LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I believe the Alaska school's situation is not in dire straights now.

I think there may be some questions for the long-term concerning the Alaska teams, but I think for the immediate future they will be fine.

But yeah, ASU really needs to figure something out now. Not sure what they will be able to do now that they aren't working with the Yotes, as I don't know how much of a budget they've given to the hockey program in general.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

They'd probably have to win at least 5 of their last 6 games.

The big problem is that they're in competition with Ferris State. The good thing is that they have two games left against each other. This season is going to be interesting down to the finish...

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

They need to stop losing the third periods. If they can play 60 minutes of hockey, they could win the last six games . In the power rankings, the WCHA finds five of its teams in the bottom ten of college hockey ratings .

Not one team from the WCHA in the top 20 this week. The Atlantic Conference even has one at number 20 .

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

In 8 games with the Erie Otters, smooth skating defenceman and former LSSU Laker, Owen Headrick, has 2 goals and 2 assists in 8 games, and his team is 8-0 in that stretch and sits a top the Ontario Hockey League.

Methinks he made the right choice, now playing against far superior talent and teams than in the WCHA with the likes of Alabama Huntsville, Alaska Anchorage and the other 3 of the bottom 10 teams in college hockey.

Scouts have had an eye on Owen for a while, and now more and more people are seeing why, and it couldn't happen to a better kid or family, man.

Ive seen a lot of OHL games, Randy, and yes its a great league with exceptional talent. It is, however, a much younger league than the WCHA and college hockey in general. You are talking about teams that are on average just above 18 years of age. They would perform quite poorly against most, if not all WCHA teams simply because the college teams are much much older. The average age of age of teams like the Lakers and Ferris State are 21.5 years of age. The average age of the Otters and the Hounds are 18.2 No way young teams like that can compete against players three to fours years older than they are.
Glad Hedrick is doing well but I still say he made the wrong decision.

So would you place a large wager on Erie vs LSSU in a seven best of seven game series?

Methinks if the good ship Lakers play against the Under 18 American side in recent years is any indication, would be a fools bet to take them, against better and older players playing Major Junior Hockey in Ontario for one of the top teams, like Erie, man.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Playing for a pretty prestigious program as well. Looks like a solid pick up.

My guess is he'll probably play the next 2 seasons in Juniors and then come to the Lakers when Nick Kossoff graduates.

Do we know who is coming up next year to take Gordie's place?

I know we have both Kossoff and Lukenda, but from everything I've heard is that Lukenda isn't really ready.

Of undrafted free agents to play at least one game in the NHL this year, 72 were former NCAA players, 31 from the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL combined. If you are young enough and talented enough to get drafted, the Canadian leagues may well be the route for you to go for player development. But if you're 19 or 20 and not drafted, you'll develop much more as a player in college hockey. Older, undrafted players in Canada can score a million points against 16 and 17 year olds, but nobody's really paying much attention.

I wish the Headrick kid well, and everyone has to choose his own path, but his decision didn't do anything to tilt the odds in his favor.

Roman Bengert. He currently plays for Steinbach in the MJHL.
