the White Ribbon Campaign against Domestic Violence with the annual White-Out. The first 1,000 fans will be given free shirts & are encouraged to wear them to show their support.

Saturday's game will feature a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish foundation of Michigan in the form of a game-show style "Chocolate Punch-a-Bunch". Tickets are $5, and everyone will be a winner.

So I encourage anyone who can to make it to Abel Arena this weekend, especially since it is the second to last home series we will have...at least in the regular season.

On another note, these are the teams we should be rooting for this weekend:

Bemidji (vs. UAH)
MTU (vs. Ferris)
NMU (vs. Alaska) (As long as we sweep).

Both Bemidji & Tech are ahead of us, and we can't catch them, whereas Huntsville is chasing us & we are tied with Ferris, where Ferris hold the tirebreaker (I think).

Alaska is 1 point ahead of us, with Northern being 4 points back. If we can't complete a sweep, I think hoping for a split would be best - it would still leave Alaska ahead of us, but keeps Northern trailing.

if anyone is interested, I will try to post who (I believe) we want to cheer for every week as we close out the season.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Another bad night of hockey . Getting to be just another season. Let us hope the players coming in next year can make a difference .

Players trying to be too cute especially during the end of the game. Lakers are in real danger of missing the WCHA playoffs.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Methinks NEXT year the Lakers will be really good under the watchful eye of head coach Damon Whitten. This is a young team and with so much talent coming in, he will mold this team back to a contender, you just have to give him more time, man.

Former standout of the good ship Laker, Owen Headrick is in action tonite as the Erie Otters look to win their 9th straight game since the smooth skating D-Man arrived.

Ringy Dingy!

Figures he was on the ice for the only goal Erie gave up and ended up -1 for the game.

Glad he is a smooth skater though.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

This team does seem to have some very good talent ,but they just don't seem to play very well together. I heard maybe the week off hurt them and their legs took a while to get going .Do you think Anchorage may have had tired legs after that long flight from Alaska and than had to play on the Lakers home ice. Five straight penalties was nonsense and no way in hell should you be piling up penalties like that this late in the season. Have you not learn anything by now? You are right LSSULaker ,they may be in real danger of missing the playoffs.

Wow, $5 at the door? That's crazy! From the looks of the stands last night, looks like you guys are having attendance issues. Just like UAA, Northern and some other schools.

The game show fundraiser tickets are $5.00, not the hockey game tickets. Last nights attendance was low because we were having a snowstorm and the road conditions were terrible.

Over 3,500 at the Essar Centre last night, where I was at man, driving on those same roads and in that same snowstorm. Methinks it has to do with the quality of play and a team that is winning.

But wait till next year for the good ship Laker, with all the high end recruits coming in, head coach Damon Whitten will most certainly have them contender. If not maybe the next year, or the year after.

Been there with the bad weather. We travel 50 miles to get to the games. Many a night we have been tempted to stay home and watch it on TV free, but we always go because we have season tickets and have already spent the money.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Crazy to think we can finish anywhere from 4th to dead last. I think we'll probably finish 6th-8th.

Hults and Henke were pretty quiet this weekend. We need them to score goals if we want to win some games these next two weekends.

Interesting that the Lakers rang the victory bell despite the game being an official tie. Hope they don't get jinxed by doing that. :P

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

This been quite the Rollercoaster of a season going from the impressively hot start to the many peaks and valleys since. I have gone from being quite confident that they would host a series to missing the playoffs all together a few times. My prediction now is that UAH along with LSSU will be the two teams to miss out on the playoffs.

I do think that progress has been made but with the Jekyll/Hyde play of this team it's just frustrating. I think the coaches need to take a step back and reevaluate everything from the coaching on down to every thing else. The team has been getting slaughtered in the face offs and are having shot on goal droughts that's so hard to understand.

Anchorage played with a firm sense of urgency and fire for most of the weekend and the Lakers just not enough and that's why the Lakers only got two of six points.

Correction I did not realize that Huntsville beat Bemidji last night so I'm thinking Anchorage will be on the outside with the Lakers. Sorry Geof.

UAH only has 2 games left, at BG, so they are still in a pretty precarious position as far as making the playoffs goes. They likely will need at least a split, maybe even more, at BG. If Anchorage doesn't get at least 2 or 3 points at Ferris next weekend they will also be in trouble. If we can get a split at Alaska next weekend, we'll be in pretty good shape for making the playoffs (as long as we don't get swept by Ferris in the regular season ending series). A lot will be clearer after next weekend on who needs to do what.

Offense has definitely improved this season. Defensive play hasn't been as strong as it needs to be. Gordie has been good in net but not quite as good as last season. I think part of the reason that shots on goal are down lately is that the coaches are trying to get the guys to focus a little more on defensive play to shore up that area; more work is still needed.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

This team just doesn't play well together . Five penalties in a row on Friday night had me asking myself has this team learned anything or been taught anything. Sad thing in all this, they really do have some very good players to be struggling like this.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

While the same list of questions remain unanswered about the good ship Laker season, the litany of excuses and wait till next year thoughts by the Laker "experts", and how they can only manage 2 points at home against a last place team, the Erie Otters are a perfect 10-0 since being joined by former LSSU Laker standout defenceman Owen Headrick.

What was sad about the weekend games was the fact Anchorage flew 3000 miles to get to the Sault. Crossed four time zones . Had to battle jet lag and on top of it all, sitting in last place and took four of six points from a team with home ice . Something is wrong with that picture .

I think pretty much every team traveling to Alaska, and the Alaska schools traveling to the lower 48, leave at least an extra day early to allow for and recover from the jet lag. I don't think it's much of an issue by game time. Plus the traveling team doesn't have to worry about attending class; they just do some recovery and practice. Anchorage has been playing pretty well the second half of the season. They took 3 out of 6 points at Tech a few weeks back and split with Mankato the week before coming to the Soo.

It could also be that, as of the 2010 census, SSM, MI had a population of 14,144. The area of SSM, ON had a population of 79,800 as of 2011.

Yes, the hounds are playing well & are winning, but that doesn't tell the whole story.
