LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

In 8 games with the Erie Otters, smooth skating defenceman and former LSSU Laker, Owen Headrick, has 2 goals and 2 assists in 8 games, and his team is 8-0 in that stretch and sits a top the Ontario Hockey League.

Methinks he made the right choice, now playing against far superior talent and teams than in the WCHA with the likes of Alabama Huntsville, Alaska Anchorage and the other 3 of the bottom 10 teams in college hockey.

Scouts have had an eye on Owen for a while, and now more and more people are seeing why, and it couldn't happen to a better kid or family, man.

Way easier playing against boys than it is playing against men *Me Thinks Man* Glad I woke up in a free country so I can voice my opinion.

No one on here seriously thinks LakerBaker is RR, do they? I certainly don't believe that.

With LakerBaker saying he sits in the press box for the games, I think that there is a good chance that he is Randy.

Soon after LakerBaker started the copying and pasting routine, LakerBaker also started adopting the writing mannerisms of Randy, but no way do I think LakerBaker is Randy. You're evidently assuming LakerBaker is telling the truth about the pressbox, and that LakerBaker is a "he" for that matter.

Another superb article by http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com and http://www.saultthisweek.com Randy Russon on the Erie Otters, and the addition of former LSSU Laker, Owen Headrick making they title contenders.

They have posted three straight 50-win, 100-point seasons, yet the Erie Otters may be the best example ever of a team that has been so good without winning an Ontario Hockey League championship.

And as the Otters pursue what has been an elusive OHL title, they are once again a top team. In fact, with 21 games to go in the 2016-2017 regular season, Erie currently sits atop the overall standings in a first-place tie with the London Knights.

The Otters have yet to win it all despite boasting powerhouse teams over the past three years with and without superstar centre Connor McDavid who, amazingly, could still be playing in the OHL for Erie as a 19-year old instead of starring in his second National Hockey League season with the Edmonton Oilers.

At any rate, having lost in the conference finals in 2013-2014, the league finals in 2014-2015 and the conference finals again in 2015-2016, Erie is once again headed towards a 100-point regular season in 2016-2017. With 71 points from a record of 34-10-3, the Otters still have 21 regular-season games remaining.

Can this be the season that Erie finally takes all that it has to an OHL championship and Memorial Cup berth?

Yes it could, though playing in the Western Conference, the Otters once again have serious competition from not only the reigning Memorial Cup champions from London but the Soo Greyhounds, Windsor Spitfires and Owen Sound Attack.

Still, it’s hard not to like this Kris Knoblauch-coached Erie team.

Just look at the Erie roster, which begins between the pipes with Sudbury Wolves castoff Troy Timpano, who is doing what he has been asked to do — mind the net and give the Otters a chance to win every game.

On the blue-line, Erie recently added to the presence of high-scoring, overage sensation Darren Raddysh by luring 19-year old puck whiz Owen Headrick away from the Lake Superior State Lakers of the Division 1, Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Headrick, by the way, has two goals in his first five OHL games with Erie.

Up front, the Otters are Erie-scary.

Not only does Erie boast league scoring leaders Alex DeBrincat and Taylor Raddysh but franchise scoring leader Dylan Strome is averaging more than two points per outing in the 14 games since he returned from the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes.

And if that isn’t enough, Otters general manager Dave Brown traded for Team Canada forward Anthony Cirelli from the Oshawa Generals and overage forward Warren Foegele from the Kingston Frontenacs at the January 10 trade deadline.

Whew.

But as we gush about the Otters we can’t count out London or the Soo or Windsor or even Owen Sound.

Actually, the Spitfires have free admission into this year’s Memorial Cup tournament as host entry but still represent a tough, formidable playoff opponent for any team in the Western Conference.

But as Windsor gets its free ride, it looms as a wild ride come playoff time with Erie, London, the Soo and Owen Sound fighting for the driver’s seat.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

That some good pedigree.

His stats don't look too bad either. Hopefully he'll transition to D1 smoothly.
Currently tied for team scoring lead. Good stats on a good team. He'll likely play in either the USHL or BCHL next season.

I'm hoping for the USHL. Nothing wrong with the BCHL, but from what I've heard the BCHL is more offence orientated, whereas the USHL seems to be a little more well-rounded (I don't know how true that is, just what I've heard from a player's father).

Either way, hopefully he keeps developing so he can be a force in the WCHA when he gets here.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Methinks if the good ship Lakers play against the Under 18 American side in recent years is any indication, would be a fools bet to take them, against better and older players playing Major Junior Hockey in Ontario for one of the top teams, like Erie, man.

The U.S. U-18 team arguably possesses year in and year out one of the most talented amateur rosters on the continent (with the exception of the WJC teams but those are not permanent teams) and have on average 3/4 or their roster drafted into the NHL. No CHL or NCAA D-1 team has as many future draft picks as the NTDP yet the U-18s have a losing record against D-1 competition every single year. How is it possible that, in many cases, a vastly superior team in terms of talent loses to college teams? Age and age alone is the primary reason. It is the same reason that in a seven game series, even a below average team in the WCHA would beat either the Grey Hounds or the Erie Otters in a seven game series EVERY SINGLE TIME. The Hounds might sneak in one or two against the Lakers but over that seven game series the Lakers would prevail because they are older, more mature and stronger despite being less talented than the Hounds by a fairly significant margin. Now take this year's Hound's squad and have them play the same Laker squad three years from now, then sure they would blow the doors off the Lakers but in the here and now, they are simply to young and lack the maturity/strength to effectively compete against the Lakers.

Even UAH at their nadir held their own (but lost) to U-18.

Exactly, even what was once the worst program in all of college hockey gave an exceptionally talented team a competitive game. The age gap is simply to large for any Junior club to over-come.

Was there a Laker Hockey Show this week? I don't see a podcast posted. Was this the week there was no show or is it next week?
